Hello. This map is going to be deleted because of lacking copyright information. Do you think there's any way to fix all these images that are uploaded by HKU students? Thanks. — Instantnood 16:23, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Images keep being deleted

Hello could you please remind your students to tag the images they uploaded with the appropriate copyright information? Four images have been deleted for the article on The Standard alone [1]. Thanks. — Instantnood 17:12, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Semi-Protection

Hey Fuzheado, I saw you just reverted vandalism on the article George W. Bush, and, not to sound too much like a TV announcer, but "Are you sick and tired of constant reversions? Do you wish there were a better way?...Well, there is! And it's called semi-protection!" In all seriousness, any thoughts/edits you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mysekurity 05:54, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

I like the idea of semi-protection, as it's clear the GWB page is 90% vandalism. I'd raise the threshold a bit more, like the old SPAT (Sock Puppet Avoidance Threshold) of old, of 25 or 50 edits. Fuzheado | Talk 05:59, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Well the point is that we have more than one level; there could be a 10, 25, 50, or 500 threshold, all which could be incorperated pretty easily. -Mysekurity 06:02, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

What basis was homosexuality semi-protected on? It gets vandalised, but no more than usual, and I don't really see a justification for the ugly header. Ambi 10:42, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

While I understand where you're coming from, that's really not what semi-protection is for. Semi-protection is meant for short-term vandalism sprees - not permanent use on an article. There was no particular vandalism spree at homosexuality - at the very least, nothing to justify the ugly header. If that is going to be plastered all over the top of our most heavily viewed articles, it's really not going to do wonders for our credibility. Ambi 11:12, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

When you semi-protect a page, please remember to list it at WP:PP. It's especially important at the moment as the policy and technology are new. Also remember that semi is not a solution to apply to an article that is simple high-profile; it needs to have a serious vandalism problem. Also remember that protected pages are still considered harmful and that semi should be a temporary measure just as full-protection is. Admins must work hard to not allow Wikipedia to creep towards a uniformly semi-protected state. -Splashtalk 12:50, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

You seem to have semi'd quite a number of pages, without giving any reasons or noting the fact on talk pages. Semi-protection is not a "thank god, now anons can't edit anymore' option. Please don't overuse it. Ambi has unprotected Homosexuality and I've unprotected Evolution. Neither show then-current vandalism problems and so any level of protection at all is unnecessary. Evolution does show an IP address hitting the article yesterday, but then a block should be used. Protection is a last resort: and semi should be used no more often than full-protection as a rule. If you can block, block, if you can't and they won't go away, semi-protect for a little while. -Splashtalk 12:57, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

How long should an article be semi-protected?

I've raised this question here, as now it's actually real and happening I expect more people will want to comment. Dan100 (Talk) 15:11, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Careful with others' comments

Please don't add things before people's sigs. It makes it look like they made the comment. Please add your stats underneath the entry, with your own sig next to them. Thanks.

But I wonder why they are relevant. SP's purpose is to temporarily stand in the way of drive-by vandalism. It is not to walk around prohibitnig anonymous editing widely, and is not dependent on some history of vandalism. If an article needs protecting, it's because of a current vandalism problem, not an historic one. -Splashtalk 18:08, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Santa Claus

I clicked on recent changes and saw you reverted edits by 69.166.128.57...but his edits were not vandalism. All that he did was add links...please explain why you reverted.KI 22:45, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Semi-protection of my user page

I already listed it under Wikipedia:Protected_page#User_pages. I think it makes much more sense to sort pages based on their type (e.g. Article, Talk page, User page), rather than based on which kind of protection was applied to them. However, I specifically marked the entry for it on WP:PP, as well as that of many others I reduced from full- to semi-protection, as "semi-protected". The Wikipedia:Protected_page#Semi-protection section is specifically for real articles being semi-protected, not for Talk, User or other types of pages. Owen× 23:49, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Block

Well, the person I blocked had been adding unsubstantiated rumours to an article on a candidate in the Canadian federal election. While I didn't warn the individual my previous edit to the article made it clear this wasn't acceptable (particularly since that article was the subject of a news report in the Ottawa Citizen accusing Wikipedia of allowing gossip in its biographical articles of election candiates (see Free online encyclopedia fuels gossip on candidates Speculation, innuendo rampant on Wikipedia)

The reason I blocked the IP for a month was a) it was a dedicated IP that had done this over a period of time and b) the election will be done in a month. Homey 03:12, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I also see that after you unblocked the person they went on to do the same thing one more time to the Cheryl Gallant article. Homey 03:14, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Can you confirm that the change that was just made to the "tofu flower" photo you uploaded to the Tofu page is correct? Please take a look. Badagnani 16:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Hank Williams dips into the surreal

Thanks for your previous comment on my semi-protection of Hank Williams. The issue with the vandal has now taken a surreal turn--the guy posted on the article's talk page that he witnessed these events and that I'm part of the conspiracy to cover up the facts he keeps inserting into the article (he also made a comment that I'm a "very stupid hillbilly indeed" but I can't help but laugh at that). Anyway, could you please advise me what to do. This is no longer a clear-cut vandalism case but instead a case of no original research. Since the user can't be blocked b/c he keeps using sock puppets, how do you suggest dealing with this? I have no desire to keep reverting the page, which is what previous experience with this user suggests will happen when the page is unprotected. Best, --Alabamaboy 16:20, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Could you weigh in at the bottom of the Talk Page for Katelyn Faber regarding the inclusion of an image of her? Re:Meeting

Hi, Fuzheado. Umm...I don't know a lot about the meeting going on now, since I havn't joined last online meeting. We should find some university or company to support the meeting, therefore we think HK maybe a best place to held this meeting. They are still discussing about where to held the meeting and how to find university or company to support the meeting. :)--Simon Shek 15:36, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi! I'm Chungpui from Chinese Wiki. Now they plan to hold the Chinese Wikipedia Meeting on 26 and 27 August 2006. The location is still under election. Although Hong Kong gets alot of support, we don't have a solid plan on finance and veune, and seems that we lack core members who are mature (age18+) and willing to dedicate tehir time. At the same time Taipei have some core members and a possible support from Academia Sinica. So seems that now only Taipei has a realistic plan. I notice that you are from HKU. Do you think it's possible to get support from HKU (finance and veune) if HK hosts the meeting? If we can solve these 2 problems I think it will be very realistic to launch a HK meeting. The only thing is that 26-27 August will be in the orientation period of HKU and most facilities will be occupied by student societies.Chungpui 21:05, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I guess it's a firm date, as it was voted from the last meeting. But if we have a sound reason (say the veune only available in that that and that day blar blar blar) maybe we can alter the date a little bit. May I visit your office to have a brief talk on the meeting? I mean, if you don't mind. I'm not the "core" of the HK bidding committee as I'll leave HK very soon, but seems that they (or we) really need some advice in this stage.Chungpui 12:33, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

BTW I'm also a HKUian in fact I'm a firend of Alice. ;)Chungpui 12:35, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Someone has recently nominated your article Lawrence Brahm for deletion. If this Lawrence Brahm is the same person here [3] and who wrote several books about doing business in China [4], it is likely he meets the inclusion criteria at WP:BIO and therefore should not be deleted. Please visit and contribute to the discussion here. Also, please modify the article to show how this person meets WP:BIO criteria (and make sure it is verifable information from reliable sources. This will avoid future nominations for deletion. I would make the changes myself, but I'm not really sure this is the same person who is an author... and to be honest I have zero interest in writing about businessmen, journalists, and CEOs.--Isotope23 17:02, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Libya

Hi,

I've recently added Libya to the list of featured article candidates. Overall the candidature is going well with many of the objections now sorted out. The final concrete objection is with the article's prose. I have been the main contributor to the article and have been looking at it for the previous 9 - 10 months. My eyes no longer see it freshly, so I am not a suitable copy-editor!

To meet the final demand of copy editing, I have been advised to ask different people to edit parts of the article.

I would really love to get this article featured as you can probably see from the page's history! I've worked very hard on it and I see this as possibly being the final hurdle.

You can see the prose objections, mostly raised by Sandy, on the candidature page. If you have the time, please choose a section (Politics, Religion, Culture etc.) and copyedit, perfect, ace it! I would be very grateful with any help I can get.

Thanks a lot,

Need guidance about biased edits of California Air Resources Board

Fuzheado, I am asking for your guidance because you were the originator of California Air Resources Board (CARB) and because you have been a Wikipedian for very much longer than I have been.

I hope that you can advise me what to do about what are, in my opinion, some highly biased diatribes edited into the California Air Resources Board (CARB) article. The two edits involved were made today (October 6, 2006) by User:67.160.235.141 at 14:40 and 16:30 respectively. You should read them in that time order to see what he has done. I realize that there are people who disagree with CARB for many different reasons, but these two edits use some very biased, sarcastic and derogatory comments. What is the best way of handling this? Is there anything that you can do or will do? I will watch for your response here on your talk page. Thanks, - mbeychok 05:54, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: Britney Spears article protection

Thank you, I welcome your concern. This article, in my view, was correctly protected due to the repeated inclusion of potentially damaging data without proper justification for its inclusion—indeed, the lack of justification seemed instead to increase—that appeared to be intended to circumvent the discussion thereof. Rather than a matter of a "content dispute" in which I am involved, this is a matter of abject (if not intentional) failure to abide by policy. RadioKirk (u|t|c) 06:46, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

The creation of "notability" when news organizations accept tabloid "wire" stories is not in and of itself notability (did you actually read the links, I wonder?); the "effect" in the cause-and-effect equation remains missing. Nevertheless, I accept your decision. RadioKirk (u|t|c) 07:09, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

The Germans pronounce his name as if it were German (and that's how I'd pronounce it, German name == German pronounciation). The only people who'd be helped by your version are people who talk more or less like you and who care how it the name is supposed to sound. My suspicion is that most readers couldn't care less how John L. pronounces his name, any more than they'll care how to pronounce Łódź, Reims or Beaulieu. For those that really do care we have IPA. The set of people who care, and share your manner of speaking, is unlikely to be large. If you really feel that the IPA needs supplementing, why not add a recording ? Ok, just to clarify that. There's currently a semi-protection backlog over at WP:PP and CAT:SEMI (people have brought it up on ANI and such and asked people to help out). The reason I was unprotecting en masse was due to this backlog. In fact, I know of one other admin who unprotected more than the 30 I did that day. I will accept that unprotecting Anus was a bad idea and poor judgement on my part, but one other of those you highlighted on my talk page (Asshole), has had very little vandalism since unprotection. One gripe I do have is with your statement that I unprotected articles "without even looking at why they were protected in the first place". I actually skipped over numerous articles on CAT:SEMI because I didn't feel unprotection would be beneficial (in cases where it was protected to prevent sockpuppetry or banned users editing and the like). Poop deck was ultimately unprotected after consensus was reached on ANI. At any rate, if I have to be a fundamentalist of any kind I think I'd like to be a wiki fundamentalist over the other possibilities. :)
Summary: I made a few poorly thought out calls with Anus and Douche, but I think you may have mistaken backlog clearing for indiscriminate unprotection of dozens of articles. -- Steel 17:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm the "other admin". I was planning on letting your latest criticism of my unprotections go unremarked upon, but since I've been referred to on the podcast and here...

Like Steel, I found a notice on ANI that there was a backlog of unreviewed protections. It was not an indiscriminate unprotection as I evaluated both the reason given by the protecting admin, the amount of time that had passed, as well as looking at the talk to see if there is was relevant discussion. In cases where the protection was recent, where the protecting admin stated that it was in effect an IAR exception to the guideline against indefinite semiprotection, or where there was current discussion on issues relating the reason for the protection, I did not unprotect. In the case of Jimmy Wales, the protecting admin's edit summary ("recent vandalism") clearly assumed that it would eventually be unprotected. The article had been unprotected about half the time over the previous two months, so there is no "It's always been protected so it should stay protected" argument to be made.

As Steel notes, protection review is an inexact process. In response to concerns from other users, I carried out an review six days after my 84 unprotects to J through M. Of these, 11 had been reprotected and 14 had not been edited at all. You can argue that I should be able to know that the 11 (and several others that I've noted returned to protection since) shouldn't have been unprotected, but how do you know that the 14 (as well as the dozens that returned to editing normality) should have, unless you unprotect them and see? (I did try to be a bit more conservative with the marginal calls in subsequent review.) There are a number of issues tangled up with this, one of which is that some users seem to think that protection is an inviolate action that should not be questioned, while at the same time admins are clearly protecting pages and forgetting about them. If an admin states in their edit summary that a page deserves indefinite protection, and I disagree, I would certainly discuss it before unprotecting. If an admin thinks that an article should be indefinitely protected but instead writes "+sprotect, lots of vandalism" as the reason, he or she should not be surprised if other admins can't mindread and eventually remove the protection in accordance with policy.

I have no desire to drag this topic back into your fine podcast, where I think your repeated criticism of unprotection is beginning to verge on off-wiki lobbying. If you do think it is worth comment, I trust that you will represent my reasoning above fairly, rather than using it as a entry point to restate your own position. No response is necessary; I'm prepared to walk away from this one. Regards, BanyanTree 16:42, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

BanyanTree and Steel359, I see your side of the issue, and I don't mean for WikipediaWeekly to be a bully pulpit for my viewpoint. As we've mentioned many times, we seek out a multitude of voices and issues, so I heartily invite you both to come onto the podcast to either talk about protection specfically, or as part of the greater discussion on the long-term trajectory of Wikipedia with regards to quality, openness and the participation of anons. It's an issue that we have talked about in passing many times:
  • As Wikipedia (en: at least) moves forward, past 1.5 million articles and as articles reach more "finished" states, will protection only be used in the way it is used now, only as a last resort and a temporary measure?
  • Is semi-protection a state that should be used as an article matures?
  • What can we reasonably expect an anon to add to "poop deck" or "anus" that would be useful, as innovations in those particular subjects are not likely?
  • Or should protection stay the domain of emergency measures when we get real "stable versions" in place with a "publicly approved version" and a "draft version"?
It's a conversation we want to have on WW, and we welcome your participation.
It may either be by chance or because "birds of a feather flock together" but the podcast crew for the last few weeks don't seem to vary much on this issue. But that could well be that the panel seems to have a preponderance of RC patrollers, who would likely favor protection earlier and longer than the average admin.
The only thing needed is a Skype account to participate, and again, we welcome your views on this. Let me, Tawker or Daveydweeb know, thanks. -- Fuzheado | Talk 22:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
I definitely would... if I had Skype. -- Steel 00:21, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Fuzheado, I'm looking for a page on Wikipedia which describes a little bit about how instructors can use Wikipedia and incorporate Wiki editing into course materials. Do you know where this page is? Many thanks, --HappyCamper 12:15, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Semi-protection of talk page?

I find it's a very, very bad idea to semi-protect your talkpage. By being an administrator, you need to allow anonymous editors to talk to you for a variety of reasons.

  1. There are a few anonymous editors with thousands of edits who are as respectable as any Wikipedian with a username.
  2. If you warn an anonymous editor, they can't ask you for help.

Unless a troll is trying to vandalize (if so, put a message explaing the sprotect), I strongly urge you to unprotect this page. -- Chris is me (u/c/t) 02:29, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

"Context"

Hi, Fuzheado. Upon further reflection, I'm not as sure as I was earlier that there is any context that sufficiently justifies Essjay misrepresenting himself to the New Yorker reporter. Earlier, I thought that he had created the "professor" persona after being stalked by Daniel Brandt, but now it seems that is not the case. I'm not sure why he created the "professor" persona, but it was quite early in his Wikipedia activities (see here). Given that Brandt did subsequently stalk many prominent Wikipedians, it is understandable that Essjay would choose to maintain the professor persona, but it's not quite so understandable why he would then choose to speak to a reporter at length under false pretenses.

I also don't think that Essjay's current position of leaving any comment to Wikia's PR firm is particularly beneficial, to him or to Wikipedia's reputation. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 05:37, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Jalt, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Videos of Wikimania Taipeh 2007

Hi Fuzheado, when I remember correctly from Wikipedia Weekly, you said that you plan to make the Wikimania 2007 more interactive, so that Wikipedians who cannot participate can at least watch the conference on video. I do not know if you organize the videos, or if you know the person who will be responsible. There were some glitches at Wikimania Boston 2006, and perhaps it is possible to not repeat them.

  1. The videos should be taken in a free video format, at least as an alternative format. --> Ogg Theora. (Real media is not a good format)
  2. They should be freely licenced with a Wikimedia Commons compatible licence --> e. g. dual-licenced GFDL/CC-BY-SA 2.5 or later. Even though Commons at the moment limits filesize at about 20 MB, it is very likely that in the future also bigger files will be supported, and then we need these files for documentation.

I hope this can be arranged. Many wikipedians from Germany are very interested in the conferences and discussions, but will not be able to participate, because Taiwan is so far away. And you do a good job at Wikipedia Weekly ! I listen in regularly.

Do you have 'in blood' permission in respect of the music you are using for the podcast? ShakespeareFan00 14:53, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

A valid question, but there should be no problem. According to Apple:

Every podcast sound included with GarageBand is 100% royalty-free, so you can use what you want at will. Add them in during your post-production, or, if you prefer a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-podcast approach, you can even trigger effects during live recording.

Hi ShakespeareFan00, can you elaborate on the note you left on my page? Comments from NobutoraTakeda

I don't think that the deletion page needs to have you be condescending about me just registering my name. You do know that you are able to do just about anything on Wikipedia besides put forth deletions without a screen name, right? If you have a problem about me, why don't you ask me for information instead of saying things like that? NobutoraTakeda 01:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Doubts? That gives you the right to be rude and bite? NobutoraTakeda 01:34, 16 July 2007 (UTC) Factual? So I should say on your delete talk pages "this guy has 4 archives on his talk page" after your posts? Don't use an excuse to hide from an apology for your rudeness. NobutoraTakeda 02:04, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello! Nobutora, instead of focusing on practically only nominating articles for deletion, I strongly urge you to consider working to improve to Wikipedia by contributing to making articles better. Coincidence

Hi Fuzheado. I happened to read your piece, linked from the current signpost, after my punk attempt at 'article rescue' on Radio Monash, a top[1] universities online radio station. They happen to be part of academic courses in new journalism, which I assume would interest you. I have seen projects roused to rescuing articles with great effect, but a lot of stuff is beyond their scope and is trashed and added to a nominators 'score'. I hope this 'sport' is stopped. It is highly detrimental to the community and the work. Thanks for your opinion piece on the subject. Regards, Fred 11:08, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

This quick interaction I had reminded me of the thread a couple of weeks ago, your questions, and the upcoming wikimania discussion; how *do* we inculcate new(ish) editors? and into what do we guide them? I am very impressed by your work at Hong Kong University. Im hoping you are still active enough here to help a newbie instructor. I have a current project at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects#ITESM_Campus_Toluca_-_Advanced_B_English_Course_.28Profesional.29. As you probably know, it is a LOT easier to convince students of the value of using computer and Internet-based projects than it is teachers and administrators. While I have managed to get this semester's course based on Wikipedia and they have been pretty good about letting me experiment, they have let me know that they are "indulging" me. Ah politics! I also noticed that you got your Hong Kong project reported on CNN. How did you manage that? Something similar (not CNN so much but maybe a Mexico news outlet) would go a long way to helping my case as ITESM sure wouldnt mind positive publicity. Speedy deletion of Melissa Herndon

A tag has been placed on Melissa Herndon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. AfD nomination of Suzanne Fournier

Suzanne Fournier, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Suzanne Fournier satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Suzanne Fournier and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Suzanne Fournier during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. I found you as sysops(administrator) of Khmer Wikipedia. Now some users and anonymous users are trying to delete the text in the articles, templtates, user, user talk....We now can't do anythings to stop these actions because we are simple users, there are no Khmer sysops(Administrator) and only two administrators on Khmer wikipedia, You and User:Bookofjude. Space missions WikiProject

Hi, I noticed that you are a member of the Space missions WikiProject. A couple of weeks ago, I proposed that the Space missions and Space travellers projects, which both appear to be inactive be merged into the Human Spaceflight project. Whilst this is being done, the capitalisation of the Human spaceflight project's title would also be corrected (ie. Human SpaceflightHuman spaceflight). The projects are all doing the same/very similar things, and in my opinion, a single, larger, project would be more effective than three smaller, and somewhat inactive projects.. In light of very little response to messages on the project talk pages, I am now sending this message to all members of all three projects, inviting them to discuss the proposal on the Human Spaceflight project's talk page. I would appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks. --GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 21:46, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Template:Goings-on introduction requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Wikipedia Weekly 42

Size of Wikipedia

I disagree vehemently with some of the things you said in the recent WW episode. Specifically:

  • I think it is fairly obvious that the "sum of human knowledge" is finite. That is to say, even if you define it extremely broad - every idea in every person's head, every concept from all fields (both technical and non-technical), every creative work/story/fable/song/bit of lore - that you still end up with a large but finite number of things. An appropriate analogy here might be to all the grains of sand on the earth - there are lots and lots of them, seemingly (and metaphorically) infinite, but not literally infinite.
  • Wikipedia not nearly as big as you seem to think it is. Looking at the image here, Wikipedia is roughly the size of one shelf you might find in a library. That is nowhere near the sum of human knowledge - any half-decent library has many dozens of times that in both the fiction and non-fiction sections. Wikipedis is, in effect, the cliffs note version of human knowledge - a high-level, easily searchable summary of what's out there.
  • As for future trends in growth, you're right that we seem to be hitting the top of the S-curve (at least that is what Dragonly67's data seemed to indicate). This is not, as you implied, because we've got most of what's out there. I cannot stress this enough. We're hitting the top of the S-curve because we have effectively maxed out what a normal non-specialist contributor is capable of contributing; that Wikipedia has sufficiently good coverage of every-day topics that any average person who sits down to edit Wikipedia. At the risk of immodesty, I will use myself as a counter-example. I consider myself bright and well-versed in a number of fields. I've written many articles on Wikipedia over many years. Here are the articles I started prior to June 2004 (some because they were listed at Wikipedia:Requested articles, some because I wrote them of my own volition). While obviously this list represents, to some extent, the biases of my own education and propensity to write, some of these are so common-place that I'm still surprised that by 2004 they didn't already exist: Investigative journalism, Jacket, Hepatitis E, Social pressure, Socket, Special education, Special prosecutor. Now look at the ones I've created since November: with the possible exception of Van dyke beard, all of them are very niche articles, and most of them are highly specialized (and mostly technical) - not the sort that we can expect the average contributor to have ever heard of, let alone write about.

So as I said, I think we're hitting the top of the S-curve because we've maxed out what most of our contributors are able to contribute, not because we've maxed out what there is to write about. Raul654 (talk) 20:31, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia not journalism - latest podcast

Your comments about Wikipedia and journalism greatly concerned me. I can see why you would say that Wikipedia is journalism. It clearly bleeds into journalism as it reports on-going news events as they unfold, however I wasn't sure whether or not you thought it should be journalism. In my opinion, Wikipedia should unequivocally not be journalism. It is my understanding that journalists investigate and interview sources and then put together a story about that material. They have been trained (to some extent) to do this and have a code of ethics (again, to some extent). However, Wikipedia editors have no such training and are bound by no such ethical code. They have no journalistic qualifications. Why would we want them analyzing material and reporting on it? (By the way, I greatly enjoy the podcasts.) Awadewit (talk) 04:13, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

No problem. I saw that on your twitter feed and thought it wouldn't be too difficult. Then I had a hard time trying to write a blurb about that show in a way that wouldn't be offensive, patronizing, or otherwise controversial - which is why it is just a stub now. That is why I think there had been articles created for all of MTV's Sunday lineup except How's Your News? (although Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory was CSDed twice). Speedy deletion of John Carney (radio)

A tag has been placed on John Carney (radio), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Speedy deletion of John Carney (radio)

A tag has been placed on John Carney (radio) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

Proposed deletion of John Carney (radio)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article John Carney (radio), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

It has been previously deleted

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. causa sui× 08:30, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

I have nominated Redoxon, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Redoxon. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. causa sui× 00:09, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Fuzheado! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 3 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Roland Joffé - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Jeffrey Wigand - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  3. Peng-Peng Gong - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

AfD nomination of Edward Seitz

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Edward Seitz. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Edward Seitz. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:07, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Macau church.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Macau church.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File source problem with File:Martin-lee-campaign2004.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Martin-lee-campaign2004.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:33, 17 March 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. IngerAlHaosului (talk) 14:33, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Seven dirty words

Hello Fuzheado, this is a message from an automated bot to inform you that the page you created on July 31 2003, Seven dirty words, has been marked for speedy deletion by User:Sophie (page has mainspace links, and more than 49 edits). This has been done because the page provides no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent (see CSD). If you think the tag was placed in error, please add "{{hangon}}" to the page text, and edit the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. If you have a question about this bot, please ask it at User talk:SDPatrolBot II. If you have a question for the user who tagged the article, see User talk:Sophie. Your contributed article, Levitt Institute

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Levitt Institute. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Hungry Beast. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Hungry Beast - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Sroc (talk) 14:51, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

As part of an effort to determine how many active editors are present in the spaceflight-related WikiProjects, I have made some changes to the list of members of WikiProject Human spaceflight. If you still consider yourself to be an active editor in this project, I would be grateful if you would please edit the list so that your name is not struck out - thus a clearer idea of the critical mass of editors can be determined. Many thanks in advance!

The article Mary Ellen Callahan has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Killiondude (talk) 05:22, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Children's Museum update

Kit Cat Klock

It's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.

We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcome Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).

We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! LoriLee (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Fuzheado,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:29, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse

Hi! Welcome to the first edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

Spring has sprung! Stop by the Teahouse for a cup of tea under the cherry blossoms.
  • Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
  • A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Take a look at the new page today and start learning about the hosts tasks and how you can participate!

Hi. When you recently edited Angela Rockwood, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Clovis and The Fast and the Furious (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Chinese Wikipedia article

Hi, Andrew! I checked your University of Hong Kong page, and found your Chinese name there. I am a beginner at Mandarin Chinese, but I thought I would start a stub there. I started zh:酈安治 and made sure it had at least 50 zi. I also added your Chinese name to your English article; from my understanding the custom is that Chinese-Americans who have a "Chinese name" have their Chinese names stated in their articles.

Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 23:24, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

You are welcome! :) - I use http://mdbg.net to get Pinyin readings and to get definitions of words in Chinese. That helped me get the pinyin of your Chinese name. I'll see if I can add more information to the article. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:42, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Somebody on the Chinese Wikipedia started an AFD on that article. zh:Wikipedia:頁面存廢討論/記錄/2012/02/29#.E9.85.88.E5.AE.89.E6.B2.BB WhisperToMe (talk) 17:05, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
You are welcome :) - It's fine if you don't get involved. I just wanted to make sure you were informed WhisperToMe (talk) 17:16, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
As an FYI, your article on the Chinese Wikipedia survived AFD: zh:Wikipedia:頁面存廢討論/記錄/2012/02/29#.E9.85.88.E5.AE.89.E6.B2.BB - Once I indicated it was the start of a translation from the English article, and I moved extra English text in, the Wikipedians there voted to keep it. The Tea Leaf - Issue Two

Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
Springtime means fresh tea leaves...
  • First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
  • Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
  • Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
  • Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

The Tea Leaf - Issue Four

Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

  • What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
  • ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
  • Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
  • 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
  • Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

The article Leech resistance has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No demonstration of notability per the general notability guideline.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Roth affair

I read that you are studying the Roth affair and Wikipedia. An interesting aspect, when you put it all together, is it appears that the primary article Roth was referring to in the New Yorker was his own biography (although he then mentions there two other statements). However, it appeared at first that the primary article he was talking about was The Human Stain. On the other hand, apparently because of the identity of the username (Nabokov9 and the fact that there were also edits by an IP) that Secretlondon, "the administrator" thought the edit of interest was in Anatole Broyard. Communication is hard, no? Alanscottwalker (talk) 12:45, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

The article A Martínez has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Peridon (talk) 18:55, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Essjay's legacy

Although I was an active contributor in 2007, when the Essjay controversy became public, I didn't pay attention.

I spent a few hours looking into it, and came across an article you wrote Essjay's third transgression.

Do you know what Essjay did after his resignation? Your article left open a possibility that occurred to me as I read other articles -- that Essjay may have exercised his "right to disappear", and started over with a new persona. If his new persona was public knowledge, but not well publicized, am I correct it would not be an instance of WP:OUTING to discuss it?

What got me interested in looking up Essjay were some assertions being made in a commons image deletion discussion about two weeks ago. For several days someone supporting the uploader's request to delete his widely used image kept claiming the uploader was "a schoolboy". After several days the uploader asserted he was "young (U16)".

For several years it has been my position that real world claims like this should be discounted, unless they are are confirmed via OTRS.

Over the years I have participated in only a handful of {{afd}} that hinged around a real world claim. In just about all of them the real world claim was being reported at second, or third hand. Sometimes someone would write: "the real world subject of this article included this telling detail in a heart-rending email." Other times there would be nothing on the talk page, and nothing in the discussion, to indicate the real world subject had piped up -- but there were early comment where a wikipedian had written something like: "how would you feel if someone falsely claimed Xyz." In those case I thought later contributors had misinterpreted those statements as-if they came from the real-world person.

So I started suggesting that every time a discussion included a real-world assertion, that the real world assertion should not be taken at face value--unless correspondence with OTRS confirms the real world identity of the person making the real world assertion.

I am sorry to say that I have never seen OTRS used to support or refute the credibility of a real world claim, during a deletion discussion.

When the uploader followed his supporter's advice, and claimed to be a minor I requested we discount this claim unless it was confirmed via OTRS. While those weighing in found the online persona of the uploader sufficient to trust that the uploader was a minor, I thought the legacy of Essjay, of User:Qworty, and or less well-known frauds like the sockpuppetry of former administrators User:The undertow and User:Freestylefrappe, demonstrate how vulnerable we are to being fooled.

In about half the discussions where I made this discussion Mr Jimmy Wales or Cary Bastique weighed in, and said something like: "Well, I exchanged email with the individual making the real world claim, and I am confident they are who they say they are, and the real world claim is legitimate."

It has happened again. Rather than use OTRS to confirm that they are a minor, and then use the Commons regular procedures for requesting reconsideration of a deletion decision, the uploader contacted Mr Wales, who wrote that he was convinced the uploader was a minor.

In looking into the Essjay controversy I saw that Mr Wales's last word on Essjay was that he only learned that Essjay used made up credentials to get ahead hours before he asked for his resignation. I also saw commentators who suggested it was hard to believe Mr Wales was unaware of Essjay's subterfuge when he hired him, months earlier.

It seems to me that if we take Mr Wales's account at face value it shows a credulity that should make us be on guard of ever placing any weight on his assessment of anyone's real world bona fides.

As someone who wrote about Essjay, back then, do you know if anyone has written an update on what Ryan Jordan has done since 2007-03? Are you in a position to say if Mr Wales has modified his 2007-03-07 position?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 13:48, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Misleading video

I caught your latest YouTube video. You really should review Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive253#Comments requested before I implement consensus at WP:VisualEditor/Default State RFC and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 117#VisualEditor now opt-in only for all users on English Wikipedia. Your characterization of me as some kind of bad guy that unilaterally turned off a crowning achievement of the WMF both angered and amused me.

First, my act was far from unilateral, as the first link will show. I spent considerable time ensuring that I widespread support. I know, it was only from those nasty, evil "power users", but believe me: the intent was not to damage the experience of newbies. If VE actually worked, it would be a great tool. It doesn't, and giving newbies broken tools is far worse than giving them difficult tools. Giving them tools that randomly mutilate articles and relying on experienced users to follow after them, detect and correct the errors inserted in the articles and write bug reports because WMF released it so far prior to completion was simply irresponsibility on the part of the WMF. It showed callous disregard for all users, newbie and experienced alike.

Your repetition of James's falsehoods about me implementing something that overloaded WMF's servers disturbed me more. If you are going to put yourself in the position of "reporting news" about Wikipedia, you should at least take the time to get your facts straight. The errors that would have caused a server overload were caught during review and corrected. Catrope, the WMF designer that reviewed it, took note of that in the discussion (note the change from "is" to "was" about the typo here). The second link should show that most people familiar with the situation recognized that James wasn't telling the truth. As is usual, the WMF has never directly admitted that it was making false statements with regard to the patch, but that doesn't make their statements any more accurate.—Kww(talk) 06:03, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia LGBT

Hi Andrew, I just wanted to bring Wikimedia LGBT, a proposed user group and thematic organization that promotes the development of content on Wikimedia projects which is of interest to LGBT communities, to your attention. I am sure you are so busy with your current projects, but I hope you might be able to direct people to this group if they are interested in LGBT content in any way. Of course, you are also more than welcome to indicate your interest/support, if you wish. Hopefully we can get some LGBT-related GLAM projects up and running in the near future. At one time, it was speech and audio, before video.

Hi Fuzheado. Is it true that you are associated with promoting the use of video on Wikipedia? My own interest is related to making some of the material on Wikipedia accessible to the blind and dyslexic, mostly through the use of text-to-speech technology. It used to be in journalism, that you would first think about going to radio before thinking about going to video. Has the text-to-speech barrier already been addressed by wikipedia, or is there an advantage to going straight to video in your experience which you might have a reference for me to look up? The article Pochacco has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This mostly unreferenced article seems to fail WP:GNG (notability for fictional characters)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Crimea articles

Regarding your closing of the discussion: "Crimean peninsula" was originally a redirect to "Crimea". Prior to the discussion, the article "Crimea" contained info about both the autonomous republic and the peninsula. The discussion was about whether or not the "Crimea" article should be split into two articles: one for "Crimean peninsula" and one for "Autonomous Republic of Crimea". There seem to be a consensus for the split. I don't think "the consensus is to merge". Can you amend your closing statement? I understand how this situation can be confusing.--FutureTrillionaire (talk) 21:34, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. That isn't even a policy, yet the general trend is, for some years already, to state whether the person is English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh. This isn't quite the case for dependencies. Edit warring is still common. 116.48.155.127 (talk) 14:48, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

I am very surprised...

that an experienced and dedicated WP contributor would add a section to an article without noticing that the material was already present in another section in proper context with its significance. I plan not only removing the new section you added to Washington Redskins name controversy, but tagging Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation for deletion as a trivial part of this controversy. FriendlyFred (talk) 20:08, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

@FriendlyFred: Could you tell me where you spot the name of the foundation in the article before I added it? I searched before for the word "original" and only found refs, but no naming of "Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation" in the prose of the article. Only now that you've mentioned it do I see an oblique reference to it here Washington_Redskins_name_controversy#Efforts_to_show_Native_American_support_for_the_name, but not with the proper name. I'm happy to cooperate and collaborate, but you cannot really defend the article Washington Redskins name controversy as being complete or even satisfactory on this point, if it didn't mention the name of the foundation properly. So let's keep it friendly, FriendlyFred. :) Regards. -- Fuzheado | Talk 20:14, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the foundation is covered in the section you found. Since I have been editing this article for months, and the article on the larger issue Native American mascot controversy since Oct 2012, it was easy for me to see the creation of a "foundation" by the team owner as a news blip unworthy of being given its "proper" title after only a few days of existence. (I remain perplexed as to why this would be deemed worthy of a separate article.) -- FriendlyFred (talk) 20:36, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
@FriendlyFred: The debate on the separate article notwithstanding, what about the non-mention of the foundation name in the main article Washington Redskins name controversy? If it was a legitimate oversight, then no worries. We can work together on that to include it properly. But it certainly does merits mention. Not just mention, but consider the many editorials about this move by Snyder from prominent folks, from Olbermann, to WaPost, to LA Times, to philanthropy organizations. And if you haven't seen Stephen Colbert landed in some trouble when after he attempted to lampoon Snyder's efforts, he inadvertently triggered the #CancelColbert movement. We do need to let this play out more, but this is certainly a significant development in the timeline of this controversy. In fact, tomorrow is an edit-a-thon at the National Museum of the American Indian, where we're going to be talking about the intricacies of the Redskins controversy, and the perils of sampling the "Native American community" for what it's worth, Snyder-style. See: Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/NMAI_COMM535_2014. This development has legs. I'm in the process of consolidating what I wrote and the larger graph that's already there into something more coherent. I don't think it makes sense to stay under "Efforts to show Native American support for the name" anymore, since it's not "Native American support," but an olive branch by Snyder (albeit an awkward one that's getting lots of criticism). See you at the article. -- Fuzheado | Talk 20:49, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

I live in NoVA, so will see you at the NMAI tomorrow.FriendlyFred (talk) 00:15, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

And here we go again

Just an FYI: MONGO is back to personal attacks in edit summaries and edit warring behavior. Like the previous incident, I happened to disagree with his content, changed it appropriately, provided references at his talk page that showed he was incorrect, and the edit warring and personal attacks ensued. Apparently, the warning he got before along with his statements of remorse and "I should have known better" have left the building: [17]. The diffs to what happened at the article can be seen at the following: [18], [19], [20], [21], [22]. Obviously, I won't be taking this to AN/I like I did last time. I've started a discussion on this at the article talk page here: [23]. -- Winkelvi 02:11, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Fuzheado...this guy just removed a polite reminder left on his page by admin Bishonen and has previously removed warnings by other admins. In my 10 years of editing, he has exhibited some of the worst ownership issues I have ever seen on an article. He came to my talkpage to taunt me and even after I told him to stay away he persisted. He's gone around and accused others of meat puppetry and has turned the article and the talk page into a battleground. He claimed in one edit the text was "stolen" when the article was created....and I simply moved the text from the Oso, Washington article to the 2014 Oso mudslide article after consensus determined the mudslide deserved it's own article. This entire.matter is ridiculous. I be emailed the primary editor who just brought Rainbow trout up to Feature Article level....Perhaps he can explain this matter better than I.--MONGO 03:18, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

None of your points here address your choice to edit war and use personal attacks again. Which is very telling. It's also interesting you canvassed an editor to come and support your point of view at the article talk page. It's obvious you have supporters who will back you up when you need them to. I note from previous occasions when you've run into trouble with blocks they've helped you get out of trouble then, as well. Must be nice not to have to worry about things like repeated unproductive, blockable behavior because your friends are sure to bail you out. -- Winkelvi 11:41, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
All I did was wikilink to Rainbow trout....you tried to pipe that to Salmon...I can provide the diffs. It's been explained to you by the author that wrote the featured article on Rainbow trout that Steelhead are Rainbows, not Salmon. You present unscientific sources that hardly even support your claim and accuse the author of that article of original research. The article went through GAC, Peer Review and FAC and was heavily scrutinized. If there was edit warring it was by you to pipe Rainbow trout to Salmon!--MONGO 15:28, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Still dodging. What you did is choose once again to edit war with me and use the edit summary for personal attacks. After indicating at AN/I and your own talk page that this wouldn't happen again with me. You expressed remorse. You said you knew better. Because you did it again so easily, so quickly, and with no remorse at all and now with continued dodging, it is apparent the "I'm sorry" at AN/I was complete bullshit. You keep trying to wave red herrings, but the fact remains: you are a edit warrior who readily uses personal attacks, has been blocked for both previously, and uses canvassing to get support and others to back your bad behavior. Tens-of-thousands of edits, thousands of articles started, good content editor and you still edit war and use personal attacks? Your friends and the hierarchy at Wikipedia may think you valuable, but to me, your bad behavior says differently. -- Winkelvi 00:40, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

All I did was link to Rainbow trout...you then tried to pipe that to Salmon, then after multiple editors try to explain to you that the Steelhead is not a Salmon but is a Rainbow trout, you accuse them of original research, insult their integrity and create an absolutely acrimonious editing environment. You've now had run ins with multiple admins. It's been a ling time since I've met anyone as combative and argumentative as you are, even when faced with evidence of how wrong you are you refuse to work collaboratively, insisting your wrong version is in fact the right version. You edit warred against me demanding older references which stated the mudslide was a mile wide were more accurate than the newer references which said the slide was 4400 feet wide but a square mile in area...my version stood. You then edit warred with other editors about whether we should link to Fox news or other news sources that had newer details...you lost that argument as well. Then I simply added links to Rainbow trout...you incorrectly piped that to Salmon...which is ridiculous anyway since.you could have just linked to Salmon without the backward piping! Then after multiple editors trybtk explain to you that a Steelhead is a Rainbow trout and not a Salmon, you insult their integrity, tell them that they are engaged in original research and persist in creating an acrimonious editing environment. If you are wrong, as you have been every single time, I am going to fix your edit. If you edit war you will get reverted by multiple editors. Now I'm done working with you. Until you start to assume some good faith of other editors, I'm simply going to assume you are incapable of working collaboratively on this website.--MONGO 01:23, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
Still dodging. Yep, all you said at AN/I...it was all a lie. Very disappointing. -- Winkelvi 01:38, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
And now add this. Incredibly. More of the same insult theme from MONGO: [24]. -- Winkelvi 01:41, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.hare@wikimediadc.org.

See you there! – James Hare

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

If you have any questions or need any special accommodations, please let me know.

User:Fuzheado/Video_project

Just curious to find out why User:Fuzheado/Video_project was not set up as a "regular" wikiproject? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:13, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

@Ottawahitech: - Hi, I suppose since it was rather unique to have a WikiProject focus primarily on scarce multimedia. However, I'm not even sure what constitutes a "regular" WikiProject, but am happy to try out anything you can suggest or would like to see. -- Fuzheado | Talk 15:57, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. Since video augmentation of wikipedia is one of my interests, I was just surprised to see this topic discussed on a user page, and not where most editors would expect to find it. Ottawahitech (talk) 16:02, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: - Oh, it's not a userpage anymore. That's a redirect to a full page here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wiki_Makes_Video. And please do participate and add videos. Also there's a wikivideo-l list here: [26] -- Fuzheado | Talk 16:16, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Just wondering if you should mention it at wp:Council to make more editors aware of it. A bit of explanation of what the project is all about - for example will it be looking after wiki-articles on the topic? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:43, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

It appears that the project you created is not what I had in mind -- but I am sure it is valuable for others. What I would like to see is more access to existing mainstream videos from Wikipedia articles. For example this section refers to: ‘’’undercover exposé videos of questionable activities by staff’’ does not seem to have any links to a video — only mountains of text covering the incident. A video would save interested readers/viewers a lot of precious time, I think. Ottawahitech (talk) 14:26, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

@Ottawahitech: - Just curious -- what video would you like to have seen there for the IRS article? A link to a video on the Internet, on Youtube or somewhere else? As you have already seen Wikipedia frowns on embedding video into articles. I suppose a new form of video tag could work to do inline linking. -- Fuzheado | Talk 14:41, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
To tell the truth I never even thought about your question. I suppose we should only have videos from reliable sources used as references? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:09, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Fireplane for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Fireplane is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fireplane until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Zackmann08 (talk) 16:25, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Lee Kuan Yew

I simply do not see any doubt in the section you have attempted to erase. The first sentence is an uncited claim, and the others mere quotes from authoritative media organisations. I wanted to explain in my 'undoing of your deletion', but I kinda forgot so yeah, sorry.

Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Fuzheado,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:13, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I have attended your talk in wikimania 2014 and was inspired to upload videos to wikipedia. I have uploaded quite some videos since Last November, and would like your feedback on this work. thanks! Matanya (talk) 13:35, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

@Matanya: - Thanks for the note and this is great! I like the selection of sports articles, which really show off the benefits of video. Do you mind if I add this to the showcase on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wiki_Makes_Video/Examples? Also, it seems the thumbnail is broken on the video in Ball_badminton, and the transcode had some errors -- commons:File:Ball_Badminton.webm. However, I can play the video just fine. Weird. Looking forward to seeing more! -- Fuzheado | Talk 14:04, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
I am glad you liked it, i focused on articles that show movement like dances, sports and the like :) No problem adding the uploads to the example page. Regarding the video thumbnail, mediawiki doesn't support VP9 transcoding yet, see phabrictor for more details. Matanya (talk) 14:16, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Jade Helm 15

I liked your article and saw that it was taken over by people who are all about making some important stuff look like it's only for the "Fringe". So I think I fixed it by adding Jade Helm Military Exercise for info that isn't about the "conspiracy theory." I think separating them out like that will show how foolish the people are who are trying to bury it (psychologically). If you don't mind adding whatever non-CT stuff to it and even moving over some more of the CT article's content, that would be great. I think even a section in the main article called "Concerns" is a good place to link over to the CT article. Dscotese (talk) 01:07, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

@Dscotese: - Sigh, thanks for the note. If I had more time, I'd wade back into it, but I'm afraid it's beyond easy reconciliation at this point. I started out trying to make it clinically factual, even if the majority of it was related to conspiracy theories, hoping that once the exercises started, it would fill up with with more balanced info. Somewhere along the line, people felt that since the bulk of the info was conspiracy related it should be a conspiracy article, which is not what I intended at all. If you can help push it back towards the middle, that's great. I won't have any real time to do so for a while. Thanks. -- Fuzheado | Talk 18:44, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion to mobile users: Use mini keyboards?

Mr. Lih,

I read your recent article. I've tried using Wikipedia with a smartphone and I agree that it's painful! (I used the "full" site interface, but it's difficult typing large amounts of text using a touch screen).

I wonder if suggesting that Wikipedians buy miniature keyboards for their smartphones could help? If mobile Wikipedia suggested using these keyboards people may find it much easier to edit articles. That combined with any improvements in the interface may make a huge difference in contribution levels. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:02, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: - Hi, this is something that may help, but I'm not terribly hopeful for that replicating a full featured environment for substantial editing. For example, I use at least 4-5 tabs when editing Wikipedia -- original article, editing page, talk page, edit history to start. Then it might be some policy pages related to issues that I'm editing, or the WikiProject page. Trying to navigate all that without a drastic change in mobile interface seems impossible. There will be an elite that will find that editing on a mobile is tolerable or even productive. I'm not one of those folks, but I'd love to be proven wrong on this. Thanks for the note. -- 19:31, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
You're welcome! I wonder if also suggesting the usage of larger mobile devices with larger screens (iPads and other tablets) may allow people to more comfortably have more tabs open at one time. I know not everybody has a tablet but suggesting the use of a tablet may be an idea. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:08, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
I find Ipads an awkward and constraining editing device, smartphones are worse in that my first experience with them I hit the wrong tab and it took 15 minutes to repair the damage. My fingers are simply too big for smartphones. But these are transitional problems, this is far from the only site which works better if you have a keyboard. In five to ten years time: :::*if smartphones are still around people will be more experienced and adept with them
  • A substantial proportion of people will still want the capacity to do serious work on the internet - if that means netbooks and desk tops they will have them
  • Makers of mobile device will have continued to compete in innovation and new features with a big prize to whoever produces a device that can let people do serious work on a mobile
  • The WMF investment in supporting mobile may make our sites significantly more mobile friendly
  • We might have the improved voice recognition software that would make the keyboard redundant
  • We might have a sufficiently good brain machine interface that the problem is resolved.
  • improved voice recognition software that would make the keyboard redundant
Whichever combination of these resolves the problem, by 2050 the predictions that mobile will kill wikipedia will look as quaint as 1890 predictions about London's horse shit crisis looked by 1930. ϢereSpielChequers 16:13, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
@WhisperToMe: @WereSpielChequers: The future promise of voice recognition eventually solving things will always be in the future. It won't be a reality, because it simply doesn't scale with numbers or with the environment. You cannot use it with too many people in the same space, and you cannot use it in a noisy environment. Those are exactly the conditions where mobiles are the most useful -- on a subway/tube or on public transit. It will have a niche, but it will not be the savior. There may be something to save us from a swipe-left dominated future, but I'm afraid I'm not optimistic about it being in the near future. -- Fuzheado | Talk 18:44, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Mobiles aren't that great for lots of things that we use PCs for at home, and I suspect at work. Yes we may have lost some editors to mobile, but remember the overall trend is upwards, and I doubt we were ever that dependent on edits done on public transport. Lots of reasons not to be too concerned at the drop we were getting in raw edit count, not least that the more efficient we got at dealing with vandalism the more edits we lost. But if you do worry about raw edit count, the first 6 months of this year have all had more editors doing more than 100 edits that month than the same month a year earlier. Seeking your input

Greetings sir,

I'm seeking your input regarding the sources collected for the Parwez article here [27], in order to build consensus on the content before I edit the main page.

It looks like most of the sources are being accepted, just two questions remain:

  1. Can I insert the sourced comment that Parwez rejected "some" hadith to clarify (not remove) his "Quranist" title?
  2. How many primary sources can I use to suppliment the 3rd party sources on which there is consensus?

Your opinion will be highly appreciated. Thank you. Code16 ... Logic Bomb ! 11:30, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
