Aston Villa

Btw - I'd just like to say that it was a job well done getting the Aston Villa article promoted to featured article status. It's nice to see that there's someone else out there who's interested in promoting the greatness of Aston Villa to the world!

I felt I'd done everything I could with the article and it needed someone fresh to come along with less of an attachment to it, for example as I wrote the history section, I didn't have the heart to break it apart, although I knew it needed doing on the main page!

Keep up the good work!! Villafanuk 17:37 29 July 2007

The FLC for this article has certainly been interesting. Your addition of the flags to the captains list is in my opinion irrelavent given that i will most likely delete it once all the information in it has been integrated into the main list. It may be shameful for me to ask but was William McGregor a player before becoming a director? Also Archie Hunter is not in the Aston Villa Hall of Fame. [1]. A full discussion on the Captains list is being held on the WP:FOOTY talk page as well as on User:Circeus's talk page. Thanks Woodym555 22:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

With regard to how close? I don't know. All reviewers suggestions have been acted on, the list has changed immensely and looks finished to me. I think it is just a case of waiting for some more reviewers to come along and the existing reviewers to support it. As with FACs it is waiting for the closing admins. Woodym555 22:50, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, i agree, i think that it has to be our ultimate goal. I think if we improve all the articles in the Aston Villa template then we will have a good Featured Topic. I think the managers should be next but the history articles will take the most work, especially with referencing and keeping it free of WP:RECENT and WP:NPOV violations.
Our main priority has to be to clean up the history, Villa Park and statistics articles and then to move onto the outlying articles such as Bodymoor Heath etc. I think i might wait a week before another Featured content nomination though. I currently have 1 list, two articles and a featured topic on the go! Woodym555 23:09, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Why have you added in Ashley Young. I don't think he is a notable player. We need to keep in mind that old friend of ours WP:RECENT, in a couple of years time he will probably not be the record signing. He has only played 13 games for the club, hardly noteworthy! Also I find the Show preview button helpful before making new additions to the list, it stops the clogging up of the edit history. (just a suggestion). I think i might ask for more reviewers from the WP:FOOTY project to look at the list to help things along and to get more opinions. Thanks Woodym555 13:20, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I think you should bring up the name change on the Footy talk page or request a name change at WP:RM. I don't think there will be any objections! Woodym555 17:47, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I have changed my mind, change it, it is not controversial, not all players are listed there, only notable ones. I will change it when i can unless you want to. If you do remember to move the FLC as well and change all links to it. Thanks Woodym555 18:16, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Did you cut and paste the information across? Woodym555 19:33, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
You should never copy and paste as it loses all the page history. I have requested a move from an admin to force the move over the new page. It might be that we have to get the page histories moved. It gets complicated, but we'll see how the RM request goes. Woodym555 19:39, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Don't know if you've noticed but Oldelpasso makes a reasoned and sensible suggestion as to why it should be List of Aston Villa F.C Players. To avoid the kerfuffle of moving the FLC page, i think it should be moved back to List of Aston Villa F.C. players. The status quo, and consensus, of WP:FOOTY is with the original naming. Unless you object, i will put it up for renaming. (We can't do it now, needs and adminstrator) Woodym555 21:21, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

(copied what was left on my talk page.) Hi, I happened to be looking on this page as I'm currently working on Alex/Alec Leake, and realised that he doesn't appear on the List of Aston Villa F.C. players. Had a closer look and it appears that about half the players on that page with 100+ appearances (some, such as Chico Hamilton, with a lot more) don't appear on the list. I did wonder at the time it was up for FLC, because there seemed to be an awful lot fewer qualifying players than on my Birmingham City list (which may appear at some future date, if I live long enough to write enough stubs so it isn't embarrasingly red). Presumably your list is meant to be comprehensive - if so, I'd advise putting an incomplete list template at the top till someone's got time to sort it out. cheers, Struway2 | Talk 11:43, 24 August 2007 (UTC) Could you look through it, i don't want to add an incomplete list template. Given the number under 125 we might try raising the bar of notability. Just a suggestion. Woodym555 11:47, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm thinking about alphabetically from this site [2]. You take a-G, i'll take n-Z and we can do H-M when we can. I have already created a list for h-M in my sandbox. I think we should change it to 125. leave the existing players as they are but change the criteria to 125 now. Savo Milosevic is the only person affected by this but i think he is notable enough to warrant specail circumstances. Is that ok with you? Woodym555 17:01, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

I was just about to post here! You read my mind. Yes i think we have to stub them now. Something along the lines of Pat Saward (if enough information, usually you can find some)or like Arthur Dorrell if neccessary. As long as we provide links and some project banners on the talk page we should be good to go. If you don't want to put the infobox in put the |needs-infobox=yes in the BIO tag! You want to start from the bottom up and i'll do top down? Woodym555 16:54, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
It is going okay. I have created a rough template in my User:Woodym555/Aston Villa Sandbox as a rough outine for a page. Only the reference names need to be changed and the categories. I am going through all the articles on the list to make sure they have subheadings, categories and correct templates if needed! Big job!
Have you seen the managers FLC recently, Struway2 brings up a very valid point. I think we need to consider a way of removing cup games, or finding the League games. I will leave suggestions on the FLC tommorrow when i have finished looking through sources.
Yes, i think we should follow Man United's example and go for Seasons. References=[3] and the "summary season" of that page as well. Records needs a lot of referencing which i will do soon (i found a table with it all somewhere but cannot remember where!). It would be a first for a footy article as far as i can tell. Villa One-Club men

I think that is a good idea. I think it best if you come up with a full list in a sandbox , like i do here User:Woodym555/Sandboxes. I think we then decide if it is notable/large enough. I think it will probably be merged with the notable plyaers. It makes them inherently notable if they only played for AVFC. We could highlight the years section to show it. I think you should draw up the list then we will see how to proceed. Woodym555 10:32, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, i think those who are One Clu men should have a highlight in the Club career section. The key at the top should link to the One-club man article. On the main Aston Villa F.C. page i suggest we just leave a link to the one-club man article. I don't think we need another table on the Aston Villa page. We do seem to clog it up with Hall of Fames that are already listed on the subpage. Its only my opinion though! Woodym555 15:03, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I think any subpage would be deleted as a duplicate. The One-club man article is a sortable table so all Aston Villa players are shown when you click the button. (by the way i've added the ones from your table that weren't on the main list) Also if we add it to the List of Aston Villa F.C. players as well it won't stand up to a deletion debate. I think we should add a lead to the main Aston Villa F.C. page about notable players such as:
There have been many notable players in Aston Villa's history. These can be recorded in several forms. The Hall of Fames that Aston Villa players are listed in ar noted below. For all players with over 100 appearances for Aston Villa see List of Aston Villa F.C. players and for those players that only played for Aston Villa see One-club man. Woodym555 15:20, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I have added the paragraph above into the main Villa page, i have also changed the colour of the highlight to make it more accessible. see Wikipedia:Accessibility for more info. We have to take those who are colour blind into account as the numbers can just morph into the background colour if we are not careful! Woodym555 17:42, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

User:Jonaldinho2004

Hi, as you seem to be one of the main Villa experts here, you may wish to review the edits of user Jonaldinho2004, who has updated many of the Villa players' pages. He seems to be ignoring my messages on his Talk Page about how the Infoboxes work (i.e. that they are for League apps only and to always update the pcupdate parameter). I've fixed a few of these but don't have time to do them all at the moment, so I thought I'd let you know in case you can take a few on. Cheers. --Jameboy 00:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Aston Villa Managers

Yes, it did take a while didn't it, and quite a bit of effort! Yep onto managers now. I have been fiddling with the lead recently to meet the criteria. We do need an image thoug, of any manager to put there. I have looked through all the individual pages and cannot find a single picture of any manager. We should be able to get one of MON shouldn't we? As long as it is Free use we should be alright.
Onwards and Upwards we go. Woodym555 18:46, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
I have looked at it against the criteria and can't see any outstanding issues. It may be helpful to have some specific soccerbase links for each manager rather than a generic one at the bottom. I don't think this would be a point for oppose though given that many lists have passed using the same system. It would be helpful though! Woodym555 19:04, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
We need a photo before FLC, once that is sorted then by all means go for it. Otherwise it will be dead in the water! Woodym555 19:09, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Looks good. I think we need the references integrated. there is a special template for it: Template:Soccerbase (manager).
e.g. If you wanted Jimmy Hogans http://www.soccerbase.com/managers2.sd?managerid=726 you would put in {{soccerbase (manager)|726|Jimmy Hogan}}
You use the manager id first then the name. Simple really. I suggest putting it in the name section or creating a new column for refs. Then i will put it up for FLC! Sorry to be a pain. Woodym555 19:42, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I have added the references into a separate column, for easy access. What do you want me to do with the picture? I have tried thumb and upright paramters but it disrupts the table. I have reduced to 120px so as not to interfere with the table. It all depends though on your screen resolution. Well i will set about nominating it for FLC, unless any objections? Woodym555 20:20, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Right i have moved the article to List of Aston Villa F.C. managers, so change it in your watchlist if you want. I have created the FLC, found at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Aston Villa F.C. managers, if you want to watch that as well, do so. Now we wait and see! Woodym555 20:35, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Managers has been promoted, onto next project. Okay with seasons? Woodym555 21:43, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

This article is now a Featured List candidate. Please feel free to leave your comments at the candidacy page. - PeeJay 01:27, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Frank Barson

Hi, just got back from holiday and had a look through my books to see what I could find on Barson. Have stuck basically all I could find up - some of it might not be relevant or might need to be cut down a bit, but I thought it best you knew everything you had to work with. Have also given the article a light copy-edit. Cheers, HornetMike 12:48, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Bobby Thompson (footballer)

Hi, Noticed you accidentally spelt him with a "p" when you created the stub. Just to let you know I'm moving him to Bobby Thomson (footballer born 1937) (got to put the year in to distinguish from the England and Wolves defender, the Liverpool and Luton defender, and any more i don't know about). Will amend any links that need changing and then expand the article a bit. Cheers, Struway2 | Talk 12:35, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I would keep it in the sandbox until we have got most of the material in it. Then we can avoid having in construction tags and incomplete tags. I am currently looking up all of the top goalscorers. Are we having it for all competition, if so we need to make this clear in the lead. Great work so far. Woodym555 16:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good. A suggestion: if you could add the {{Underconstruction}} tag when you are editing the article, it means i won't edit conflict and we avoid having to reenter numbers. I will start searching out the correct article names for all these players. Woodym555 16:37, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Check Category:Aston Villa F.C. seasons for specific season articles then link them instead of the generic in English football ones. I think we can use the 1880s link as well. Woodym555 21:22, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
The table is looking good. With regards to links: when they are available we should link them. That is the basis for the Man United table as well. Can we use the name Man United as well? Manure is derogatory and will most likely affend people!!! I have reverted your edits to the Aston Villa F.C. article because you managed to duplicate the whole article! I think it is fixed now. We have to watch out for the squad number changing though! Thanks. Woodym555 12:12, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes i think it is ready to nominate now. I did the last one, it is your turn. :) Woodym555 12:31, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, oh well, it has happened quite a few times to me before, as well! Woodym555 18:38, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Kurt's sister

Yeah. I saw that site, but it looks more to be a fansite than a reliable site, so that's why I didn't use it. Nikki311 19:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Villa Park

I think we should do an article now. Villa Park is the next big one to do i think. City of Manchester Stadium is a featured article and i think we should use a similar structure. I have a book that has some history in it so i will expand that when i can. I think the stands sub-sections should be amalgamated into a Structure section discussing it in general. The other uses section also needs trimming. The sub-sections could be put into a single paragraph really. I am not sure whether listing every score of every FA cup match is neccessary. Then it needs to be referenced. Woodym555 11:33, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Not yet. Good article is not a peer review. I think we have to get it up to scratch before we go there. I think a few more wikilinks could be added. It needs a lot of referencing first. I will dig out the book tonight and reference it. I still think that the FA Cup list should go. I will ask at WP:FOOTY what people think about it. Woodym555 17:48, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
I don't think peer review is neccessary. We can always ran the automated one for the MoS fixes. Once we think it is ready we can put it up for GA. Thinks that need doing: The structure and facilities section needs expanded slightly. We need to get some architectural detail in there. It is about the stadium after all. Something about how the Holte End roof is the same design as an aircraft hanger. (I read that somewhere) Other little details such as materials and the facia of the Holte End. We need a photo of that if you can find one. I think i have one somewhere, if not i can ask my season-ticket holding friends to take one. Details about the new electonic turnstiles would be good. That and everything needs referenced of course! Good luck. (I will draw up the history in my sandbox so as to avoid conflicts.) Woodym555 18:26, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I've seen your work. And now I'm copying it! Just for Ipswich Town articles you understand, and I'm rather enjoying it. So far I've got Ipswich Town F.C. and Bobby Robson up to WP:FA, the List of Ipswich Town F.C. managers is currently doing well at WP:FLC and I've just added Ipswich Town F.C. seasons which I'd be very grateful if you could you spend a few minutes commenting on? Cheers! The Rambling Man 17:20, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I think there are a few things you could do with Villa Park but I reckon your best bet is to put it up for a peer review. Let me know when you do because I'd be happy to comment. The Rambling Man 17:37, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

YCFC

Thanks for your support! And I must say, excellent job with all those Aston Villa articles! Mattythewhite 17:46, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Villa Park

Guilty as charged. A bit busy with trying to keep Football (soccer) an FA at the moment (WP:FAR#Football_.28soccer.29), but if I have some spare time before I head to Eastlands I'll take a look. We usually do well against you at home, but with Dunne suspended I have a feeling Carew will cause a few problems. Oldelpaso 09:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

I've given it a brief look, and it looks like a fail at the moment I'm afraid. Primarily, many things need citations, for example the current capacity and the initial construction cost. When I get the opportunity I'll do a proper review encompassing all aspects, and not just referencing. Oldelpaso 12:46, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Frank Barson

Oh right.. are you sure? He has a profile at englandstats.com, which I believe is for full internationals and he is mentioned in List of England international footballers (alphabetical). Mattythewhite 20:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I think that website is just trying to be awkward.. Cheers, Mattythewhite 20:13, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Villa Park photo

Hi - good work on improving the Villa Park article, just a small point - I think the photo of Villa Park "in the early 1900s" is abit misleading - my guess would be that it was taken during the 1940s. There is a fantastic photo of Villa Park from around 1907 I think, from the same position showing the cycle track back in the days when Villa Park was oval shaped. Your picture shows the squared off stands, yet the Holte is still not covered over and no floodlights - so I'd say 1940s or early 50s. Was there no caption underneath the original image?

Villafanuk 00:31 19 Sept 2007

Just a quick word to let you know that I've reserved it for GA review. I'm a bit busy at the moment but I promise I'll do my best to get it done within a week! Cheers. The Rambling Man 12:50, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
