Could you please write a stub about my hometown on HWC language here - just a few sentences based on http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 171 languages. If your village/town/city hasn't on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests) Pietras1988 TALK 20:34, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Speaking Pidgin, and writing Pidgin, is two different things. Everyone that speaks pidgin has their own way of writing. There are some words that are the same, but most words are not. I can write about 5 sentences on your hometown in Pidgin, but that does not mean that the next person would come along and say I am wrong and completely change it. Bottom line is this: Pidgin is more a spoken language than a written language. Kanaka maoli i puuwai 22:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Protection request

[edit]

Full protection is used to force a cool-off when there's an edit war between several parties, not just two. It doesn't make sense to lock almost every editor out of these articles because two users have a dispute. When there's only two, the edit warring is limited substantially by the three-revert rule. Therefore, it's best to solve the problems that way and not force other users to take a break from the article by protecting it. Heimstern Läufer 06:57, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aloha

[edit]

Aloha e! Thank you for your note. I'm happy to have your help in finding middle ground, and greatly appreciate your kind and gentle words.

Insofar as the disagreements I've been having lately with others on some of the Hawaii based articles, most of them seem to be based on context. On the one hand, you have people who believe that things like the Apology Resolution are factual accounts of history. Once you believe that, and have internalized that as a world-view, my challenges and edits seem irrational and rude.

On the other hand, you have people who have read not only the post-1970 "Hawaiian Renaissance" literature, which has led people to believe that the U.S. overthrew and imprisoned Liliuokalani, but have been curious enough to go back to the source materials from the time, and have been skeptical of layers of interpretation. Not to say that there aren't those who have a pro-sovereignty viewpoint who are very well read on the subject, but one can safely say that they maintain their POV by dismissing a large body of history as propaganda.

That being said, how do we proceed together? My challenge is that I want to go to a level of depth greater than perhaps others are willing to - for example, some may just want to cite PL103-150, and declare it as historical fact, when I want to illustrate very clearly that such interpretations do not represent the only POV or even the correct POV necessarily. I contradict many of the basic assumptions believed by other editors here, and by a host of pro-sovereignty sources. This kind of opposition definitely rubs people the wrong way, but I cannot be pono and remain silent.

On your user page, you say you support an independent nation of Hawaii, and do not approve of the 1893 Hawaiian Revolution. Imagine your answers to a few of these questions:

  • Did the 162 marines who landed from the U.S.S. Boston ever threaten the royalists?
  • Did all of the nations with diplomatic ties to the Kingdom of Hawaii recognize the new Provisional Government?
  • Was the population of the Kingdom of Hawaii majority native Hawaiian in 1893?
  • Did Kamehameha III negotiate a treaty of annexation with the United States, but failed to sign it before he died?
  • Was the Republic of Hawaii a legitimate nation from 1894-1898?
  • Did any land change hands due to the overthrow of Liliuokalani?
  • Did the native Hawaiian political parties who were anti-annexation support Statehood after annexation?
  • Was it illegal to speak the Hawaiian language during either the Kingdom, Republic, Territory or Statehood period?
  • Was the Hawaiian Flag taken down on the day of annexation, torn into shreds, and given to the people who helped overthrow the queen?

I don't ask these questions to challenge your support for an independent nation of Hawaii, but to help you realize that depending on what one believes those answers are, one may have a rationally differing opinion.

And so my arguments with the others often end up emotional - and my task is to try to bring the conversation around to verifiable citations, and NPOV language and presentation. I think together we can get over our disagreements (although there will always be new faces joining in who start things up again), and appreciate your help in maintaining tone and dealing with specific citations.

As a haole who has come to our islands recently, and integrated into the life, land and culture, I hope you can imagine that the people of the 1800s, from John Young who helped Kamehameha unify the islands, to the missionaries who arrived in 1820 and spread Christianity with the blessing of Ka'ahumanu, to all the other immigrants to the islands during that time, up to and including folk like Lorrin Thurston, Sanford Dole and William Richards Castle who helped unite us with the United States, all had the same mana in their hearts as you have in yours. Although it may seem unbelievable to you, even Liliuokalani saw hope for her people being a part of the United States, and proudly flew the American flag over her home in 1917 to honor native Hawaiian-American sailors who fell in the Great War. If, as per Wikipedia, we assumed good faith about all of the people involved in the Hawaiian Revolution of 1893, I think the story is much richer, more realistic, and a greater honor to the human spirits they characterized.

Portal

[edit]

You're thanking me? No, I should be thanking you. I've been putting off the portal for a long time. Next, we need to work on project departments, project newsletter, etc. If music is your passion, would you be interested in organizing an "Arts and Entertainment" department, or something similar? We need to start forming groups so we can improve the articles and collaborate with related projects. Let's talk about this some more. —Viriditas | Talk 04:43, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Let's setup some kind of discussion on the project page so we can involve everyone. BTW, good work on the portal. —Viriditas | Talk 04:18, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not an admin. —Viriditas | Talk 09:56, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dr Blaisdell

[edit]

He seems a worthy subject for an article, but if you would like the article to remain you must write it in the WP style, which includes:

  • listing college degrees with university and year -- and putting the university names in double brackets
  • listing important awards, important memberships and offices held --a list is more readable than paragraphs
  • listing books published as formal references style: Author, title, Publisher, year ISBN if possible.
  • listing some major published papers, say how many total. Do not just link to Google, list the most prestigious papers. State the importance the journals are. Say how many other papers cited them. Use PubMed, not Google or Google Scholar. --Pub Med covers this field better.
  • and, most important, giving some 3rd party sources. A website at a university etc. can be one, but it cannot be the only one. Book reviews are fine, or a newspaper stories. Print or web is OK, but not from a list or a blog. These is, very unfortunately, some prejudice against people from the academic world.
    • If you do not do this right away, the article will probably be deleted in a day or two--though not by me. I apologize for not having the time to help personally. DGG 20:08, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page Protection

[edit]

Aloha! First of all, you're doing a great job on Wikipedia! Been through your user page; you sound like an interesting guy. In answer to your question, if you believe a page needs page protection due to edit wars, just leave a note with the title of the article in question on my talk page and I will place a page protection lock on the article. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask! Thanks. Jers --Gerald Farinas 14:40, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New project sidebar needed

[edit]

Since you did a great job on the portal and evidently enjoy design, I would like to bring to your attention {{WPHawaii Sidebar}}. The project desperately needs a new sidebar that is easy on the eyes, informative, and easy to update. Let's discuss a design on the sidebar talk page when you have some free time. It might help if you also look around at the navigational sidebars that other projects are using. —Viriditas | Talk 08:23, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I just updated the new page listing, so we can see the bot results of Hawaii-related pages as they are created. —Viriditas | Talk 08:38, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay, I just got your note. I can probably help you with the portal. Listen, I forget to mention, if you need help with creating and adding content for each day of the year, I'm willing to chip in. Give me a specific task and I'll do it, like a month or a set of specific dates, whatever. —Viriditas | Talk 12:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I'll try and get to it later today. If I have any questions, I'll let you know. More later. —Viriditas | Talk 23:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I think I figured it out. I have to leave, but when I get back I'll try to make the changes so the colors work. —Viriditas | Talk 04:12, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You overlooked two fields in Portal:Hawaii/box-header. In order for your chosen colors to match and give the impression of file tabs, you had to change "border=#25185d" and "titlebackground=#25185d". No worries. I am concerned with copying the Navy's distinctive style, however. Do you know if other portals use the tab display? —Viriditas | Talk 10:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean. I fixed it last night. See the above message. —Viriditas | Talk 02:00, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mahalo nui!

[edit]

I hope all is well with you. Being admin is tough... Sr13 06:58, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I got the mop two weeks ago. The portal is excellent. Even has ʻolelo Hawaiʻi, ʻae? One last thing- you should sign with four tildes instead of three, so the section can be archived. Aloha! Sr13 07:07, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories, okina, etc...

[edit]

If you want to make your life easier, you can request permission to use WP:AWB for categorizing Hawaii-related articles and adding okina's automatically. Believe me, you'll love it. —Viriditas | Talk 10:04, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's very easy to setup and use. Even if you aren't registered, you should be able to download it right now and install it. Take a look, but you won't be able to run it without permission. Also, you may want to do some more work on WP:HAWAII to bring your mainspace contributions higher. If you have less than 500 mainspace edits, they probably won't approve you, and Portal work isn't part of mainspace. If you are looking for stuff to do (and want to increase your mainspace edit count) take a look at the articles in Category:Stub-Class Hawaii articles, Category:Start-Class Hawaii articles, and Category:B-Class Hawaii articles. The goal is to move those articles up a notch. Stub articles should be worked on to move them up to Start, Start articles should be improved to move them up to B, B articles should be moved up to Category:GA-Class Hawaii articles, until the goal of Category:FA-Class Hawaii articles is reached. Looking at current statistics, we have a lot of work to do, which is why we need to recruit more members. Anyway, make your way through those categories and you should be able to bring your mainspace edit count up so you will be approved for AWB. Category:Hawaii articles with comments will point you in the right direction. If that doesn't interest you, increase your mainspace edits by going through Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/New articles, improving them as you see fit. —Viriditas | Talk 00:38, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaiian Pidgin

Hawaiian Pidgin needs some help. User:Ptcamn just removed some unsourced content [1] and added a {{verify}} tag.[2] I will try and improve the article as time permits. —Viriditas | Talk 02:22, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AutoWikiBrowser

[edit]

Thank you for your recent application to use AutoWikiBrowser. Regrettably, I have declined your request as you do not have 500 mainspace edits. You are welcome to apply again at a later time. Feel free to contact me with any questions, alphachimp 03:53, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sistah?

[edit]

About AutoWikiBrowser; the user denied you because you don't have at least 500 mainspace edits. Although I would, without doubt, accept you, you may need to reach that minimum before applying again. Happy editing! Sr13 05:03, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Outreach

[edit]

I removed the new kokua section on the Portal. We're not supposed to use the Portal (or any part of Wikipedia outside of userspace and talk pages) to refer to itself (see WP:WIAFPo and WP:SELFREF). Use Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Outreach instead. Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Newsletters may be of some help. Let's work together on this. —Viriditas | Talk 03:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you think of something to add for the generic invite? —Viriditas | Talk 04:33, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I would like to work with you to produce the first newsletter. You can request help for the Portal there, and we can distribute it to all of our members. Unfortunately, we don't have enough active members, so we have to start to do some serious recruiting. —Viriditas | Talk 21:05, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaiian diacritics

[edit]

Don't know if you've seen this, but as a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii, you might want to comment on the current proposal in the Wikiproject Hawaii MOS [3]; User:Erudy has posted a "modest proposal" to completely eliminate all diacritics from Hawaiian articles, except for a citation at the beginning. Right now there are only 4 comments, evenly split. As far as I can tell all of those supporting it haven't contributed to Hawaiian articles, so it would be disturbing if they claimed victory when hardly anyone who is actually from or connected to Hawaiʻi has put in their voice. Fair use rationale for File:Dennispavao.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Dennispavao.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:16, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaii edit-a-thon!

[edit]

Hello. I'm interested in attempting to put together an edit-a-thon for Hawaiian cultural topics something during the Makahiki festival perhaps around the month of November. The hope is that our lackluster coverage of Hawaiian mythology could be improved with help from the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Pacific University, and the Honolulu public library. I am in the process of making initial contacts with these organizations as well as Wikimedia DC's GLAM project. If this sounds like something you might be interested in participating in, or perhaps helping to coordinate, could you please add your name to 2014 Makahiki Edit-a-thon?--v/r - TP 21:22, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for editors to help with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu

[edit]
On Oahu? Edit Wikipedia or Wikimedia sister projects? You are invited to help the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu this September.

Aloha!

Last summer I moved to the Seattle area after 14 years in Kailua on Oahu. I immediately fell in with the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group as it formed, joined its board and became its first president as well as the GLAM representative for Washington State.

Recently, Adriel Luis, Curator (Digital & Emerging Media) at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, contacted me about setting up an edit-a-thon like the previous Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon. In addition to discussing one for Seattle, he wrote:

As I was working two jobs while I lived on Oahu, I did not have the opportunity to meet your or any other Wikipedians at the time. Hence, the reason why I am contacting you now.

If you would like to help, please contact me through one of these methods:

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
