Ottawa high schools

[edit]

I have created a test case for putting school contents by district at Ottawa-Carleton district school board. Why I have done this is explained further on my user page. Anyway, I recall that there were a number of Ottawa area high schools deleted and also that you may have had a hand in them. I would appreciate it if you would put the information that was removed in the district article, where I doubt that anyone will have a problem with it. Thanks, The Steve 14:46, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

Canadian election wikiproject?

[edit]

Hi there. I know that you are a regular contributor to Canadian election topics, and I was wondering if you thought it would be a good idea to create a Wikiproject to standardize some of these articles? --timc | Talk 02:51, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Make sure to refer to, and expand, Wikipedia:election and make note of best practices there. When you standardize try to copy the best practices identified in existing articles. It always makes more sense to copy the aspects of articles that they uniquely do best, than to try to come up with one template or straitjacket. Election coverage will always evolve, so just make note of what each article is doing well, so the next election can copy it.

Liberal election results

[edit]

Geez you're fast. Thanks for completing this table. Will you be doing the other parties? Regards, Kevintoronto 22:22, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I probably will eventually. Earl Andrew 22:31, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

If it would help, I could e-mail you the spreadsheets I've been using. Also, I don't know if we really need to put in the recent election at the bottom of the national table as you've just done for 1972 -- after all, all of the elections are now in a box at the top of each article, and the preceding and following are at the bottom of the article, so putting these in a third time seems like overkill, doesn't it? Regards, Kevintoronto 22:58, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Regional Municipalities

[edit]

Just to clarify, what I'm not clear on is why you would move Sudbury and Hamilton-Wentworth, but leave Ottawa-Carleton and Haldimand-Norfolk as RM of Name. I also have to point out that if "most common name" is a valid criterion, having grown up there I can unequivocally vouch for the fact that Sudbury RM was never used; it was always RM of Sudbury. I know the same pertains in Ottawa; if you purposely left Ottawa as RMOC because that was the more commonly used designation, then Sudbury definitely falls in the same category. (If you just left it because it slipped your mind, though, then I have to admit that I don't really care as long as a consistent rule -- either "most common name" or strict "Name Regional Municipality" -- is applied. Switching one but leaving the other is the part that actually bugs me about it.) Bearcat 01:28, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Gheeeze. That was ages ago. Ya could've said something before now, eh? Bearcat 03:58, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)
There is a need to deal with the fact that borders of places change when they become "regional municipalities". That is, the placed called "Toronto" in 1997 is not the placed called "Toronto" in 2000. See m:spacetime DTD for some related issues.

your are right these shananigans must stop about Belinda Stronach

[edit]

That user(70.49.148.143)re-moved social democratic out of the Belinda Stronach page but I put it back but SimonP won't stop the editing I even reason with him but he won't stop. In Newmarket-Aurora most moderate, socially progressive and social democratic voters did voted for Belinda Stronach and some people hope that Belinda will walk across the floor to the NDP not only that Belinda will keep the NDP sharply to the left but a better vote turn out for the NDP by next election. There is a strong posabilaty if Belinda is in the NDP Cabinent Then Jack Layton will be the Leader of the opposition or maybe Prime Minister (A 1st in the history for the NDP)- michaelm.

As much as I like Belinda for social progressiveness, I cannot possibly see her crossing the floor to the NDP. As much as I like the NDP, I'd rather see her climb to the top of the Conservative Party and become leader some day and eventually Prime Minister. If you have any proof of your claims, I would like to see them. Earl Andrew 19:48, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Ok Earl Andrew Belinda is not happy with the Conservatives and she should not trust Stephen Harper and the Conservative caucus. Belindas views, ideas and her values are more like a social democrat. And she is thinking about crossing the floor to the NDP. Jack Layton need her in the NDP caucus like yesterday - michaelm

Do you have any proof of this? Earl Andrew 06:31, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Not yet but Keep an eye on the news media Belinda Stronach will walk a cross the floor to the NDP.

Well when she does, we will change the page for sure. Earl Andrew 06:57, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

would you please unlock the Belinda Stronach page the truth must come out - michaelm

It is not time yet to make such a move. Earl Andrew 08:46, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I was just in the process of de-populating this category, and I thought my bot was malfunctioning, but then I noticed that you were reverting the edits. This category was listed on WP:CFD and approved for deletion, presumably because it duplicates the list in the article The Greatest Canadian, which is annotated. If you want this category kept for some reason, you will need to bring it up there. If it's safe for me to go ahead and de-populate it, please leave me a message. Thanks! -- Beland 00:52, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The discussion on [[WP:CFD] was deleted in the normal course of cleanup and de-listing. I have restored it so you can read others' comments. -- Beland 01:08, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi! I see that you have created a Canadian subcategory for Category:Coastal towns but Montrealais and I have noticed several issues with many of the communities being added to this subcategory. I will highlight two which I feel are misleading:

  • Many of the communities being added to this subcategory are not "towns".

The following examples from the subcategory are cities: Charlottetown, Sydney and Campbellton. Similarly Chester is a village, and Falmouth is not even a town (although the author of the article stated it is a village) but in fact is a "dispersed rural community".

  • Many of the communities being added to this subcategory are not situated on Canada's three coasts.

I realize that many people now refer to the Great Lakes as being Canada's (or the United States') "fourth coast" (mostly as it relates to shipping, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the marketing efforts of lakeshore communities) and even the Wikipedia article on coast states that a large lake may have a "coast", but I have found very few geoscientists who support this notion. I had read that NOAA apparently introduced the term for the Great Lakes as a means for some of their scientists to qualify for additional federal research funding, but that is purely conjecture. The problem here is defining what is a "large" lake - the issue could become very subjective, depending on one's particular locale.

To keep things objective, The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines a coast as 1. the part of the land adjoining or near the sea. Some other definitions can be found at Global Oceans.

I would suggest that communities downriver of Trois-Rivières on the St. Lawrence River could be considered both coastal and riverine, however the only communities in southern Quebec that are truly coastal are those on the south coast of the Gaspé peninsula (ie. on Bay of Chaleur), communities on the Magdalen Islands, and communities on the Côte-Nord that are east of Sept-Îles (or possibly Havre-St-Pierre). Obviously communities situated directly on Hudson, James and Ungava bays are all coastal as well.

The Great Lakes is a bit murkier, given the fact that someone has included large lakes along with oceans for the definition of a coast. At any rate, the only Ontario communities that can be considered having ocean coasts that I can think of are obviously all situated on Hudson/James Bay: Moosonee, Moose Factory, possibly Galeton, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Attawapiskat, possibly Lake River, possibly Peawanuck, and Fort Severn.

I would suggest that for Ontario communities located on the shores of the Great Lakes (and those communities in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota), it would be best to create a category called "Towns on Great Lakes shorelines" or something to that effect. I also wouldn't mind seeing the source that the author/editor of the coast article used for adding large lakes into the mix since so many reference sources only assign the definition with respect to oceans, but that's another issue entirely...

Manitoba riding names

[edit]

Earl: Unless you have any strong objections, I plan to revert the Russell and Assiniboia pages to their previous titles. (There used to be a provincial riding in Ontario called Russell, and I believe there was a riding in Saskatchewan called Assiniboia -- simply calling the Manitoba ridings "provincial electoral districts" doesn't quite cover all bases). I think there might be a similar problem with Springfield and St. Johns ...

Gaymap.png

[edit]

Hello. Just thought I'd let you know you forgot to include California on that map. California now as a marriage equivalent under a domestic partnership. lol It's pretty much the same exact thing.

The map may have an error in South America. There is a dark-blue 'country' (?) just to the north of Uruguay. Does this mean that a part of Brazil has adopted same-sex unions, or is that an error as I think it may be?

Hey EA. Might I trouble you for a quicky move... Liberal Party of British Columbia to British Columbia Liberal Party. The latter is the registered name at Elections BC, and a past edit to fiddle with redirects on the BCLP page is preventing a quick fix on my part.

Hi Earl: I'm glad I read to the end of the page first. I'd like to use a copy of your Manitoba map and mark on it Manitoba Hydro generating stations and the Nelson River Bipole transmission lines. Do you see any concerns here? It's probably easier to use your map than try to get permission to use the map included in the MH annual report, which I'll use as a reference. (Of course I'll identify the map source)

No, but you may try their websites. I can be certain though, as I recall it when PEI had their last election (they specifically mentioned it) and when I quizzed my father, he knew the answer because he remembered it from when he went to PEI. Earl Andrew 22:04, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I had been putting Template:Unreferenced tags on new articles without them, saw a pile of these and then realised it would be more efficient to come to your talk page and ask you to put sources on articles (as per Wikipedia:Cite sources directly :-) Do please continue with this series, of course! - David Gerard 03:21, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Todd Staffaroni

[edit]

Any particular reason why you consider the Todd Staffaroni link on Curling to be "suspicious"? A quick Google turns him up on several lists of "famous curlers"... Alfvaen 19:07, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)

You're right, it does seem that any page that lists Todd Staffaroni does have the exact same list of players as on the Wikipedia page. On first blush I thought that the Wiki article writer had used one of those as the source, but it could have been the other way around. I don't have any personal knowledge of the existence, and certainly Kerry Burtnyk, for instance, shows up on a lot more pages. The only legit page with Staffaroni is http://www.stpaulcurlingclub.org/schedules/1st_half/thu450.html , so he might be a real curler but not a real famous curler. Alfvaen 04:44, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

Cumberland Ontario

Federal elections charts

[edit]

I’d like to get some consensus on what to do about colours in the elections charts, but I don’t want to get into a revert war, so I’m asking people to express their opinions here before any changes are made. Since you have contributed to these pages, I’m inviting your comments. I am initiating this discussion because some of the colours that are currently being used are too dark for some monitors so that it is difficult to read the text. The point of adding colours to the charts is to make it easier for readers to derive information from the charts. This goal is foiled by using colours dark enough to obscure the text. The Wikipedia style guide is clear on the issue:

Use colour sparingly. Computers and browsers vary: you cannot know how much colour is presented on the recipient's machine if any. Wikipedia is international: colours have different meaning in different cultures. Too many colours on one page make them look cluttered and unencyclopedic. Use the colour red only for alerts and warnings.

So let’s choose some colours that are light enough that red Wilkilinked text and blue Wikilinked text are both easy to read through.

Please join the discussion at: Talk:Canadian federal election results since 1867. Thanks, Kevintoronto 17:23, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

As of March 25, 2005, there are an additional (6) articles listed for deletion under the POV notion that schools are non-notable (even though this is invalid reasoning as per the Wikipedia deletion policy). Please be aware that the following schools are actively being discussed and voted upon:

In response to this cyclical ordeal, a Schoolwatch programme has been initiated in order to indentify school-related articles which may need improvement and to help foster and encourage continued organic growth. Your comments are welcome and I thank you again for your time. --GRider\talk

three-letter codes

[edit]

I'm not sure why you mention IOC codes, most of the usages of these templates are in political articles, eg European parliament pages.

I'd actually suggest going to full spelled-out names, eg Template:CROATIA, to make it foolproof and for maximum flexibility.

See the discussion at User_talk:Aris_Katsaris#Three-letter_templates.

-- Curps 06:28, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

PS, your "do not post below this line" is not very convenient if you use the standard "+" tab to add a comment. -- Curps 06:29, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

How is typing {{PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA}} any longer than typing [[People's Republic of China]] ? It's the exact same thing, except uppercased and using curly braces instead of brackets.

Remember, the only places we'd use the templates are places where we're replacing the existing text. So this is the exact same number of bytes. -- Curps 06:47, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The problems with three-letter codes of any kind are:

  • the average ordinary Wikipedia editor will not be familiar with them, no matter which standard we use. This means only elite editors in the know will be able to edit articles that use these frankly cryptic codes. Not a problem for you or me, but think of the average user.
  • some will conflict with existing usages, like Template:IND for subways
  • no one organization that invents three-letter codes will supply all the ones we might eventually need. What if we want to add flags to the list of states of Germany, at Germany#States? What if we want flags of all the provinces of Canada, in an article on Canadian elections? These are all perfectly plausible uses. -- Curps 06:58, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, five-letter codes are still a problem, because they'd be our invention and therefore completely non-standard. Do we really want to force everyone who wants to edit an article to memorize our list of five-letter codes... this is a big barrier to the fundamental principle of "anyone can edit Wikipedia". The Wikipedia community at large would probably object to this, and revert our changes. -- Curps 07:09, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Uh, do we not want what? To try to prevent others from editing Wikipedia? I'm not sure I'm following you. -- Curps 07:12, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I read the wrong thing. Earl Andrew 07:14, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, actually, I think this might need to be proposed to the Wikipedia community at large before it's widely implemented. I believe Wikipedia:Village pump (news) is the standard place for announcing new templates. I do anticipate there could very well be objections to the perceived cryptic nature of three-letter or five-letter codes. The idea of including flags is a cool one, but it's the specific implementation that people might object to. This probably needs some wider input and consensus. -- Curps 07:26, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Election maps

[edit]

I have made two maps for the Manitoba election 2003 and the Yukon 2002, and I believe that the maps you have map are much better. I would like to request that you recreate the two maps that I have made so that they reach a higher standard. MS123

Thankyou for doing this, however I'm wondering if you like the colours I chose for the PC's on the Manitoba map. MS123

Thanks, it looks pretty good. Do you plan on doing pre 1999 ontario elections anytime soon? MS123

I dunno, they'd be something I'd like to see. If you don't want to put alot of effort into it(because it probably takes a long time) and you can get the maps, you can post it and I can finish them. MS123

as one of the participants of Subnational entity project I would like you to vote on Talk:Papua (Indonesian province). I do not see why provinces of Italy are something special, to be treated different to 99% of the subdivisions worldwide. Currently for the move there is Support:Oppose:Neutral = 1:1:1 . Maybe you can have a look at Talk:Provinces of Italy regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:12, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Three revert rule

[edit]

You have been blocked for 24 hours under the three revert rule. If you wish to appeal please contact another administrator or the mailing list.Geni 22:36, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

To quote from WP:3RR "Administrators blocked under this provision must not unblock themselves." I susgest you stay very quite unless you want to be involved in the stupidest arbcom case everGeni 23:15, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The 3RR applies to pretty much everything (exception are vanderlism and posibly your user page). As a general rule I assume admins have a vague knowlage of policy. Well you seem to think that arbcom should have a roll here and I'm not going to dissagree I'm in the process of opening a case.Geni 09:54, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I saw you unblocked yourself. Whatever you do, don't do that again. You can appeal to other admins and the mailing list as Geni said. Using your admin powers to undo a block on yourself is specifically forbidden by policy. Mgm|(talk) 12:10, Apr 2, 2005 (UTC)

I'm an extremely busy person on Wikipedia, with lots of projects open. I cannot afford to be blocked for even one minute, I am sorry if I broke policy, but I feel not being blocked is more beneficial to Wikipedia. I do not have time to appeal to other Wikipedians. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:42, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
That sounds like a very unhealthy attitude to take; I highly doubt your edits are more important than anyone else's. I still agree with other admins by saying that you could have just asked someone else to unblock you, via IRC or the mailing list. Just about everyone would have. If you seriously believe you can't stand to be blocked for a minute, maybe that's your cue to take a Wikibreak and get back into reality a little bit. Mike H 21:42, Apr 2, 2005 (UTC)

No no, my edits are not more important as other people's edits. However, it is the principal of the action. Plus, I am not familiar enough with IRC or mailing lists to ask someone to unblock me. I'm sorry if I sound a bit arrogant, but I have an incredible passion towards expanding Wikipedia, and I didn't think it was very fair what happened. In addition, it's not up to you to decide if I need a wikibreak. That will be a personal decision, if I chose to. -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:08, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The history shows that the empty article was created by 65.94.152.160, and this was the only version of the article. Ottawa-stub

[edit]

I feel that you have added the Ottawa stub template to far to many articles. You marked over two hundred pages with it, the vast majority of pages we have relating to Ottawa. Please remember that a stub is defined as " a very short article, generally of one paragraph or less." Moreover marking almost everything with the template makes it useless as it is impossible to find those pages that are actually much in need of expansion. - SimonP 17:59, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)

What to do with the article is still being contested and has been recently re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland).

I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. There still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. Party logos

[edit]

Sorry about the delay responding—caught me between work and home, actually. :)

I'm open to the idea of finding a way to "hardwire-in" political logos to the template system—in general I'm fond of visual stuff and the like, so don't take the revert as a slight against the notion of eyecandy. The only problem is that the logos aren't constant time-period-to-time-period and province-to-province-to-federal... so when you stuck in the federal Liberal logo, for instance, it immediately appeared over provincial liberal candidates on provincial election pages using that template, and had we hypothetically finished off a 2000 election page with a candidate list, the 2003 Martin-era swoosh would have been appearing where the Chretien-era ||| * L should have been.

I'm pondering ways to adapt the template system so there might be wiggle room for varying logos, but nothing simple is coming to mind right now... the only thing that's coming to mind is to code a different set of templates for each party in each timeframe in each jurisdiction, which seems to be running contrary to the original notion of simplifying things for wikipedians. I'll give it some more thought; if you can come up with some possible workarounds I'll be all-ears. -The Tom 23:35, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well, I think it's a lengthier conversation that needs to be had at some point. Considering there's still a vocal section that doesn't think there should be more than two pixels of colour per page, I'd like to win that battle before stirring the pot again ;). As your Sask example shows, each new iteration of a provincial party/party in another era/provincial party in another era requires a whole new template-set, which does muddy the waters beyond their current muddyness by a considerable margin. Right now, there's one colhead set and one row set of templates keyed to each colour template; now we could get into situations where someone changes the NDP colour and it doesn't carry over everywhere, for instance. Again, I'm not opposed in principle, I'm just thinking of a half-dozen examples of where things will start to look ugly—where we get logos for some and not all, for instance, or from back in the day where getting verifiable logos becomes difficult (for example, I've been hunting on the web for some time for a John Turner-era federal Liberal logo to no success—it was the one with the solid maple leaf in the centre, and then a frame of a fractured leaf behind it. Only fifteen years old, natural governing party, and nothing.) I'd rather get this template system fully-implemented for a bit and getting the main information out there before we collectively start turning our energies into hours and hours on aesthetics, especially when there's reason to believe that all such a hunt will do is draw attention to the gaps in our knowledge. -The Tom 01:05, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Carleton-Charlotte

[edit]

You seem to have changed the title of this article to include an m rule; I understood that including such characters in titles was deprecated, but in any case it should be an n rule. Is it just misrepresented by my browsers? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:47, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm very surprised. By "we", do you mean Canadians? I ask because I've never come across any style guide (on either side of the Atlantic) that countenances the use of m rules to connect words. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:37, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh yes, I can see the difference, and the need for a typographical distinction; it's just that normal usage is a hyphen for the former and an n rule for the latter. Still, if it's done for all of them, it would probably take too much effort to change them. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:46, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

District articles

[edit]

Earl - one thing at a time, Ok? It's easier to create them in big batches with a semi-automated process (not a robot, just a handy template), then go back and disambig as necessary when the federal districts are created. Page moves are easy, and I'm aware of the issue. Besides, the conflict doesn't exist until such time as the federal article is created. Fawcett5 12:49, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Just a couple more things - for the provincial-federal page moves you already made or may continue to make, don't forget to add the correct category (these are now standardized for all provinces as [Category:Province|Territory federal|provincial|territorial electoral district]. Also, the link you provided doesn't seem to work. Finally, I will adopt the convention you seem to have settled on -> "place (electoral district)" for federal and "place (provincial electoral district)" for provincial. Fawcett5 13:15, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Why should you be telling me what to do? It looked like to me that there had been more than one federal district at different times. Fawcett5 20:31, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I too am not really interested in squabbling. The convention for "re-animated" districts works fine when it was in the same province both times - when it was in different provinces, this breaks down (screws up the categorization and are really not comparable entities anyway). Right now it would say "Nova Scotia electoral district" and "British Columbia electoral district", which to me, if I did not know the convention, screams "provincial". I know that there are a lot of links using that convention already, but really, it is an easy job for one of the bot guys to take care of. Actually, I am increasingly in favour, whenever there is a an duplication, of standardly using the top-level (electoral district) strictly for a disambig page. Anyway, I will stick with the current convention for the moment, and look forward to hearing your thoughts. Fawcett5 20:52, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC) By the way, please notice that I have now also built into the template I am using a section that appears in the article that can be uncommented to facilitate disambiguation... Fawcett5 21:04, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Earl, another question has arisen about the electoral district articles... It has been pointed out to me that the use of emdashes in article titles has been deprecated in the MoS (they don't display properly in some browsers, and can't be typed from the keyword, so searches fail). This causes a problem for articles that use both hyphens and emdashes in the title, but I don't see much alternative but to use hyphens. Sometimes the hyphen part can reasonably be replaced with a space (imaginary example St-Wombat—Quokka would become St. Wombat-Quokka). What's your take on this? I have already created lots of articles with emdashed titles, but these can be easily moved to the hyphenated version, which will also make a suitable redirect. Also, what about when a district changes names from "Wombat and Quokka" to "Wombat—Quokka"? It seems silly to have a separate article, so which format do you think should be used for the article name? Note that there are already a couple of instances where probable duplicate articles have been created, but by cruising the defunct electoral district categories, it usually becomes obvious when such near-name duplicates occur - I plan to go through when all the articles are created and redirect some of these to their twin. Fawcett5 01:59, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Pope names

[edit]

Good work, Earl Andrew. Now all you need to do is go through, put in PP. after the Latin name (it's part of their "official name"). I didn't look back past JPI, but have you gone back to Peter? You probably should. Given that you are fighting for standardisaton, you should probably address that lack.Grace Note 23:34, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Your argument for adding them was that they are the "official" name. Now you say you don't want the official name, just the Latin name. What is your justification for using the Latin name?Grace Note 00:04, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm not arguing aesthetics, Earl Andrew. There was an agreement on the infobox talk page not to use Latin names. You breached it, insisting that you wanted to use official names, as are used on Robert Kocharyan. But you didn't use the official name and now say you don't want to. I am going to revert your changes. It's a lot of unnecessary work for me, but I feel that the boxes should not carry Latin translations without good reason. Earl Andrew wants it is not good reason.

I'm only going to revert once and I won't check the pages. I trust you not to do it again without talking to me and convincing me of the rightness of your position. I'm not fundamentally opposed to the official names and I want you to be happy with the outcome. I just don't think you convinced me. Grace Note 00:18, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Canadian political parties chart

[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your chart on List of political parties in Canada. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a bunch of debate about this. Props for the pretty picture and for daring the controversy. I think it might be useful to add the social freedom/economic freedom basis for the axes in the legend by way of explanation. Can I ask how did you decide to put which party where? Ground Zero 21:51, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I guess my comment would have to do with the Conservative and Progressive Canadian parties. They are placed on the same social policy plane. The PC Party, however, calls itself "socially progressive, fiscally conservative", while the Cons seem to have no interest in being socially progressive, what with Stephen Harper addressing anti-SSM rallies and what-not. Not to mention, only 4 of their 99 MPs voted for SSM. I know that the PC Party probably doesn't have an official position yet, but I would expect that opinion in the party would be more evenly split. That is, if they could get more than one member in a room at the same time. And while Haperper wants to avoid the abortion isssue, there is large cluster of his backbenchers who are chomping at the bit to bring in new legislatio to restrict/eliminate it. Just my thoughts. Do with it what you will. Ground Zero 22:24, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Canadian Time Zones

[edit]

Earl, since you're a Canadian, and you're interested in time zones, I'm hoping you can help me clear up some of the misinformation in the time zone articles. My big question is: who named the Canadian time zones? This is of particular interest because three Canadian zones have the same name as their U.S. equivalent. So it would be useful to know whether Canada has an agreement with the U.S. about this, or just chose the same names to avoid confusion.

I'd also like to know who draws the boundaries. In the U.S., Congress draws them, and everybody has to go along. I gather things are more granular in Canada, but I'd like to get specifics. ---Isaac R 08:00, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Can we keep the discussion on your talk page? I don't mind watching it, and I find it confusing to switch back and forth.

I didn't expect you to know the answer off the top of your head. Sometimes you have to go out and do some actual offline research. In this case, somebody needs to go to a reference librarian and ask for help finding out who controls the naming and boundaries of Canadian time zones. I could do it, but a Canadian librarian would be a lot more likely to have the right documents at hand. ---Isaac R 20:10, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I must admit, libraries are not my forté. Perhaps I can pop the question up at the Canadian Wiki board to see if anyone knows the answers. If that fails, try the Reference desk -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:18, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Kids and Kylie

[edit]
Hi EarlAndrew, I don't think this is the correct interpretation and yet at the same time I don't think it's vandalism. I think it's somebody's (the contributor's?) personal interpretation of the lyrics rather than the songwriter's intention, and as such, should be removed. As it's neither complete nonsense, or something offensive, I don't think it's vandalism. From what I've read in a Robbie Williams interview the meaning is more like, the couple are not happy together but are staying together because of the kids "I don't mind doing it for the kids". The lyrics are quite cryptic - Kylie said in another interview she didn't really know what it was all about, she was just given it to sing. I think therefore any interpretation of the lyrics should have a reference to support the inclusion. Rossrs 02:13, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Earl. I saw your updated Gay laws map. You appear to have changed Australia to mostly allowing civil unions, which is news to me. Are you sure this is true? User:Maclean25 posted the following issues my talk page for consideration and I think an opinion from a "seasoned" political editor such as yourself would be helpful.

Please review the layout of Bulkley Valley-Stikine. This is the prototype of how all other districts will be organised. Specifically, please comment on the following issues:
  • headings (demographics, geography, history, election results all make sense)
  • Total votes (Total valid votes or Total votes cast? there is a 33 vote difference which would affect the 100.00% in the next column)
  • Voter turnout (currently it is "Registered Voters Who Voted" because it is the easiest stat to get; alt is "% Eligible Voters Who Voted"
  • Demographics (anyway to alter table to show more detailed stats, like pop in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2005; avg. income (census or election year?), unemployment (year?), or whatever may be relevant.
  • the images (just something I'm fiddling with, do they make sense?)

Cheers, DoubleBlue (Talk) 14:02, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. My comments on these questions are posted at Maclean25's talk page.

  • Hi, I created a new election box template and I'm starting to use that one for the BC provincial ridings. It includes campaign expenses. For first-past-the-post elections this is one of the most crucial pieces of info for understanding the race & results. Now I am almost happy with the election box information. Prototype at Bulkley Valley-Stikine. Let me know what you think. $ info for 1991 and 1996 only, difficulty finding 2001 data. maclean25 05:44, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Ontario political compass

[edit]

Just a question for you. The Ontario NDP is placed closer to the center than the federal NDP, and I just want to know if that was intentional? I think Howie Hampton is more of a socialist than Layton is. Layton is more libertarian than Hampton is, but I think politically Howie's NDP is more socialist in nature.

MS123

You can't really compare provincial seats to federal seats. The federal NDP vote was 20% in Ontario, and in the provincial election it was 14%. Also, Howie doesn't seem to like Bob Rae. He still is pissed about the public auto thing. If you look at Howie he has said that he thinks swedish socialism is the best way to go, which, in Ontario isn't all that moderate. I don't think a major change is needed, just a shift to at least the federal NDP point.

Thanx abunch

I noticed you renamed articles like Fort Severn, Ontario to Fort Severn 89, Ontario to add the number. While this is the official designation, I thought Wikipedia convention is to use the most common name. So in the case of Fort Severn, shouldn't we just go by "Fort Severn" without the 89? Samw 03:15, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've continued the discussion at Talk:Fort Severn 89, Ontario. Samw 03:01, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NB election regions

[edit]

I overwrote your edit to the regions in NB. I understand your desire to have cities distinct, but it is not really plausible in New Brunswick as there are a number of ridings that are parts of one city and parts not. The ridings of Saint John-Fundy and Saint John-Kings include large portions of areas which are not a part of the city of Saint John (this is why they have a hyphen and the other SJ seats do not). Moncton Crescent also contains large parts of both the city of Moncton and areas outside of the city. - Jord 19:09, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ottawa Senators

[edit]

Hm. For one, that column is in variance to those used for other NHL team articles, and is overly wide for the text contained.

For a second, there's no need for a "current" coach or a "current" general manager. Most people will figure out that the sole people listed as coaches or GMs are the current incumbents.

For a third, "North-American" is not the proper form for the appellation.

For a fourth, very few people (if any) who view the article will need to be informed that the National Hockey League is a North American league; it would be difficult for a league that encompassed Ottawa to be anything but.

[edit]

I just now noticed the brightened image you put up about a month ago - I found it a bit too washed out and grainy. I downloaded the original and played with contrast and gamma, and uploaded again - hopefully this new one works a bit better... Radagast 22:26, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

Then, perhaps a new photo would work best; the direct sunlight on the side combined with the shade on the front makes for a very unworkable pic. Of course, being nowhere near Ottawa, I can't help in that regard, so I'll just shut up now... Radagast 00:01, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Naming conventions (provinces)

[edit]

If you are interested in reducing the naming variants for provinces in wikipedia from 14 to something near 3 you may like to have a look at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (provinces). Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:34, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Senatorial divisions

[edit]

I'm running to the biggest political geography nuts I know of for a hand here. I'm rather displeased with the article at Canadian Senate Divisions which strongly seems to imply Senate divisions are anything more than political ephemera that dance in the minds of Senators. It was anonymously assembled, and on further examination it seems someone called Cloveious is now putting together articles like Calgary Senate division which perpetuate the mistake on the first article and treat senate tags as if they were ridings--"created from" older divisions on certain dates, and so on. That definately seems VfDish. Just wondering if you had any commentary for the Talk page -The Tom 18:45, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Gaymap and Australia

[edit]

I think there may be a problem with the Australia section. Whilst the Same-sex marriage article is (to my knowledge) true in saying that " Australia currently recognizes same-sex partnerships in all but two of its territories: Victoria and South Australia.", these "partnerships" do not (again, to my knowledge), as the civil union article says, have a "civil status similar to marriage". Tasmania is the only state with civil unions, and thus for Australia, this revision is the correct one. See also Same-sex marriage in Australia for more details.

Could this be updated? Thanks, and HTH Dysprosia 02:45, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The mainland should all be light green (No same-sex unions), that is, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales/ACT. Tasmania is correct with mild green (Same-sex unions). Thanks Dysprosia 00:05, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, but the gaymap is wrong again. Could you please fix it? I'll have a word with the one who keeps changing it. Thanks Dysprosia 02:51, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's the same problem as last time. The current revision does not have the proper colours. Dysprosia 04:55, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Move request

[edit]

Don't want to trouble ppl with all the bureaucracy at WP:RM, so I was wondering if you had a sec would you mind moving George Baker (Newfoundland and Labrador politician) to George Baker (politician) for relatively obvious reasons? Looks like someone thought it was good to get needlessly complex in terms of article naming. TIA! -The Tom 08:14, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Grrr. This wouldn't be half as bad if there wasn't a user or users who also keeps insisting on moving politicians to articles with their full names rather than what they were actually called in the media. James Aloysius McGrath being what led me Bakerwards in the first place. -The Tom 18:16, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Well, Wikipediawide naming conventions are fairly clear on the point--name in common usage--which is why we have Paul Martin, not Paul Edgar Phillippe Martin; Joe Volpe not Giuseppe Volpe. The thing is, the information on less-contemporary politicians on the 'pedia is often pulled from sources like the National Archives and Library of Parliament, which make reference to ppl like "Thomas Edward Siddon" despite the fact that they are known outside the world of dusty books as Tom Siddon, and that if Wikipedia was around in 1985 there'd be no question whatsoever where the article would be. -The Tom 04:31, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Demographics

[edit]

Sorry for reverting your changes so fascistly. I was (am) frustrated by a lot of the changes made by another user and got carried away. I read the article you pointed me to regarding Whites and am still not convinced that they are technically thought of as a race by statisticians, but I could be wrong. The term Caucasian actually encompasses more and I think it is more correct. Doesn't matter. With regard to religions, you're right, Airdrie is pretty homogenous anyway. Thought about it after, and I think an "other" category is probably the simplest way out there. I will add it back. Once again, I apologize for my frustration. -Tyson2k

Actually, you're right. Ethnicity does not mean the same thing as race. That is exactly why I used it. Race may not be a politically incorrect term as such but it is most definitely outdated. There are very few anthropomorphically significant differences between "races" beyond those which are purely superficial. Unfortunately, StatsCan is only able to use these generally meaningless superficial traits to differentiate ethinically distinct people. Thus, race, which does little more than differentiate people based on appearance is used as a substitute for ethnicity which is probably impossible to quantify. Ethnicity embodies those aspects of a group of people which are predominately cultural and may or may not encompass physical traits such as skin colour. By using the term ethnicity, I was merely trying to to apply quantities (which can only truly be used when discussing race) to ethnic groups. This was only an effort to modernize the terminology of the article such that is was more descriptive of modern cosmopolitan society. Thus, ethnicity should figure much more prominently in a description of a city's culture. As far as I'm concerned, "race" is becoming more of an irrelevant term as our alledgedly progressive society moves away from differentiating people based merely on skin colour and other physical characteristics. That said, it was far easier to fit "politically incorrect" in the edit summary than what I just wrote. Since StatsCan uses the term race, then you had might as well use it too. I just happen to think that race is far less important than the diverse and colourful cultural differences that make people unique. - Tyson2k
Actually, I think you're the confused one. The definition of ethnicty which I subscribe to is nearly identical to this one from StatsCan [4]. Like I said, ethnicity includes race but it also includes much more of that which I believe to be within the spirit of diversity. And as I said above, using ethnicity to describe the statisitics in question was not right (you were right) since ethnicity is not as easily quantifiable as race... it was more of a gesture on my part. My point was (and still is), is that stats on race are not all that important. A desciption of a place's ethnicity (sans the numbers) would be far more valuble in communicating a cultural composition. We're on the same side of the fence here buddy. The only difference is that I don't think racial statisitics are all that important. And I still think the term "race" is a little heavy-handed and regressive, even if it's not politically incorrect. I changed your edits from "Race" to "Racial Diversity". I think that it softens the term. I hope you can at least agree on that. By the way, StatsCan only keeps stats on ethnic origin. That means literally... a person's place of cultural origin or heritage. This is completely different from what I'm talking about. Ethnicity is not easily quantifiable and encompasses many things. That is why it's a far richer term. -Tyson2k.
I would like to see these stats on ethnicity that go to CMAs and provinces. I don't fully understand where these numbers would come from. Anyway, I'm happy as long as we're at a concensus. As long as we agree, we should try to standardize some more pages so that they match this template. And as long as you mentioned it, don't even get me started on the way the US handles race. The Americans are very big into racial prfiling and use it for everything from university admissions to jobs, etc. I think this is one of the more disgusting aspects of American culture and one of the most regressive aspects of it as well. It truly baffles me that race should ever matter anymore. It seems to me that the Americans (and to a lesser degree, every other western country as well... but mostly the Americans) have been having a lot of difficulty cleaning those skeletons out of its closet. -Tyson2k

Also, thank-you for pointing out that Aboriginals were not considered visible minorities. I was not aware of that. -Tyson2k

There's no obvious link I could see on how to send you a personal message.

How do you change the title of an article? I'd like to change Jean Blaquiere to Jean Blaquiére (adding the accent), although admittedly, it is easier to use the Search function when one does not need to include the accent in typing the name.

Population

[edit]

Please stop reverting population figures to 2001 StatsCan info on Alberta pages. These are well researched census figures from municipal governments. They are completely legit. However, I'm not suprised that you were confused as it appears that someone went ahead and relabelled them "2005" when they are actually 2004 numbers. - Tyson2k

I'm going to reply here, since you dont seem to be logged on. My concern was that those may have not been the top 10 most populous places based on the estimates, as some municipalities may have moved up or down from the list. -- Earl Andrew - talk 06:24, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Canada's soccer record

[edit]

I haven't seen it be updated in a long time. If it has, I appologize, but I don't think constantly changing data should appear at Wikipedia, unless someone wants to do the legwork to make sure it's up to date. I guess one can always put at "as of (date)" on top of that, but what's the point if this can be better serve as a link to an outside source (as opposed to being a direct paste from one)? --Dryazan 20:45, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My bad! But put "as of (date)" then? --Dryazan 20:51, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Central Economy

[edit]

Dear Earl Andrew, how are you doing? Could i trouble you for that scan from the atlas as i don t have access to it or any other atlas and i d really like to see how it differs from 'Economy'? i m from very near there and would like to get the placenaming straight as i wrote in the write up i did for Economy, Nova Scotia that 'Central Economy' is non-offical (although i seem to recall from childhood there being a road sign marked Central Economy in to no surprise the centre of the village flat). however, the www.destination-ns.com NS gov't tourism site does not list it. in the meantime i ll put it back on the Colchester County article list if you haven t already and link it to Economy. Take care! -Mayumashu 01:59, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

thanks a bunch Earl Andrew for the map - where (and how) i m living i m solely depend for resources on what i get for free off the net and i couldn t seem to bring up any maps with the proper detail. Yeah i agree that the Central Economy looks to be an alternative for Economy or the later a general reference to the area at large where there s also Lower and Upper Economy - i ll reword the article i did on Economy to reflect this. all the best! -Mayumashu 07:40, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ontario-geo-stub

[edit]

Hi Earl Andrew! I must say I'm mightily impressed by the number of Canadian geo-stubs that have your name on them... just thought you'd like to know that Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting has split four subcategories from Category:Canada geography stubs because it was getting too big for editors to find their way around easily. Next time you go on a stub-making geographic spree, you might find them - particularly {{Ontario-geo-stub}} more useful than the generic {{Canada-geo-stub}} (it would help us, too , because then we wouldn't have to re-sort them later!). The other three, BTW, are {{BrColumbia-geo-stub}}, {{Alberta-geo-stub}}, and {{Quebec-geo-stub}}. Between them, these four accounted for about 80% of Canada's geography stubs, and none of the other provinces had anywhere near the sort of criterion levels for splitting off more subcategories. Grutness...wha? 12:01, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Troop numbers

[edit]

Sorry, I misunderstood the numbers, that's why I kept putting "in millions" instead of "in thousands" on the page List of countries by number of active troops. I must say, it's very confusing because no one thinks of 1 million troops as 1,000 x 1,000? --Mb1000 28 June 2005 16:23 (UTC)

Histograms

[edit]

Hey Earl. Thanks for bring that to my attention-- I'm a little grumpy, because getting all the templates-within-templates working there was a really drawn-out process and I was really glad when it came out looking quite nice. I think what happened was someone converted how the wikimarkup for tables converts over to HTML, so the code that used to place cells horizontally now spits them out stacked. I think I'll go exploring this on the wild wooly frontier of MediaWiki (or whereever it is that that stuff gets set) tomorrow. -The Tom 30 June 2005 06:07 (UTC)

Finally got around to getting an inquiry in place over on MetaWiki—hope something comes of it. -The Tom 9 July 2005 04:04 (UTC)

Highway 61

[edit]

I'm not convinced that U.S. Highway 61 - Ontario provincial highway 61 should be a single article. I really think it should be two separate articles that link to each other. Bearcat 1 July 2005 18:52 (UTC)

Actually, it wasn't the same page twice; it was just a redirect. Which is still wrong, certainly...I'll probably tackle it after I'm done undoing the guy who categorized every GO Transit station in Category:List of GO Stations, Category:GO Transit and Category:Transportation in Ontario. Oy ge-frickin'-valt. Bearcat 1 July 2005 19:01 (UTC)
Nope...I know nothing about it. Bearcat 1 July 2005 19:38 (UTC)

Barrie/Canada

[edit]

All coverage of the events are referring to it as Live 8 Canada and I don't even think I've heard Barrie mentioned. Yes, I know it says that on the web site, but when it so blatantly says "Canada" across the back of the stage I think that has more weight to it.

No, there wasn't "consensus" on the talk page. There wasn't even a discussion. Before reverting (particularly with an inappropriate "WTF?") you should've taken it there to put across your view, and I'd appreciate it if you did that now. violet/riga (t) 2 July 2005 21:19 (UTC)

I have family that live in Canada and happen to love the place, so please don't take it as POV. I am basing it on what I can see from the UK feed, and they're not going to use "Barrie" because few people know where that is. It's not really Toronto either, and everything I've seen/heard is using Canada. It's not ideal, I know, but I was trying to get it consistent with how the Live 8 organisers themselves are referring to it. Perhaps we should use the fuller titles (ie. "Hyde Park, London", "Makuhari Messe, Tokyo" and "Park Place, Barrie"). violet/riga (t) 2 July 2005 22:04 (UTC)
Then have a go at all the channels covering it in the UK as I must be getting my POV from them. violet/riga (t) 2 July 2005 22:10 (UTC)

I really can't believe that you placed and NPOV flag (a) on a template, (b) while we're actively discussing it and (c) when I suggested a solution. That really is poor form and shows your own blatant bias. violet/riga (t) 2 July 2005 22:13 (UTC)

Thanks. It's just that I spent ages sorting the things out as best as I could gather was being presented to the world by the organisers. As said above, I really don't have a POV against Canada. More for it, in fact. violet/riga (t) 2 July 2005 22:16 (UTC)

Hey Earl I can help you with the Park Place page, Just to let you know some of your facts are way off--Jbfraser 3 July 2005 16:22 (UTC)

Hi Earl thanks for fixing that pic for me on the Barrie live 8 page--JB 9 July 2005 04:50 (UTC)

New Brunswick parishes etc.

[edit]

I've noticed you have been creating several articles on parishes and such in New Brunswick; as well as other census subdivisions in other provinces. As a native New Brunswicker, I can assure you that few, if any, locals talk about parishes, and I'd be willing to bet fewer than 10-20% of New Brunswickers even know they exist. They have little legal status today, other than for census purposes, historical research and in surveying. I don't see the point of these long-winded articles, and would instead suggest that articles be written on individual communities instead. Kirjtc2 3 July 2005 06:09 (UTC)

Ottawa Senators (redux)

[edit]

I am somewhat mystified at your insistent reversions. The original Ottawa Senators/Silver Seven won more Cups, won more games, had more Hall of Famers, and had more league championships up to the end of the Western/Pacific league than any other team, and not by some, by a LOT. This is no more a "point of view" than are claims that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest scorer in NHL history. I'll ask again; if you think any early franchise's accomplishments approach that of Ottawa's, let's hear what you have to say.

More on Canada geo-stubs

[edit]
For your extensive work in articles pertaining to Canada, I, Grutness, hereby award you The Barnstar of National Merit. Wear it with pride! 8 July 2005 09:36 (UTC)

Hi again - I've just done a recount of the Canada geo-stubs to see whether any more provinces are likely to need their own, and I was stunned by the number that you seem to have either started or edited. I had a look at your contrib list, too, and saw that geography items were only the tip of the iceberg. So... I feel you deserve some recognition for these efforts! Grutness...wha?

Heh! Better that type of work that trying to fix messes like vandalism! BTW, it looks quite likely there will be a couple more separate province stubs (probably Newfoundland/Labrador and one for the Maritimes). Also, looking through your recent contribs helped me add a link to an article I've got on my watchlist - my surname's Dignan, and there's an article on the Irish Clan that that name comes from (which includes people like Noel Duignan). Surrey North

[edit]

I couldn't help but notice the new election table added for Surrey North. Is this a standard table that is to go on every riding? The tables I have been usng for the BC federal & provincial ridings was based on the 2005 British election boxes modified for more useful info (still haven't figured out how to put # of Electors in there though). These ones are small, easily digestible, and full of info. I looked for some templates before I started but only found the British ones and some standard boxes. I discussed it with you (see above) and DoubleBlue. I've saw the new tables elsewhere but was under the impression that those kind of tables would be kept in the general election pages. Can you please elaborate on your plans or intentions?maclean25 02:45, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Hmm, I agree. I find those tables very difficult to read and they certainly duplicate the more complete information already found on the article. DoubleBlue (Talk) 04:29, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Riding", "Critic", "Reeve"

[edit]

I have been updating some links on some of your Canadian politician pages. I have seen the terms "riding", "critic", and "reeve" used. If "critic" has a specific meaning in Canadian politics, it might be a good idea to add a page for this, or add it onto the current Critic page. Also, I had to look up the words "riding" and "reeve" in reference to Canadian and British politics. I'm sure most English speakers outside Canada and the U.K. (i.e., people in the U.S.A.) probably have no idea what these words mean. It would be helpful to make this an internal link to Riding and Reeve if you do any more of these pages on Canadian politicians. I have been adding such links where the terms are found on a page. Just wondering, have you been to Lake Nipissing recently? Skeeter08865

  • I just got back on Saturday. It's really a beautiful place. I just don't know there aren't any trout stocking associations putting rainbow trout in the lake. Seems to me it would be an added benefit to all the sports anglers and lodge owners. Skeeter08865
  • Hey! I uploaded some pictures of the lake. Someone is threatening to remove them. If you have a second can you do whatever and put "public domain" on those pictures. Or whatever the hell they want. For some reason I cannot modify them anymore. I am on my work PC now. Skeeter08865

A couple more geo-stubs

[edit]

Hi again - I've added this to the Canadian noticeboard, but since you're such a prolific creator of stubs I thought I'd mention it here too - there's been two more stub templates created: {{maritimes-geo-stub}} for PEI, NS and NB, and {{Newfoundland-geo-stub}} (with a redirect at {{Labrador-geo-stub}}, to hopefully fend off any complaints!) for N&L geography stubs. Grutness...wha? 09:49, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote:I thank you a lot for your hard work with the stubs. Next time you go through them, do you think you could look out for communities that don't have a province following their names? (i.e. if the article is at Kenora, move to Kenora, Ontario) I've had a look at the lists before, but you never know if I missed a few. If you have any questions in that regard, please let me know. (Use discretion, Bytown does not belong at Bytown, Ontario for historical purposes). Well - there's no problem with the work I've been doing. As to the page moves, I'll try to move what ones I notice, but I really only look for new articles in the stub categories (I already have a list of what was there from each province last time I tallied up, so I don't re-check them). Is it standard practice for all Canadian settlements to be followed by the province name, then? (I ask because I'm most familiar with new Zealand ones, and there "New Zealand" is only added if disambiguation is needed). Grutness...wha? 02:13, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Earl I was just wondering, How do you get the Canadian flag in front of your name???

MRC of acton, term "municipalities"

[edit]

regarding Acton Regional County Municipality, Quebec

When I referred to the "official" web site, I was referring to http://www.mrcacton.qc.ca/Municipalites.htm (in more than one spot), which calls the members of the MRC "municipalities". I understand that is now the legal division/jurisdiction, *after* the reorganization done in the 1990s. Within those municipalities there might be a "town" or a "village". But I thought those had no legal signficance.

If you go to one example, http://st-theodore.com/, you'll see what you call a parish, calls itself a municipality. Anyway, I am confused as to why you oppose you the terms of the MRC and municipalities themselves.

Please follow the link to Acton Vale, Quebec. Then, click on the link to Saint Theodore. As you can see your reversion of my last edit, has caused the link to not worky any more. This may be related to the accented characters. --rob 09:03, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

update: I do see the mistake I made on the article, but in your revert of my error, you brought back a pre-existing bad-link, I'm not going to fix it myself, since there's no point in changing anything since you're just going to undo 2 seconds later, without talking first, so please fix your fix, thanks. --rob 09:13, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Roxton Canton, Quebec

[edit]

Please visit the official web site of the MRC of Acton, and see the map labels this exactly "Roxton Canton". It is not "Roxton (Canton)". There is no basis for calling it just "Roxton".

Take a look at Media:Municipal Regional County of Acton Map.gif Since this is used in the MRC article, you now have a situation where we're showing an official map, that disagrees with wikipedia's name. There's no community that's just "Roxton". It's Roxton Canton. --rob 05:06, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Check out the only *official* source, here:

These two web sites are the *only* authority. That's it.

Official MRC map showing "Roxton Canton".

OK, I have cited more than one official source. That is wikipedia policy. I intend to ensure this change is done. You had no basis whatsoever for reverting it. The fact you did two moves within minutes of each other, shows you did not know what the wikipedia rules require (how could both moves be "required"). You are not the authority on "Roxton Canton". The authority is "Roxton Canton", and the MRC of Acton. That's it. They set the rules. --rob 05:30, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Forgetting about Roxton for a moment. Since, you're intent on doing mass reverts, please consider checking what other changes have been done. For instance, I previously fixed a huge break in text caused by "stacked images", by moving a map to a lower section. You undid this. I also put an English name, in place of a French one, for a web site (You should use English or English/French, but not French-only titles). You undid this. If you look next to the "Save page" button, you'll notice a "Show preview" and a "Show changes". This isn't the first time you've caused "collateral" damage. --rob 06:43, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yukon map

[edit]

First, I want to thank you for the great Yukon map, which was just perfect for the Geography of the Yukon article I wrote. But I did notice two typos in the southwestern corner: Katherine Lake should be Kathleen Lake and Dezadeash Lake is spelled that way, not Dezedeash. Hi, Andrew. Might I ask why you reverted my change in the China template? You used the rollback button to revert it, and thus your edit summary contains no information regarding your reasons. Ok then, sorry about the mess with the template. I'm using Internet Explorer right now. It's still completely messed up, with the text overlapping the images. Coincidentally enough, this afternoon the User pt template which I have on my own user page started showing completely out of wack, but when I visit the template's page, it shows up fine. electoral district/federal electoral district

There are a number of federal ridings in Quebec that share their names with provincial ridings, including Mount Royal. That's why I moved it to "Mount Royal (federal electoral district)". See Talk:List of Canadian federal electoral districts. - Farquard 05:35, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

-Ril-

[edit]

I note that you have unblocked Ril. In the reason field of the unblock form, you typed "As per request."

Do you have any further rationale? I do not have the text of -Ril-'s request available to me and therefore have no idea why you felt that unblocking was appropriate.

The Uninvited Co., Inc. 21:27, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Basically the reasons I outline on my talk page.

  • There was no 4th revert in 24 hours.
  • Indeed there wasn't even a 3rd.
  • You (UninvitedCompany) blocked for 72 hours not 24, even though previous blocks of me have been lifted as being inappropriate.
  • You (UninvitedCompany) explicitely state on my talk page that you have violated the letter of the blocking policy
  • You (UninvitedCompany) explicitely state on my talk page that you have an "extremely anti-Islamic" POV, after I accuse you of blocking me because I am opposed to anti-Islamic POV pushing.

Curious

[edit]

Hi, I'm just wondering why you unblocked -Ril- on August 8th in the middle of his 3RR block? You said "per request," but surely there was more reason than that. I'm just wondering because Ril's constant 3RRs and disruption is a major part of his current arbcom case. I'm not really second guessing you, I'd just like to see your justification (sorry if you already gave it somewhere, but I couldn't find it). Dmcdevit·t 22:19, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

Is that it? You didn't contact the blocking administrator? Or research the case? Or even look at his talk page where no less than seven other administrators he had emailed had already declined to unblock? That sounds a little irresponsible to me, I had expected more reason than that, you know. Dmcdevit·t 01:48, August 16, 2005 (UTC)
The reason that I'm concerned is that you have unblocked users in the midst of a 3RR before. And you even unblocked Plautus Satire after the Arbcom banned him for 2 years. You really have to look into these more before unblocking. Unless it's some AOL user accidentally hit by an IP block, it needs to be something very bad before you reverse some other trusted admin's block. There's simply no reason to trust someone that was blocked for 3RR, vandalism, or some other bad faith. Everyone thinks it was unfair when they are blocked. You should at the very least let the community know on WP:ANI. Dmcdevit·t 08:00, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hockey logos

Wow, you did a great job at adding the "right" logos to the teams, especially for the NHL seasons. I was wondering if you had a logo for the New York Americans. Also, soon I will be rewriting and expanding the New York Americans article and it would be a great help if you were to toss in a logo there too. Thanks! Masterhatch 18 August 2005

Sorry to bother you again, but could you also get a logo for the 1932-33 NHL season for the Montreal Maroons and the 1981-82 NHL season for the Colorado Rockies (NHL)? Thanks! Masterhatch 18 August 2005

I think that "provincial electoral constituency" is the more accurate name. Manitoba uses "ridings" to denote federal seats, and "constituencies" to denote provincial seats; it makes sense to use "constituency" in the page title, as such.

Also, I've just finished creating a "provincial electoral constituency" category for Manitoba to replace the "provincial electoral district" category. CJCurrie 01:23, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just a quick addendum:

When I first created the Manitoba constituency pages, I wasn't clear on the terminology of "constituencies" vs "ridings" -- for that reason, I chose "district" as a neutral, descriptive term.

I've been (gradually) correcting the pages over the last few weeks. CJCurrie 01:47, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Whitby Dunlops

[edit]

Thanks for the link to the OHL arena guide. If you read it closely, though, it doesn't say the junior Oshawa Generals became the senior Whitby Dunlops. It just has a stray sentence about the Dunlops. Any reference about Bobby Orr will tell you he played for the Oshawa Generals, not for the Dunlops. He couldn't have played for the Dunlops because they were a senior team, which is how they won the world championship, which is restricted to senior teams (no junior championships in those days).

I must admit the sources which would definitively settle this are either incomplete or missing. Here's a notion, though – I'll go look up some old sports sections at the reference library. John FitzGerald 22:04, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Got your note. I find generally that sources about the history of Canadian popular culture are hard to find. It's not all that easy to find sources about Canadian hitory generally. I'll be looking for evidence soon, though. Somewhere I have a photo of the Dunlops that I got at the Sportsmens' Show in London, Ontario in 1959 or so. Now there's a team that won a word championship, and there is next to nothing about it online. John FitzGerald 16:23, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons in afd vote

[edit]

Re: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Toronto-area roads

Hi, I know you've been here longer than me, and are an admin, and probably know the rules better than I do, but I still thought I should mention that votes in AFD are often (not always) thrown out by some (not all) closers, when the voter doesn't specify a reason (any reason, even a two-letter abbreviation or a "per above" is good enough for the vote to count). Sometimes, people are surprised when an article is deleted, when most people vote to keep. It even happens when others already gave a reason, and somebody figures, there's no need to be redundant. Anyway, if you already heard of this, than just ignore this message. --rob 10:50, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Simpson tree.PNG didn't have the pd-self template despite it being in the upload summary (odd, that, I thought the upload summary was automatically put in the image description pag?), so I've added it. Municipal elections page

[edit]

I checked it out per your MSN message. Not sure if you were looking for anything in particular but all-in-all I thought it was pretty good. My only question is about this line:

Municipalities include any incorporated census subdivision in Canada, and include cities, towns, incorporated townships, villages, incorporated hamlets, Quebec parishes and municipalities, district municipalities and rural municipalities. They may also include various census divisions, if they have an elected council.

Some of the items in their seem redundant and/or backward. Unless I am mistaken, I don't think any province elects by census division or subdivision but instead, Statistics Canada establishes these divisions based on municipal boundaries. If my above assumption is correct, I would suggest you replace the above with the following (I've also removed what I view as redundant):

Each province has its own nomenclature for muncipalities and some have local elections for unincoproated areas which are not technically municipalities. These entities can be called cities, towns, villages, townships, hamlets, parishes and, simply, municipalities, district municipalities or rural municipalities. Many of these may be used by Statistics Canada as the basis for census divisions or census subdivisions.

Oshawa Truckmen

The team which moved to Whitby to become the Dunlops was the Oshawa Truckmen, a senior team. Hey, I saw your edits to the Alta Vista article, and i just wanted to ask you some questions. If Heron road is added to the boundries, then that excludes a trigle of land where Ridgemont high and Charles H. Hulse schools are... this map from the city's site, shows alta vista (#1) as including this triangle, as does this one from the OCDSB, showing the schools. do you think this triangle should be excluded from the neighbourhood and these schools deleted from the list? Also, how does the list of sub-hoods compare to the ones i put originally.... is there a 'core' alta vista area like the one i defined... what about canterbury? this is where i got some of my info from. let me know what you think. --Someones life 21:18, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, i removed the two schools from the list, added canterbury to the sub-hoods, and re-worded a bit. i didnt think that the sub-hoods needed to all be links, since none of them have articles, and probably arent significant enough to warrant them... but if you really think they should, then go ahead and put them back. Maps and colours

[edit]

Hello,

I'd like to compliment you on the election maps. You obviously have put a great deal of time into them. I'm therefore hesitant to make any kind of criticism. However, I have to say that I cannot tell the difference between the NDP colours and the Liberal colours on your maps. Part of this is because I am colourblind, but another user told me that he can't tell the difference between the red and orange either.

Again, while I hate to ask you to do any more work, I'd like to make the following recommendations regarding the maps:

  • Add another kind of visual clue to the maps, such as a circle in the ridings that went NDP in the British Columbia provincial election. Your use of supplemental information on the federal map makes it much easier to understand.
  • Go for clarity over amount of information and use fewer shades.
  • Choose from a palette of blue, red, yellow, black and white. Other combinations can cause problems for colourblind people. (Colourblind people can have trouble telling red from green or orange; blue from purple; yellow from orange; and green from brown.)

Please keep up the good work on the maps and articles.

Mwalcoff 00:57, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's the tradeoff between amount of information and the simplicity of it. No matter how hard I look at the BC map, I can't tell apart all the colours. I think the three suggestions I made above would be helpful in making the map easier to read, but of course it's up to you. -- Mwalcoff 00:32, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need to feel bad. You have done a fantastic job with the maps. The only problem is that you made them a bit too informative. I can try to play around with one of them. Thanks -- Mwalcoff 00:45, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New map

Popular vote map by riding

OK, I've uploaded an edited version of the map under the filename bc2005-3.png I reduced the number of colours and changed the oranges to blue-green. If you use this map, you lose some of the detail but gain in ease of use. There's a possibility that some people more colourblind than I am might still have trouble differentiating between the light red and the light blue-green. I tried using yellow for the NDP, but light yellow looks really ugly. -- Mwalcoff 01:38, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done. If I get time, I can try doing the same to the maps for other provinces with NDP ridings. Thanks for understanding -- Mwalcoff 02:34, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
The image you uploaded, Image:Bobchiarelli.jpg, has no source information. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. Woodroffe Avenue

[edit]

Just a heads-up: as this article involves re-created deleted material I took it to Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion. While there, please read the "Purpose" box for future reference. Also, as you are obviously an advocate of road-related articles, please read the arguments against such articles (in related VfD) and help allay our fears while engaging in future editing. Specifically, my concern is the creation of thousand of uncoordinated, poorly-written, off-topic (what does a road mean to you?) articles. --maclean25 07:48, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I feel that as a party to the deletion debate on this page, you should not have repeatedly un-deleted the page yourself. I have re-deleted and protected the page pending the outcome of the VfU discussion. I have also posted information about the article to the Administrator's notice board. Please see the discussion there. Best regards, Ëvilphoenix Burn! 18:55, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering what exactly happened to this article? What was the copyright vio that this page was turfed for? --Cloveious 04:56, 20 October 2005 (UTC) Wierd, I am adding the page for undeletion, --Cloveious 05:29, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Electoral district naming convention

[edit]

Hey Earl, I wonder what your opinion is when there is a federal and provincial electoral district of the same name in two different provinces? The issue cropped up on Queen's (electoral district)... there was Queens (Nova Scotia electoral district) which was the page of a federal district but there was also Queens (provincial electoral district) which was a provincial district in Nova Scotia but there was also a provincial district of the same name in New Brunswick. To sort out this confusion, I created the following:

User:Fawcett5 thinks that this is a violation of naming convention, however in my view it is the only way to disambiguate when you have a district of the same name in different provinces at different levels of government.

What are your thoughts? - Jord 16:32, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well in my view having two electoral districts in New Brunswick, for the sake of this example, one might readily expect to find both the provincial or federal one at Riding (New Brunswick electoral district) is not the point of disabiguatory brackets to make something's context as clear as possible when multiple articles exist? For instance, if there are two people named Bob Best, then you have Bob Best (actor) and Bob Best (poltician) but if you have two people named Jane Smith who are both politicians then you have Jane Smith (Ontario politician) and Jane Smith (New Brunswick poltician) and so on. In my mind if I go to Queens (Nova Scotia electoral district) I expect to find the provincial district, because it still exists and is in use today, as opposed to the federal district which was abolished many years ago. Hence why it would be far easier and less confusing to name them Queens (Nova Scotia federal electoral district) and Queens (Nova Scotia provincial electoral district). Am I making any sense here? - Jord 12:54, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to be stepping on turf and ruffling feathers -- your last comment left me with the impression that that is how you felt. I would be more than happy to go through and make the necessary changes. Perhaps I am biting off more than I can chew but as I see it, I just can't imagine that there are too many examples of there being the same name for a district in two provinces on two levels of government. - Jord 04:24, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Would you like to get the project fired up or shall I? - Jord 05:10, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put up a skelton. - Jord 05:15, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Electoral Districts

[edit]

Looks like you and Jord beat me to the punch. I have been planning and designing for a couple weeks a brain storming session on federal electoral district articles (I'm usually not in any particular hurry). My plan is layed out here: User:Maclean25/Federal Electoral Districts. Please review it and let me know what you think, especially about the format (ie. will it achieve its intended goal?). It may be complimentary to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada you created. However, it is intended for only federal ridings because I believe provincial debate would get bogged down in regional issues. As an admin, perhaps you could move it from my userspace to the project(?)space. And about that Woodroffe affair (heh), I totally did not forsee that circus coming, and I did not intend to get you in any trouble, my beef was with the article, no hard feelings, eh? --maclean25 08:00, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

GloucesterCareltonOttawaOrleansCarletonGloucester

[edit]

This is how I understand it from here: the riding was created as Gloucester-Carelton in 1996, renamed as Carelton-Gloucester in 1997, and then as Ottawa-Orleans in 2000. This why I had the funny piping in the link. I intend to start a campaign to rename it one last time to "Bernice" and leave it at that. Ground Zero | t 22:51, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

map colours

[edit]

I am not sure which specific maps you speak of, I did change all the election maps, however all I changed was the PC colour because I thought PC's should be lighter. I didn't change the NDP colours. MS123

Psssst, Earl...an em-dash in the name of a town? Canada only uses em-dashes in the names of electoral districts, remember? Not towns and cities. It is Saint-Lin-Laurentides with a plain old run-of-the-mill hyphen, because it's not a riding, it's a plain old run-of-the-mill municipality.

Oh, by the way, I also restored Narcisse-Fortunat Belleau, although I've stripped it back down to a stub. If you want to expand it back up to snuff, feel free...just don't cut and paste text directly from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Bearcat 05:40, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A redirect is probably fine — but from what I can tell, there seems to be a disconnect between what the MAMR uses and what the town itself uses on its own website. And I'd be much more inclined to conform to the town's own usage, personally. But we could always e-mail somebody at the MAMR to confirm what's really correct, if you'd prefer.
As for M. Belleau, all I know is that the discussion that tipped me off to the problem in the first place came from your talk page (*grin*) Bearcat 05:55, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I notice you often reference the "Quebec federation of municipalities" and give http://www.mamr.gouv.qc.ca/cgi-bin/repert1.pl as the link. I don't speak French, but I don't think those two things are the same. The link you gave, is to Regional/Municipal Affairs for the Quebec provincial government, which is obviously the appropriate authority to cite when discussing municipalities. But the organization "Quebec federation of municipalities" is actually http://www.fqm.ca/index.asp, and seems to be a voluntary assocation of members, with no special powers or authority over anything (and appears to partner with the Regional/Municipal Affairs for Quebec, but not be the same thing). --rob 06:44, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you left a comment (weak keep) in Alan Shefman's page that is up for deletion. Although Vaughan is one of the fastest growing cities in Candada it is still far from being a big city. Vaughan is less than half the size of Mississaga and there councillors don't even meet the critiria to be posted. The mayor of Vaughan doesn't even have an article and this is even questionable if he deserves an article. Eyeonvaughan 5 November 2005

Electoral Areas

[edit]

I noticed you created an article for a BC Electoral Area at Peace River C, British Columbia. I, too, have been thinking about how to best structure the regional district articles and how to deal with the electoral areas. However, instead of separate articles for each I'm leaning towards including the E.A.s into the parent regional district article like in Fraser Valley Regional District, British Columbia at least until I see there is enough info to split it off. But there really isn't much difference between them, they are like 'wards' in Ottawa or Toronto (but rural). Their borders exist solely for political reasons (to cover enough people to justify one director on the Board) and don't follow any historical or natural feature boundary. So, I'm not sure how to expand an E.A. article beyond the stub you create with census data and a little geography (since it is a geographic area). If you think a separate article is best, how do you plan to fill it? Perhaps create a complete test article to see if justifies an separate article or can be better presented in the R.D. article. --maclean25 02:52, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is not an obvious topic to automatically create an article on. Why do census subdivisions automatically get articles? From my point of view this census data belongs in the regional district article. The regional district is just a federation of these electoral areas (plus member municipalities) so they must be described in that article. The question will be what further info, beyond that in the R.D. article can be said about the electoral area. That is why I believe the R.D. articles should be created first and expanded. If the E.A. require separate articles, then so be it. Or is it that you're saying the proposed articles will be on census subdivisions unrelated to regional districts, and it just so happens that they share a border with the electoral areas? --maclean25 04:07, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have recently come across a lot of information that I can add to these (for the Peace region anyways).--maclean25 04:17, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ontario map origins?

[edit]

I'm trying to track down the source image that was used to create (among other things) Goldhorse.PNG. Bearcat referred me to you, stating it's GFDL. I'd appreciate it if you could refer me to the original map and inform me as to the license. Thanks in advance. IceKarma 10:44, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Quebec municipal elections

[edit]

Why did you erase my additions???Souris2005 17:04, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add more, but there's too much information to add in a single page. I'm not sure what to do: 1. Try to keep it on the same page (1000 municipalities, with at least 7 contenders for each, it would give about at least 7000 names) 2. Make pages for each region (it would give something like that: Quebec municipal elections, 2005, results in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. What do you think? Or maybe a page for each election?Souris2005 13:09, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Errors

[edit]

Thanks for checking my work. Translating the official descriptions of riding boundaries from Electionscanadese to English makes my head swim, and I am prone to getting things a bit mucked up. Regards, Ground Zero | t 23:20, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I know Eastern Ontario ridings well enough, having made maps going back to 1974 for them. -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:26, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

So, do you know what's going on in Ottawa South? The article says that Barry Turner got the nomination, and then it was overturned, and now Allan Cutler is going to seek the nomination. Why did Barry get turfed? Inquiring minds want to know. Ground Zero | t 18:39, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know much more than you. In a google search, I found this article: http://ottsun.canoe.ca/News/Columnists/MacAdam_Pat/2005/10/15/1264118.html -- Earl Andrew - talk 18:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

MPs in cities

[edit]

I removed the list of MPs from Dawson Creek, British Columbia. The article is already past the "suggested size" of 30Kb and I don't think that MPs had that much impact on the city. Also, many of them governed before the city was even incorporated. Perhaps a list of mayors would be more appropriate for cities. I appreciate the thought, it would definately be in a subpage dealing strictly with Government and politics of Dawson Creek. This may happen as there is a lot more I want to add, too. --maclean25 04:17, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Might I suggest that in lieu of that list on that page the same list should be (if it isn't already) on the relevant riding page (Prince George North, I think - or Peace River Something?). Sorta a no-brainer.Skookum1 05:14, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The list was for every MP for Dawson Creek, which was for multiple ridings. -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:22, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • I did not mean any offense by the removal. But I have got the format just how I like it so any non-minor additions make me nervous, especially since it is in the midst of the FAC process (a brand new section suddenly appearing made me jump). With the city's article I am trying to be as specific as possible (without getting bogged down in detail) and a list of MPs really upped the ante as to what can be included. I tried to maintain a constant level of detail (not getting bogged down, nor being too broad) throughout the article. I saw your edit to the template on the city polls. You have a point that it is too specific, so I added template brackets to the "locale" so that it can be amended in each article to say "city", "village", "neighbourhood", "community" or whathaveyou. --maclean25 05:55, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Historical Electoral District Maps?

[edit]

Hi there Earl Andrew. I've begun work on historical election districts in British Columbia and wondering if I can draw on your cartographic skills; the Elections BC site doesn't have any maps, nor any riding descriptions, which at least the Elections Canada site has for its historical ridings (which also need Wikimaps, btw); first one up is Lillooet (electoral district) and I just made a link to Victoria (British Columbia electoral district) (long name required because of same-name federal riding) and its predecessor Victoria City (British Columbia electoral district), which expired in 1966 and needs the stuff in parantheses because of the Victoria City area of HK. in its wikilink as I don't know if there was a federal riding by that name yet. Just asking; not sure where you got yours from or if you hand-drew the boundaries, and gather it can be a lot of work. Also wanted to turn you onto a resource if you don't know about it already: http://maps.gov.bc.ca BC Govt Maps Online Skookum1 05:14, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Info on BC map resources on my TalkPage

[edit]

Wrote up some stuff last night before bed and meant to leave a quick reference over to it there; I didn't want to clutter up your own talk page with my georamblings; links to map resources there and here are two links to rough drafts I made of the Coast Chilcotin boundary this morning, using the Elections Can site as a guideline: http://www.cayoosh.net/CoastChilcotinBoundaryPts.jpg and http://www.cayoosh.net/CoastChilcotinBoundaryRough.jpg.

The boundary points are the only ones that I can identify; the others listed on the EC page are the eastern and southeastern edge of the Lillooet Land District, so I dotted the boundary in that area as I'm not sure where it is; only a rough idea; can't access the L.D. display on Basemap/LDRWC for some reason; will have to refer to paper maps or other sources; some of those semi-horizontal lines on the solid boundary are supposed to be horizontal (lines of latitude). Eyeballed the north boundary of North and West Vancouvers, and some of the smaller islands I didn't take the time to hunt down but they're unpopulated, more or less, and the channel information gave me a good idea where to go. Ocean boundary on west is indeterminate but I did my best; fairly simple north from there, although there's a jiggle that doesn't quite show in my sloppy work; again unpopulated, probably, so no biggie. Eastern boundary is an issue for me, as it will determine which towns are in/out of the riding.Skookum1 18:25, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Coast Chilcotin map project

[edit]

Sorry, re your message; I've got the "too much information" disease and was just trying to be thorough about the online resources and my background in prominence work. Immediate project is just to make a better-looking map than my rough draft for the Coast Chilcotin boundary, which is the second link below:

Can't be certain about that eastern boundary because I have to find a map with the Lillooet Land District boundaries on it; I have a rough idea but for now what's on the map will do. Just do that one; only federal boundaries are in the offing; I'll have a look and see what defunct federal electoral districts in BC are already in Wikipedia, then generate some other roughed-out boundary maps to work from.Skookum1 02:43, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
