Can you tell what the text says on this badge? I am going to have a clearer version made if I can get that. Thank you! Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! Do you know of any way to render that into Burmese text? Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 05:41, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
(I apologize, I'm trying to build it from a graphic of the Burmese alphabet, and I am messing it up)
Thanks for the update! I'd been wondering what he was up to since the time I created the article. Good to hear he's doing good work. — Hex (❝?!❞) 03:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Using flags to represent people
[edit]Please note that the Wikipedia manual of style discourages using flags to decorate articles. Flags represent countries and not people, so using them to represent ethnic groups is very problematic. DHN (talk) 20:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Yangon Circular Railway
[edit]Hi Hybernator. Great work on the railways of Myanmar! Just a quick heads up that the circular railway in Yangon is Yangon Circular Railway, not railways in the plural. cf. [1]
- Thanks. I've gone back and forth between the two. I started the article with the singular but have found the plural used in other places. e.g. [2]. It might be better to name it Yangon Circular Railway Line (although technically, it is no longer circular nor a single rail-line as it has at least a branch line to Dagon university. I believe it has another one from Mingaladon towards the north but unconfirmed at the moment.) But I'm open to suggestion.Hybernator (talk) 03:30, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, google throws up 3 links for Yangon Circular Railways of which two are to this article, and 9 for Yangon Circular Railway of which one is to wikipedia and one is to another site where you've contributed the article! So, I guess, it's not clear at all. I have a copy of an Air Mandalay magazine article that calls it "Yangon Circular Railway". Generally, Railway is preferred for a single railway company regardless of the number of lines (thus, in India, it is Indian Railways for the holding company but Central Railway or Northern Railway for each individual railway company). By that logic, Yangon Circular Railway seems more appropriate. What do you think? --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 16:45, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. I'll change it back to the singular. Thanks.
- Great, thanks. It's good to see some meat in these articles! --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 21:35, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Do you have any pictures? I would love to go there and get some but I can't get a visa (something I wrote after my last visit). A good picture of the Thanlwin bridge would be especially nice. --Regent's Park (Boating Lake) 21:41, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Not at the moment. But I'll look into it. Thanks again for your help.Hybernator (talk) 16:48, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. I'll change it back to the singular. Thanks.

[edit]Why did you remove the refs for various direct quotes in the Tay Za article? Direct quotes should always be referenced. Please put them back unless there's a good reason.PiCo (talk) 05:06, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- Because the "msn" link no longer exists. Need to remove unverifiable dead links. Perhaps we should remove the entire quote by Sean Turnell.Hybernator (talk) 16:47, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- The Tay Za article looks good and will probably be useful for anyone seeking basic info. Perhaps we could have a series of similar articles on Burmese business figures? Ross Dunkley for starters.PiCo (talk) 07:15, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
License tagging for File:Glass-palace-cross-section.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Glass-palace-cross-section.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.
For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 19:06, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
Image permission problem with Image:Glass-palace-cross-section.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Glass-palace-cross-section.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Yangon
[edit]I reverted your deletion about Yangonites carrying stashes of cash. Well, stashes of cash doesn't mean buying power. In Yangon's (and Burma's) case, it simply means high inflation, not wealth. And people don't have access to credit or debit cards, so yes, even regular people have to carry lots of cash. Very annoying problem. If you ever visited Burma, you'd know.Hybernator (talk) 02:43, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
I can see now what you are trying to say but it was really written badly and misleadingly. "Stacks of cash" used in an encyclopedia looks very amateurish and it wa smisleading as if you were trying to claim everybody was reall rich and floating in money. Say something like, "Due to the problems of high inflation and the fact that many of the population do not have access to credit or debit cards, it is common to see citizens carrying a considerable amount of cash." A lot of that section reads as original research. You need to reference such claims.
Anyway is always good to see people from places like Burma on here, if you have any photographs or anything of places across Burma please upload them!!
P.S I've stubbed some of the main Yangon Circular railway stations, any chance you could expand them? Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:20, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Burmese monarchs family tree
[edit]I'm currently working on a family tree of Burmese monarchs, but I'm having some problems:
- First of all, I don't know how Mohnyinthado of Ava is related to Kalekyet Taungnyo of Ava; same thing with
- Minkhaung II and Thihathura of Ava
- Hkonmaing and Thohanbwa of Ava
- Sithu Kyaw Htin and Mobye Narapati of Ava
- Zein Pun and Saw Zein of Hanthawaddy
- Smim Sawhtut and Takayutpi of Hanthawaddy.
- Swasawke of Ava and the Three Shan Brothers/Bagan dynasty (In the list you say that Swaske is descended from both the Three Shan brothers and the Bagan dynasty, but you don't say in what way)
If you or no one knows how they are related, or if they aren't related, tell me and I'll put unknown relationship or not related on the family tree.
Second of all, you say Thohanbwa of Ava is the son of "Sawlun the Mohnyin conqueror." Is he somehow related to the kings of Ava?
Thanks for any replies! --Nathan M. Swan (talk) 02:56, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

This has little or no effect on your editing, and is intended mainly to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. - Please add the Burmese name for the war in Burmese script for the article, Thank you Sodacan (talk) 02:09, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- To call the events before 1569 a revolt is wrong, the Burmese sources states clearly that this is the case, but the truth is much more complicated. The Burmese sources states rather plainly that the Siamese King (without specify who it was) went into monkhood and was taken to Pegu, left the monastery and revolted against Bayinnaung. This is not entirely the case. In accordance with Siamese and Laotian sources after Siam was made a tributary in 1564 the status of Ayutthaya was lowered and that of Phitsanulok was raised. This jealously boiled into conflict when King Maha Chakkraphat and Prince Mahin decided to ally himself with Setthathirath of Vientiane (who had been in conflict with Bayinnaung). When King Maha Chakkraphat send one of his daughters to marry Setthathirath and become allies, Thammaracha had her kidnapped and sent to Pegu, this is when in accordance with Siamese history Maha Chakkarphat abdicated (in shame among other things). The new King Mahintharathirat, decided to wage war on Phitsanulok and found an opportunity to take it with the help of the Laotians when Thammaracha was in Pegu. Thammaracha appealed for help and Bayinnauang reinvaded with an army. This is possibly when Maha Chakkraphat returned from the monkhood at the request of his son.
So firstly to call the 1569 a 'revolt' is an understatement as this is clearly not the case, it was a case of civil war between two tributaries, in fact there is really no word to try and sum up the long story beforehand. Secondly there is no need to define a war in one word or phrase in the article of another war 20 years earlier, the intro is fine as it is. Please, really, if you want to contribute bring new sources and new information and not try and change and have issues with just the intro, it is rather petty and tiresome for someone else who really worked hard and who had read as extensively as he can to be belittled and treated in such uncivil manner. Sodacan (talk) 01:13, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Alright, I will drop my objection to your sentence in the intro. That issue settled, I would like you to understand that I have NO viewpoint. The history and facts are all good, I have no object to any of your viewpoints or facts (I have stated this several times). Look my only objections were Wikipedia and semantic ones, I initially did not agree with using 'revolt' because I thought that that was leaving out crucial information. And if all of these facts are not all summarized (or described accurately by one word), then they should be omitted altogether and addresses in its own article. That is all.
- Okay here's the other part, I have stated before in our previous discussion that if there is a third party source that mentions that the story involving Queen Suriyothai is not collaborated in Burmese sources (or even if she exists) and is mostly Siamese legend then please bring it over and lets put it in here, in fact lets put it in HER article as well. I have absolutely and resolutely no objection to that. The only hang-ups are that it must be a third party source. I agree with you, and would like to put down the fact that she is not in any Burmese sources but just because both of us hasn't found any mention of her in Burmese books does not give it enough credence and is considered original research, which is forbidden on Wikipedia. The article is important for both our histories, and I really hope that you start believing that I have no ulterior motives, lets put all of that other stuff aside and just improve it instead. You don’t have to threaten me with putting in sources, Please do it!
- I never felt like my viewpoints were challenged by you... mainly because I agreed with many of them. Its not the history its the words! Sodacan (talk) 21:56, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Sodacan has given you some cookies! Now enjoy them! |
- Please take the rant above lightheartedly, as it is originally intended. Sodacan (talk) 22:03, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- I hope you enjoy them, and I hope we are on the same page. Because I am planning to write about ALL the wars and I don't want to have to go through this song and dance every time. If there is inaccuracy correct me, but if I think I'm right I will argue with you and I will defend my position, but don't call foul and assume I have an agenda. If you have better facts put them in and not just in the intro, everywhere. And please next time we have a disagreement, please have a civil discourse, only facts and wiki policy should be involved- and no other. Sodacan (talk) 22:05, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- Dear Sodacan, I hope you do write about all the wars. I wish I had the time, and back in school like you. I'm not sure why you keep implying that I was uncivil to you. Point out where; my apologies if I did inadvertently. Here's some advice: Don't get too worked up just because someone disagrees with you. On Wiki, everyone is encouraged to point out factual errors and POV positions. You're encouraged to defend them. That makes a stronger article. As you keep saying "assume good faith", do the same with others. Do continue to contribute. Regards,Hybernator (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Townships
[edit]Hi. Thankyou for your work on townships of Mandalay and Yangon. If you can expand as many of the others across rural Myanmar this would be great. ANy idea if there is a population/area data available for each township? I'm currently adding infoboxes. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 13:17, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- No, thank you for helping out with Burmese topics. I have data on where each township is located in relation to other townships but nothing else. All population data in Myanmar are just estimates since no official census has been conducted since 1983. Even the population data from the UN for Yangon and Mandalay cities are just guessitmates. Btw, please use MST in the Infobox. Again, thanks for your help! Hybernator (talk) 18:08, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Well I wish I could spent more time working solely on the country but there is so little online. At least sources are becoming available for topics like bridges and dams though.... Yeah I can see this. I'll step carefully with them I think. Although I was shocked to see that in 2009 we did not even mention the Shan State conflict. Myanmar Radio and Television -- thank you
[edit]Hello! I wanted to thank you for your anti-vandalism efforts, in particular in regard to the Myanmar Radio and Television article. Just so you know, by the way, when an article (such as Myanmar Radio and Television) is moved as part of a vandalism attack, it's actually not a good idea to copy and paste the original text back into the article. Doing that both breaks the copyright attribution needed by Wikipedia (take a look at Wikipedia:Copyrights for the boring details, but if you remember to not do cut-and-paste move fixing, that's enough, and it also makes fixing the move a little bit harder -- but since the vandalism is continuing, I'm going to have to get and admin to whack some sense into the violators and move the articles back. Not you fault -- I did the same thing early on! Anyway, thanks for what you've done though! -- ArglebargleIV (talk) 12:03, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, I dropped a cry for help on the WP:BURMA project page, and I think I've got to take this to WP:ANI for an administrator or two to look at -- but putting that report together is going to take a little time. I'll start on it though. -- ArglebargleIV (talk) 12:20, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Nice work eh? Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:40, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
We promoted this article to GA, our first officially recognized Burma article on wikipedia believe. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:25, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Our first GA too. I'd be happy to help promote more articles, but I may not have the support of Nvvchar who was disappointed with the low traffic the articles get, I don't know. Right now I'm planning on a new article on U Bein Bridge. I'm not sure though I can find much on it. If so it will probably be a DYK next week. Sometime it would be nice to have a GA on Yangon or Mandalay.... Oh about the townships... I requested that somebody draw me a blank map long ago so I could make locator maps for each of them but the graphics workshop are highly inactive I'm afraid. Actually I was planning on resuming my work with adding infoboxes to the townships later. If there are any articles which you have sources for and would like to collaborate with me I'd be happy to. We could produce some DYKs and get some more articles on the main page. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:52, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'd noticed your excellent work on that. I wondered if you could help me. There is this new TV presenter in the UK who is obviously of Asian parentage but I've been trying to figure out from her looks exactly what country her parents/a parent is from. See this. Her name is Jameela Jamil which I'm 95% sure is a Pakistani name or possible Bangladesh. But from her looks there is something about her face which looks like she has some Burmese heritage or possibly Bangladeshi I don't know. She looks more Burmese to me than Pakistani. What do you think? If I was to guess I'd probably say Bangladeshi... From her looks it might be possible she has both Burmese and Pakistani ancestors. What do you think? Actually in thinking about it she might be of Malaysian heritage. South Asian names are very common in Malaysia aren't they? Yeah actually the more pictures I see of her the more I think she actually is Indian or Pakistani. I think though she might have some further eastern ancestry from somewhere by her skin tone as you say. Hey have a look at Melanie Sykes. Now I know that she has a Burmese grandfather.... You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:57, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Hybernator, Boing! said Zebedee, and Ged UK,
I’m really sorry for
- Spamming on Russian One’s blog
- Evading blocks
- Annoy Ged UK (that wasn’t really fair, because it’s not one of the policy)
- Saying “Hell”, as I thought it means “A lot” (Now I learned more English, and found out it’s a bad word)
- Telling lies
And thanks GEDUK for one month rangeblock. He calmed me down and make me
- Learned more English
- Think what to do after my block is ended
- Think of this message
- Improve my behavior
By the way, I think this block isn’t fair. As I don’t know how westerns do (I’m Thai). And it’s not included in the policy. And start from 1 hour or 1 day block is OK, but why start from a forever block (but later reduced to 1 month)?
But now I am not brave here anymore, as I got lots of non-fair blocks. I will have to think many times before I can do any action here.
- Hybernator, Boing! said Zebedee, please tell this to Ged UK.--180.180.98.238 (talk) 14:03, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of R Zarni, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.thisismyanmar.com/mb/index1.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. IPA for သမ္မတ
[edit]Hi Hybernator,
I was wondering why you changed the IPA for သမ္မတ in the Burma article to θàɴməda̰, where the "tha" has a nasalized final. I guess the spelling would imply that but most I've heard have never pronounced it as "θàɴ" as in "iron" (သံ). I'm pretty sure that the "tha" is pronounced as an open vowel--I've never heard it pronounced otherwise. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if the schwa (what I put) is the best approximate, either. What are your thoughts on this? Maybe everyone I know just pronounces it as an open vowel. --Hintha (talk) 06:31, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

- Hey, Chris, I can translate but my Burmese keyboard skills are awful. It'll take me a long time to type it up. Sorry. Spellings for royal titles
[edit]Hi Hybernator, could you help me expand the Burmese royal titles section, since you seem rather well-versed in this period in Burmese history? (and proofread my Burmese spellings as well?) I wasn't sure how to spell the "Anaukrapa" part of Maha Uparaza Anaukrapa Einshay Min because I've honestly never heard of the word before in Burmese. Perhaps it's rupa. Also, how would you spell "Putra" in "Shwe Kodawgyi Razaputra"? I spelt it as ပုတြ but that's a guess at best. It could just be that the transliterations from the source I used [4] are incorrect. Thanks! --Hintha(t) 19:19, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Roads in Burma
[edit]Quality of some of the town articles is definately improving... I've created and started Template:Roads in Burma. Eventually I may have all of the national roads started but its time consuming working out the coordinates! Is National Road 36 (Burma) the correct name or is State Highway 36 (Burma) more correct. Please let me know what the naming system is, I think I can tell the NH is National highway but the smaller roads I need to know the naming convention.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:07, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think it's National Highway. I'll see if I can find an official usage in English. We don't have a separate term for Highway in Burmese; we just call it Big Road. But most of the English translation definitely uses "Highway". Hybernator (talk) 16:43, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Any chance you can add the Burmese names inside the village articles?♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:35, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
Regions in Burma/Myanmar
[edit]Can you provide for us an English language source for the change Division --> Region in the Union of Myanmar administrative divisions? --Bejnar (talk) 20:37, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
- Just did a cursory search on Google: Here's one from Xinhua. [5] Hybernator (talk) 02:32, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, I was thinking of a source for the change, not mere usage. The "State Structure" portion of the English language version of the 2008 Constitution is a start. Something in English that talks about the 20 August 2010 edict and its implementation of the 2008 Constitution would be nice. --Bejnar (talk) 14:29, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
- I found one English language source that discusses the change "Myanmar re-designates areas under new constitution ahead of election" People's Daily Online 21 August 2010. --Bejnar (talk) 14:38, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Please note that you can't just go around automatically changing "Division" to "Region" in the category and template links. The categories and the templates have to actually be moved to the new titles first, or else you're just breaking the links and decategorizing the pages. You can nominate the relevant categories for renaming through the WP:CFR process — but you have to leave the category link on an article at the old name, even if it's now wrong, until the category has actually been physically renamed to the new title. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 21:07, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

However, there are controversies over the victories themselves. Because Emperor Qinglong disguised the losses as victories. During his reign, the Qing map included Burma as tributary state. I am trying to find sources according to Chinese. Thanks! Soewinhan (talk) 03:02, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. This source at http://missions.itu.int/~myanmar/Burma/bur_history.pdf have no details about Elite troops. I heard Maha Thiha Thura was killed because he planned to rebel against Botawphaya. Please help me add about this with your sources. Soewinhan (talk) 04:04, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Now you moved it to a date in Older nominations, where new nominations are no longer taken. I personally feel I would make an exception, but will wait for the opinion of more experienced reviewers.
