Adoption
[edit]I have been looking for someone who I can Adopt. I think that you could be the right person. If you agree, post a message on my User talk:Mahanga. MahangaTalk 18:02, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- Great! Let me know if you have any questions. I noticed you were editing your monobook.js. Were you having problems or were you just testing it out? If you're interested, I encourage you to check out some of these links and see if they pique your interest. Cheers! MahangaTalk 21:18, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
New user tasks
- Copyedit articles
- Join a Wikiproject
- Add wikilinks to words
- Revert vandalism
- Write an article
- Sort stubs
- Probably the first question I should've asked, but how comfortable are you in editing Wikipedia? MahangaTalk 01:31, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Hello thanks for your suggestion that I get an adopter - but I do not even know how to accomplish that 16:44, 19 April 2007 (UTC)James Ensor
user warnings
[edit]First of all, I want to thank you for directing User:James Ensor to the adoption program. Many new users don't know that it exists, so this lets us help them very much.
If you wish to leave a note or a warning on a user because he vandalized a page or whatnot, you can leave a handwritten note on their page. However, most experienced Wikipedians use template messages. Many templates for different purposes exist here. There are some that create infoboxes, welcome new users, warn users, create a timeline, and so on. The text of the template will be substituted for something else.
For example, take the "citation needed" template. If you type {{cn}}
into an article and hit save, it will expand to form
this -> [citation needed]. You can link to a template like this: Template:Citation needed or the easier way, {{cn}}.
If you want to leave a user a message for vandalism, you'd go to Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace and copy the appropriate template, such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} for the first warning and {{subst:uw-vandalism2}} for 2nd warning.
You can test these templates out in the WP:SANDBOX. Please let me know if you need more clarification or examples. MahangaTalk 22:10, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
By the way, certain avenues exist if you have trouble handling certain vandalism. Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism (for obvious, persistent vandalism) and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents (for more controversial vandalism).
monobook
[edit]Your changes monobook.js didn't do anything at all? "After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Firefox/Mozilla/Safari: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), Internet Explorer: press Ctrl-F5, Opera/Konqueror: press F5." I added a script. On your sidebar (toolbox) to the left,
There should now be five new items in your toolbox:
- Filter recent changes, a link to User:Lupin/Filter recent changes,
- All recent changes, a link to User:Lupin/All recent changes,
- Recent IP edits, a link to User:Lupin/Recent IP edits and
- Monitor my watchlist, a link to User:Lupin/Monitor my watchlist.
- Live spellcheck, a link to User:Lupin/Live spellcheck.
Do any of those links work? What browser are you using? Internet Explorer?
I also added a welcoming tab at the top right of the page, that will insert the welcome template on a user's talk page. Note, it only appears when you hit edit on a user's talk page. Try it on my talk page. Did that help? I sometimes have trouble with my monobook tool. Sometimes, the userscript only works in Firefox, sometimes it conflicts with another userscript. Are there any specific tools you're interested in? In combating vandalism? I'd recommend WP:TWINKLE, but I think that only works in Firefox. MahangaTalk 22:30, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
WP:TWINKLE only works on Firefox or Opera web browsers. It probably won't work if you're using Internet Explorer. Note, you don't need to use twinkle for revert functionality. Help:Reverting#Undo shows you. Let me know if you can't get either of those to work. MahangaTalk 23:40, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- Twinkle is wonky? What exactly is wrong? I'm not sure I understand your second question. You want a tab that inserts a {{prod}} to an article? TWINKLE already does that. One thing I found out though is if you increase the font size or if you have too many tabs, then it doesn't show up. I removed the welcome template, since it wasn't working anyway. The prod should show up now. MahangaTalk 23:26, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Sartell Middle School
[edit]This is how Sartell Middle School measures up to other articles on Wikipedia: Category:Minnesota school stubs.--Daveswagon 01:58, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I was following along with the precedent of "Category:Middle schools in Minnesota".--Daveswagon 02:09, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I could, but I'm not sure how the infoboxes would work out then.--Daveswagon 02:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, perhaps I'll do that. Thanks for the input.--Daveswagon 02:25, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I could, but I'm not sure how the infoboxes would work out then.--Daveswagon 02:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
The image licence is a bit confusing. You say that it has been released for use only on Wikipedia, yet also say that you have released it under the GNU Free Documentation Licence. These are incompatible statements. Could you please review the GFDL and clarify under what terms this image has been released? Thanks! Sancho (Review me) 20:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, I can change it for you. I just wanted to check what your intention was though... did you want it released under the GNU Free Documentation License? Are you able to release it under the GFDL?... it appears that the image is a modification of another image — you might not be able to release modifications to that original image under the GFDL. Basically the contradiction in your original licensing was that under the GFDL, users are free to use and modify the image and display it in places other than Wikipedia as long as they continue to license the downstream uses under the GFDL as well. I don't know if this is what you meant to allow. Sancho (Review me) 22:15, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Hello again, have you given any thought to what you mean to do with the Image:Flight Corporal RCACS.png image? I can fix the tag if you're able to answer the following three questions:
- What was the license on the image you modified to create this image?
- Do you intend to allow use of this image inside and outside of Wikipedia under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation Licence?
- If not, what restrictions do you want to place on the use of this image?
- Please let me know. Thanks, Sancho 15:31, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to think about this and even propose a template that could be used. I think we should use the template you suggest, but also follow closely the discussion at [[1]] to see if something better/more correct comes out of the discussion. Sancho 02:05, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

fair use image
[edit]Hi, Dreamafter. How's everything going? I've been a little busy in my personal life, but you can still leave a comment or send me an email and I'll reply promptly. I wanted to let you know that fair use images, such as the Internet Explorer 7 image, are not allowed in user space. The policy is at Wikipedia:Non-free content. The calculator image, since it's free, is allowed anywhere. Let me know if you have questions. Bye for now. MahangaTalk 20:57, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcome!
[edit]Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, offline publication, article improvement contests, and other tasks.
- We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a variety of guidelines for article structure and content, template use, categorization, and other issues that you may find useful.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Carom 02:40, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Flight corporal image
[edit]Hi,
I've thought about the flight corporal image for a while, but I'm still not sure that we can edit a military insignia and then use it in Wikipedia. What do you think about asking for some guidance from somebody more experienced... there's a copyright problems noticeboard that we could post the question at.. Let me know. Or you could just post the question. Sancho 21:44, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Administratorship nomination
[edit]Hey, Matt. It is with a heavy heart that I must decline your nomination for my administratorship. I just don't think I deserve it yet. Also, I'd feel kind of guilty if I became an admin after being nominated by someone I know personally; that's kind of unfair. It's also known as nepotism. VolatileChemical 02:24, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Your VandalProof Application
[edit]Dear Dreamafter,
Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that at this time you do not meet the minimum requirement of 250 edits to mainspace articles (see under main here). Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. Daniel 04:50, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Copyrigh problems with Image:Mflo band.jpg
[edit]An image that you uploaded, Image:Mflo band.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it was uploaded with a false GFDL tag. The source page clearly states that the image there is provided under the "fair use" clause. It is not a freely available image. Please drop by at Wikipedia:Image use policy to see what kind of licenses we allow images to be hosted on Wikimedia servers. Thank you. 朝彦 (Asahiko) 12:03, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Some information is here Wikipedia:Userboxes. Create a new subpage in your userspace and fill that page with the code for the userbox that you want. See my sample userbox here. User:Mahanga/Sandbox. To "apply" it, you just reference it using the template form. {{User:Mahanga/Sandbox}}.

License tagging for Image:Anzio-War-Cemetery.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Anzio-War-Cemetery.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 14:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:Level2RCACS.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Level2RCACS.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Wikiproject Artemis Fowl/Vote and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:Wikiproject Artemis Fowl/Vote during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Dreamy 23:44, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Non-free images outside of main article space
[edit]I have removed the non-free images from {{User Artemis Fowl-LCoord}} {{User Artemis Fowl-Coord}} and {{ArtemisFowl-stub}}, since they contained the non-free images JacketArtemisLRG.jpg and 7thdwarf.JPG. Hi! Thanks for the interest in my request for adminship. I hope you don't feel I thought your question was un-important. I was thinking quite a bit about it, but there were some strange network problems last yesterday evening and I wasn't able to answer it during the open period. I would like to still answer your question though. If a group of editors is standing together in their disagreement with me, the first thing I would do is assume that I actually may be wrong and review the relevant policy. I'm pretty sure a situation like you asked about would come down to a root cause of a disagreement about interpretation of policy, in which case, I may ask for comment at the relevant policy discussion page. Against a united front of opposition, I would feel much happier taking action with at least one other experienced editor or administrator agreeing with me. In the extreme case, there is always the Wikipedia:Requests for comment, Wikipedia:Third opinion, and the rest of Wikipedia:Resolving disputes. This was one of the more thought provoking questions I was asked during the RfA. Sancho 17:33, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Unusual Adoption Request
[edit]Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.
Thank you!

Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
[edit]SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.

Artemis Fowl Template
[edit]Userbox templates cannot contain the images of copyrighted works such as the cover of the Artemis Fowl books. I have made a new symbol temporary for the member of the Artemis Fowl project userbox. License tagging for Image:Artemis FowlUBX.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Artemis FowlUBX.png.
22:06, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Featured article nomination
[edit]Thanks for the push forward on the Royal Canadian Air Cadets article. I haven't been actively improving it lately. I did know that some licensing issues still had to be sorted out, but hadn't had the time to look at the crown copyright issues yet. I don't think the article is far off from FA status, but it will take more than a little bit of work. I've never worked on an article while it was going through an FA promotion before. Maybe I'll take a look at one of the others going through nomination to get a feel for what would need to be done with this article. We got some good feedback to start with due to your nomination of the article anyway. Sancho 05:04, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
Image copyright status
[edit]Just to help you improve the Royal Canadian Air Cadets article, all images in that article of badges and insignia should be tagged with the following copyright template: {{Non-free Crown copyright}} (instead of the current Military-insignia and GFDL templates) and include a fair use rationale. Personally, I could tag them for the right copyright, but I cannot include a fair use rationale for you (I don't know your rationale for using them). As images have a chance of getting deleted without a proper license, I suggest you chance the license for these images. If you have any questions, let me know. --Cpt. Morgan (Reinoutr) 11:35, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit]This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Level2RCACS.jpg. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:05, 25 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Thank you. 145.97.39.143 23:05, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit][7]. Hope you don't mind. —Wknight94 (talk) 22:57, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- I won't mind if you tell me what is the difference now. Dreamy \*/!$! 23:12, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- Woops, I didn't fix it with that edit anyway. This was the edit I meant to make. When you have "{{db|" + whatever in your monobook.js, the system picks up the {{db|...}} and thinks you want to delete the file! It's odd behavior for the software IMHO but that is the way it works. The easy fix is to separate the {{ from the db. —Wknight94 (talk) 23:22, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

AN3
[edit]Your two recent reports were so malformed as to be bordering on bad faith. The revert war ended ar 0230 (ish) UTC and both users were warned after the war had ended. The cases were not raised on AN3 until 13 hours after the war had ended. What on the earth was the point of that? You also included a vandalism revert in one of your reports that can't count towards 3RR. Please read WP:3RR. Thank you. Spartaz Humbug! 21:01, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

I hope somebody can help me solve a problem. I would like to change the title of my page into English.
Right now it's 'Ca sĩ Nhật Sơn', and it has to become 'Nhật Sơn, singer'.
I cannot find a way to do it, probably because I am a new user < 5 days.
Please notice that the name 'Nhật Sơn' must be written in Vietnamese language.
I'm not sure you can see that, if you haven't installed Vietnamese fonts on your computer.
Thanks a lot for your ideas.

Welcoming new users
[edit]Please examine the edits by new users before welcoming them. Those whose edits are suspect should not receive a welcome without a corresponding warning. You recently welcomed a new user who had added spam links to a series of articles. Such actions tend to confuse the status of the user. I would encourage you to review WP:WARN before welcoming more new users. -- wrp103 (Bill Pringle) (Talk) 03:37, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

00:11, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
VP
[edit]- Why are you not an admin?
- I can't log in to VP, what gives?
Dreamy \*/!$! 23:52, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- lol..thanks for asking, great timing actually, because I'm just about to be nominated for adminship! I'd really appreciate your vote when it happens!
- What seems to be the problem logging in? I see you've been approved, but they may not have added you to the list or it may be corrupt. Check out the FAQ, maybe it will help you identify the problem. Dreadstar † 02:02, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, there's this problem that you should be aware of too..nothing to do with logging in, but it's a pain nonetheless..... Dreadstar † 02:05, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Does it automatically find your username when you start VP? It sometimes takes a second or two, but if you've logged into WP with your browser, it finds the credentials. All you have to do is click the "Verify Authorization" button once it autopopulates the username. Dreadstar † 02:08, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think you have to leave the browser up, I don't have to..but I usually have it up while I'm running VP. Try it and tell me what happens when you start VP. Does the login screen do anything at all? Dreadstar † 02:13, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
You've probably already read this, but here's how it should work when logging in. Dreadstar † 02:17, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Nice Username
[edit]Hi! I just came here to say that I think that your username is cool. I like the sound of it. Well, I guess there really isn't any relevance in this post, but I wanted to say how cool I think your username is. Captain panda 03:03, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Section Sizes
[edit]Hello...I just added a section of the Cold War to test its size, but I don't know of any other way to measure the size of a section of an article. Do you know of a way? Thanks! Hires an editor 19:41, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Nope — that's Alison Bechdel in the photograph, dressed in men's clothes, posing for a panel she drew depicting her father. Some of the other drawings of Bruce Bechdel in the book are taken from photographs of him, but Alison Bechdel posed for most of the human figures herself. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 20:32, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well then, why does the image description page say that it is her father? Answer that smart guy! Hardeeharhar!!!
I am smart
And you are dumb
You eat dirt
And suck your thumb
Kidding! Dreamy \*/!$! 20:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Er... it doesn't. It says that she took the photograph, and used it for reference for her father. But I suppose it could be clearer.
- Besides, I'm rubber and you're glue. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 20:39, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
