Brachypelma smithi and Brachypelma hamorii

[edit]

Firstly, sorry about my edit summary when I undid some of your edits at Brachypelma smithi ("Additions are not correct"); one is not quite correct, the other may be, but needs a source.

The bit that needs a source is "most specimens in captivity are in fact B. hamorii". There are some tarantulas-as-pets websites that either say this or imply it, and I suspect that it's true, but I can't find what Wikipedia regards as a reliable source to support this statement, which is a pity. If you can, then it would be good to include this information. One thing it affects is the identity of the images of captive specimens in Wikimedia Commons labelled "Brachypelma smithi".

The bit that's not correct is "the original species listed under B. smithi has been moved to B. hamorii". Nothing has been "moved". B. smithi remains the original species collected in Guerrero and described in 1897. What has happened is that a population in a different area of Mexico, south of Guerrero, that was previously thought also to be B. smithi, is now regarded by some sources (crucially including the World Spider Catalog) as a different species, B. hamorii. If this distinction is rejected, then the correct name for both populations is B. smithi, as this is the senior synonym. Peter coxhead (talk) 18:44, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
