Talk: Bronx: Literature
I am new to Wikipedia, and would appreciate some advice.
I saw that you removed a lot of my info about poetry in the Bronx because it was self promotional.
I appreciate your leaving in the fact that the Trilogy was completed.
I learned last night that I probably should have filled out a COI, as I am the author of the Trilogy. I thought I knew how to do that, but I stumbled on your post first, so I thought to ask you for guidance.
Is there a way of getting in the title of the three books?
Or of mentioning some of the places covered to show that many of the poems are specific to the Bronx?
Any advice is appreciated.

- @Xnorbex: Welcome to Wikipedia! Regarding your question about leaving the title in the three books, I think it's okay to leave in the title. You could add a listing of some locations and I could copyedit it, since I don't want it to go off on too much of a tangent. In the future, you could post on the article's talk page with {{edit request}} and request that someone else make your edit for you, to avoid accusations of COI. I'll post some links on your talk page shortly. Thanks, epicgenius (talk) 19:31, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- I am still awkward at navigating Wikipedia. If I don’t get back to you on something I need to know, you can email me via my website email at: (Redacted)
I would like to add info about Bronx Accents. One of its editors is Lloyd Ultan, who seems to be the official historian of The Bronx. I have tried to construct the info in a way that would make a transition from Nash to BA to the Trilogy.
COI: you know that I am the author of the Trilogy. My work has also appeared in Bronx Accent.
I think it is important to include BA: the poems in it derive from the experience of life in The Bronx; Nash’s poem deals only with a rhyme about its name.
If I am on the right path here, I will recheck for accuracy and try to provide internal and external links to the poets mentioned in the BA section.
Here goes:
Ogden Nash’s couplet “The Bronx No Thonx” and his subsequent blessing, are mentioned in Bronx Accent: A Literary and Pictorial History of the Borough, edited by Llyod Ultan and Barbara Unger and published by Rutgers University Press in 2000.
The book includes the work of Yiddish poets such as Zische Landau, Aaron Glanz-Leyeles, and Louis Goldberg. It offers a selection from Alan Ginsberg’s Kaddish, as his Aunt Elanor and his mother, Naomi, lived near Woodlawn Cemetery. Also featured is Ruth Lisa Schecther’s poem, Bronx, which is described as a celebration of the borough’s landmarks.
There is a selection of works from poets such as: Sandra Maria Esteves, Milton Kessler, Joan Murray, W. R. Rodriguez, Myra Shapiro, Gayl Teller, and Terence Wynch.
W. R. Rodriguez’ Bronx Trilogy (the shoe shine parlor poems et al, concrete pastures of the beautiful bronx, and from the banks of brook avenue) celebrates Bronx people, places, and events. DeWitt Clinton HS, Saint Mary’s Park, and Brook Avenue, are a few of the schools, parks, and streets Rodriguez uses as subjects for his poems.
Xnorbex (talk) 06:03, 2 August 2017 (UTC)8/2/17
- @Xnorbex: I suggest that you combine it into one paragraph, since otherwise it would be a bit long. Otherwise, I personally don't think you added any extra irrelevant details this time, so I'll re-add it, copyediting as necessary. epicgenius (talk) 15:42, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
Dear Epicgenius--
Thank you so much! I suggest putting the Bronx Accents right after Ogden Nash, and Bronx Trilogy last, as that would provide a chronological order (1964, 2000, 2015).
I tried to add internal links to the poets in Bronx Accents. Joan Murray has a Wiki page, but there are two Joan Murray's, so the link got too complicated for me to handle.
I could not figure out how to test the links without losing my date, so I did not test them.
For the sake of simplicity, I did not add external links.
(I cut and pasted from my last talk to you; I do think it is what you posted, but it could be worth a quick check. I am glad you left out the names of the Yiddish poets, as I was dreading checking them for accuracy.)
So this what my suggested revision looks like:
Ogden Nash’s couplet “The Bronx No Thonx” and his subsequent blessing, are mentioned in Bronx Accent: A Literary and Pictorial History of the Borough, edited by Lloyd Ultan and Barbara Unger and published by Rutgers University Press in 2000. The book includes the work of Yiddish poets. It offers a selection from Alan Ginsberg’s Kaddish, as his Aunt Elanor and his mother, Naomi, lived near Woodlawn Cemetery. I wonder if you could write a user script
Hello, Epicgenius,
I saw your prevew-related script at Wikipedia:User scripts/List#Previewing, and I wonder whether you could write a user script that does something fairly simple (I think). Currently, we have one button for previewing a page, and a separate button for showing the diff. Do you think it's possible to have one button that does both of these things at the same time (e.g., the preview, followed by the diff, followed by the edit window)? A editor has asked for this at VPT, and I thought I'd found a script that did this (plus some other things), but I was wrong. (Please {{ping}} me.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:25, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): I might be able to write a script, but there are other users who might be able to do it in a better fashion. (E.g. MusikAnimal, Mr. Stradivarius or Writ Keeper may be able to help you faster. There are probably some other editors too who have better experience than I do at these kinds of scripts.) epicgenius (talk) 20:04, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): I actually already have an old script that does this. Lemme look it up. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 20:05, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/previewAndDiff.js. It's nearly four years old, though, so it probably needs some updates. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 20:08, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Writ Keeper, you're amazing.
- EEng, do you want to give it a try? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:00, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Absolutely. (I did what I could with the category, BTW.) EEng 23:22, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): @EEng: just FYI, the script might not have been working before, but it should be good now. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 00:24, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Absolutely. (I did what I could with the category, BTW.) EEng 23:22, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
Now, can I ask for one more thing? Can I have an <alt>-something shortcut key? (Please, not alt-right.) EEng 01:00, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- @EEng: You got it. I set it to "alt-shift-g", since it's the first one I found that wasn't taken (I tried "alt-shift-b", for "both", but Chrome seems to be doing its own thing with that keystroke). Lemme know if you have a different preference. (sorry for the repeated pings--the repings, if you will. and don't worry, there was *never* any chance of it being alt-right in any sense of the term.) Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 01:23, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, good thing it wasn't alt-right. Oh yeah, by the way, alt+⇧ Shift+b will "Highlight the bookmarks bar (if shown)". Good luck if you have 10,000 bookmarks epicgenius (talk) 01:31, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Well, this is the best thing since sliced bread. Only because I know you'd want to know, there's a slight bug in that, if the rendered page ends with an image or other floated object, the "section heading" (so to speak) Your changes appears next to the image/box, instead of below it. No big deal. Now really, this feature should be a advertised far and wide, or just be part of the standard interface. I'm a fairly careful editor, but about 5% of edits, I have to go back and correct, either because I only checked the Show Changes and I should have also checked the Show Preview (so I didn't see an e.g. formatting issue until I'd saved and it showed me the formatted page). This solves that. Thanks again! Wait. I'm going to try it again right now. <alt><shift>g. <alt><shift>g. <alt><shift>g. <alt><shift>g. Ooooh! It's so refreshing! EEng 03:02, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Uh, oh. Bad news. Sometimes <alt><shift>g performs as advertised, but sometimes it tries to take me to the corresponding Wikidata entry. Please, don't take away my hope! I was so happy! EEng 03:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Guh. I'll have to find another keystroke. Any ideas/preferences? Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 03:54, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- @EEng: Okay, I've reused "alt-shift-o". It's normally "log in", but since this is a user script, you can't use it without being logged in anyway, so there shouldn't be any conflicts. How's that? Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 03:59, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Don't worry, if this initiates a missile attack on North Korea, everyone will assume it's Trump. Thanks again! EEng 05:17, 24 August 2017 (UTC) P.S. I think this request is in Phab somewhere, so if you can find it (I can't) you might add a pointer to this. But really, this should be a standard feature. It's soooooo obvious.
- For the record, someone asked on VPT to put the diff on top of the preview, and I've done just that. (Also, it's totally up to you of course EEng, but if you do the
mw.loader.load("/w/index.php?title=USer:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/previewAndDiff.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
instead of copying and pasting the source code itself, you can get these updates without having to keep modifying your .js page. But it's all good.) Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 13:27, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

I have added additional references, fixed some, and added page numbers. In addition, I have added more information on the construction of the line. This leads to an issue. I am unsure of whether some of this information should go to the sections on the specific phases. Perhaps some of the info on Phases 3 and 4 should go in their section under other phases. Your advice would be appreciated. I also want this article to reach FA-status, but I was wondering if the length is a problem. I don't have a problem with it, but the reviewers for FA might. Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 17:49, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Kew Gardens 613: If the length is a problem, we could split off the history sections into a brand-new article. Then the history could be summarized and condensed. The history sections itself may qualify for FA status, but the main article may need to wait some time due to its constantly-changing nature as per WP:FACR point #1E. In particular, Phase 2 being under construction makes the article relatively "unstable", which is why there is a {{Stable version}} template on the talk page. epicgenius (talk) 22:10, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
