[edit]Thanks!!! Thats a great start, very much appreciate it!! Well done! Yes I was hoping to start it from French wikipedia but I couldn't fix the documentation. One thing though, any chance you can use the burgundy/brown colors displayed on French wikipedia? Thanks!. Strangely enough I was just telling an ignorant editor that Dutch and German wikipedia actually often have higher articles standards than us. He was dismissing other wikipedias as completely useless and criticised our attempts to translate good content from other wikipedias into English. In fact I created most of the pushpin maps from Dutch wikipedia as you guys keep it real and are well organised, unlike many editors on here who like to discuss pointless trivial stuff an Admin boards! The Bald One White cat 14:40, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
I was thinking in terms of the Buddhist robe colours "Vivid" burgundy and gold. Portal:Box-header/1 the purple-red color one would work well I think. I tried to fix it just now but it didn't work! Could you fix it? Thanks!
Sort of like Template:Tibetan Buddhism but perhaps a little lighter or with white text. Is that possible? The Bald One White cat 14:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. How do you change the text color of the header to white to stand out on the burgundy? The Bald One White cat 15:10, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Perfect! 15:16, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Could we try a pale yellow/pinkish background for the text. If it clashes or looks unsightly then we can change it. The Bald One White cat 15:18, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Wonderful. Thanks again. I was quite fascinated by the Tibetan national football team work you did. Tibet vs Greenland is rather unusual! The Bald One White cat 15:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Very interesting. You may be interested to know that a great deal of the articles you see on Tibet, whether it may be the main articles or most of the related articles and the Dalai Lama general article are written by me and John Hill. Most of the images that exist in articles were put there by myself too. I did start trying to develop the Dalai Lama article to FA but I found I really need books to do so. Good to know how many people see the work we produce The Bald One White cat 15:43, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
It really is good to know isn't it. I just wish more people would actively help with building wikipedia as there are only a small number of people in proportion to its users that actively edit. One thing about the Portal. Is there any chance you can switch the territory conflict map and claims with File:Himalayas-Lhasa10.JPG a Tibetan plateau one. Its just as you know ther eis always controversy over territory and I want the portal to be a place of peace! The Bald One White cat 15:57, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
You are very wise my friend and also extremely aware without a doubt of what goes on here daily. Like the Tibetans we want peace not conflict and disagreement. Take care. P.S if you find another image which is more encyclopedic and attractive feel free to replace it with a more informative one. The Bald One White cat 16:13, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Excellent although that was created to accompany Wp:Tibetan Buddhism before I started Wp:Tibet and it later merged. We still have two tagign templates as the main tibet one goes under Wp:China and obviously sensitive Tibetan Buddhist topics are awkwardly placed under Chinese tagging, particularly historical Buddhist figures. I would though advise making the colors the same as the main Tibet one. I would probably change the selected article to Songsten Gampo or something too The Bald One White cat 12:43, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
How about we reverse the color? E.g gold headers and burgundy writing? The Bald One White cat 12:48, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Any chance though you can switch the list of Dalai Lamas and Panchens to the right and place the select article and select bio on the left like the Portal:Tibet? The Bald One White cat 12:53, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Any chance you could play around with Template:Tibetan Buddhism. At present the red is a little too much. It could do with being made burgundy with gold-yellow or white letting and perhaos a lighter shade of yellow in the background bulk of it. Don't like the block yellow border either it needs darkening I think The Bald One White cat 15:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Reply to Dr. Ernst Blofeld ("The Bald One") and Davin
[edit]Thank you both for your wonderful Christmas messages and, especially, thanks to Ernst for the beautiful photo of the sand mandala. Also, many thanks are due for all the great work you have each been doing on Tibetan subjects - thousands of people will enjoy and benefit from the fruits of your labour!
The portals are great - I will try to add to them when I get some more time.
I have done some work on Yangpachen Monastery - I just hope the quotes I have made from Dowman are not too long - I just don't have the time to try to paraphrase them at the moment. One problem - I have been unable to put a caption under the photo of the Dorjeling ani gompa as it is listed as a "file" and not an "image". I don't know how to correct this - but I think it should have a caption to clarify that it is the nunnery and not the monastery. Can either of you two fix this problem?
I wish you both a happy and joy-filled holiday season and a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year - (if such a state is possible these days)! As we say here in Australia, "Good on the both of you!" It is people like you who make working on the Wikipedia such an enjoyable and worthwhile activity. Cheers, my friends, John Hill (talk) 01:09, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
A new article on the history of Tibetan money
[edit]Hi. I found a new article which needed a lot of clean-up, was uncategorized, had no wikilinks and so on. I have cleaned it up as best as I can, and now it is somewhat presentable. It is: History of money of Tibet. Please could someone else take a look at it? Thanks. I also told the people at WikiProject Numismatics. if you want to reply please drop a note on my talk page. Thanks, Best to you, Tashi Deleg, and a Happy Solstice, Invertzoo (talk) 22:36, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Davin, Thanks so much for weighing in on the article. I only ran into it because a 'bot (User:AlexNewArtBot/Gastropods) mistakenly listed it as a gastropod article (!), on account of the fact that it mentions cowries. I did what I could to make it better. I know a little bit about Tibet, fortunately for me, but nothing at all about this particular topic. Therefore what I could do was only very limited, mostly just cosmetic. If you have not already done so, please make sure I did not do any damage to the meaning during my clean-up efforts. I also wrote an intro, because the article didn't really have one, but again I don't know if I did it justice, I was just winging it. All good wishes and happy holidays, Invertzoo (talk) 21:06, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again Davin, I spend almost all my time on the English Wikipedia working on the Mollusca, in particular the Gastropoda. In reality I only know a very tiny little bit about Tibet, and mostly only from the religious angle. I took a look just now at the Tibet categories and subcategories as you suggested, and my first impression is that in fact I don't know enough to be able to sort them and organize them. I also have had almost no experience working with categories in general. However I will take another look in a few days and see if it strikes me any differently. All good wishes to you, User:Invertzoo Invertzoo (talk) 19:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
I am hoping maybe I can in fact do something with the Tibet categories and subcategories. I am still considering it anyway. I will let you know more firmly fairly soon. Invertzoo (talk) 00:30, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- That would be very great if you succeed. Thank you for informing me that you're still considering how it could be done. Davin (talk) 17:28, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Dalai Lama
[edit]Hi! Sorry about the delay I forgot about your message. Try searching Dalai Lama at google books or on amazon to get some ideas. Sometime we ought to start articles on his books and of course develop the articles to FA. Sorry about what happened to the Tibetan footballer articles. Belated Happy New Year Greetings
[edit]Dear Davin: Apologies for taking so long to get back to you after your very welcome and beautiful New Year greeting to me. It was most appreciated. I meant to reply right away - but have not been well and my good intentions were lost in a haze of codeine and other distractions. So, please accept my very best wishes for a happy, healthy, peaceful and productive New Year. And thank you for your efforts to make Wikipedia a truly fabulous and very useful contribution to knowledge. Sincerely, John Hill (talk) 10:33, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. As an editor who seems to be familiar with sports templates, especially for Nepalese footballers, I was wondering if you might take a look at this article. It needs a rescue from someone who is familiar with the topic. I'm going to pass the word a bit to others as well, just in case you don't have the opportunity. Thanks!--OliverTwisted (Talk) (Stuff) 11:17, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Connirae Andreas
[edit]A tag has been placed on Connirae Andreas requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. J8079s (talk) 04:19, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- I remove the speedy deletion request. I think the article can be improved. Connirae has edit a number of books that appear notable. We probably need to look closely at the notability criteria and review the current page content so that it could be improved. ----Action potential discuss contribs 09:45, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Jonatha Brooke Image
[edit]Thank you for the heads-up, but no. I uploaded the file originally, having shot the photograph myself as indicated. I thought I had correctly given all necessary permissions, but I'm apparently wrong. Also, my Wikipedia username and login apparently don't apply to the Commons area, and I'm honestly not interested in creating a new username just to argue points like this.
I had earlier problems when another image, of Ms. Brooke's erstwhile partner Jennifer Kimball, was summarily deleted for reasons that remain unclear to me. I offered this image of Ms. Brooke as a free non-commercial image, and I thought I had given it all necessary permissions, but I do not understand why there are problems with it. I am tired of fighting what I consider to be such petty issues. They should just go ahead and delete the file if they believe such actions improve Wikipedia.
I'm sorry if I sound a bit cynical, but I have little patience with the bureaucratic mindset, and I no longer have the time or energy to deal with it here. -- Couillaud (talk) 16:46, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you anyway. I will link you statement in the talk page of the nominator. Regards, Davin (talk) 17:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks again for trying, but upon checking the image, I note that the nominator for this image is the same person who nominated my other image for speedy deletion. The license was correct (for both images) when I placed them there in 2007; if they were not, then someone wasn't doing their job back then. I suspect that Wikipedia policy has changed since these images were first uploaded; I cannot comprehend why the particular license I used would have even been in place otherwise. I know that people believe they're doing a good thing with this, but I just don't see it. -- Couillaud (talk) 19:21, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, the reason is very comprehensible, namely you stated "non-commercial use". In fact there are commercial clones (and other) of Wikipedia that make it impossible to make use of images that state "non-commercial use". Commons is languagewide and is different from English Wikipedia, where "fair use" is accepted. If you state "GFDL" or "GNU FDL", together with "I made this photograph myself", it will be accepted Wikimedia-wide. Regards, Davin (talk) 19:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'm actually more confused than ever, though for different reasons. If I understand your explanation, then the use I specified when I added it the En.Wikipedia, but no longer now that you've moved it to Commons. So is there a specific reason it had to be moved to Commons, as in a new requirement? In other words, was it moved to Commons by choice or of necessity? -- Couillaud (talk) 02:04, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Actually I was not precise enough. "Non-commercial use" is not valid on any Wikipedia and with that statement, the image would have been deleted anywhere on Wikipedia. Davin (talk) 07:41, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Then please go ahead and delete the image ASAP. You mentioned the "non-commercial clones" of Wikipedia, and it was never my intent for someone (other than the artist herself, who was sent copies of my shots) to use my images while charging money for access to their site.
- Final thought: If the license I used on Wikipedia was NEVER valid, why was it available in the first place?--Couillaud (talk) 19:04, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not the person that will delete or nominated the photo. I'm the one that saw that someone nominated it and that's why I kept you posted. The only thing I did earlier, was making the photo available for all languages/projects. The only thing you have to state, is that this photograph is taken by you and that you share it without to many restrictions: in Wiki jargon that is called "GDFL" Davin (talk) 19:31, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Gyantse
[edit]Dear Davin: Thank you for removing the TAR bar from the Gyantse article. I realised soon after I added it that it was unnecessary and thought I had removed all that I had added. Tomorrow, I will go through the edits I made about that time and remove any others I may have added to articles. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 11:58, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hi John, I don't know how I did it, but it happened accidentally. You can put it there again or leave it whatever you think is best. I only meant to fix the interwikis. Regards, Davin (talk) 20:47, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi Davin: No, I think I would rather leave it off - it does not really add anything to the article. We already know Gyantse is in Tibet - so I think we should just leave it as it is unless someone points out a reason why it is useful. All best wishes, John Hill (talk) 22:11, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Tibetan ä and e
[edit]The vowels ä and e are phonemically distinct in Lhasa Tibetan, and must be distinguished in the Tournadre system of transcription. In my view an encyclopedia should use a consistent scientific transcription, a long time ago my attempt to implement Wylie was shot down, and a sort of consensus grew that Tournadre was acceptable. It has not been consistently implemented since because most editors don't know when to use ä, but this seems like a problem not something to be encouraged. Tibetologist (talk) 07:39, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
- If Tournadre has developed a system that functions well, I'm very well inclined to meet that one. Wylie is not a good system, when I'm concerned, since I feel it is too far away from general human comprehension, and therefore not suited for an encyclopedia for all kinds of people like Wikipedia. Currently, however, here on Wikipedia there is a mix of all kinds of transliterations and yesterday I tried to fix that in case of a few articles. I think it is a good thing to choose just one system for all Tibetan names. Can you please refer where I can find more (on-line, if available) on the system of Tournadre? Best regards, Davin (talk) 10:57, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
I am afraid the Tournadre system is not described online to my knowledge. You could check out his _Manuel of Standard Tibetan_ and I could email you material if you wanted. Tibetologist (talk) 21:43, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- From my perspective Nicolas T. developed an excellent transcription system and then David Germano came along and broke it and took credit for inventing it. How did this happen, precisely by getting rid of the distinction between ä and e. As a rule of thumb, use 'e' when there is an 'e' in the Wylie transliteration and use 'ä' when the a vowel is changed by a following letter. E.g. gser 'gold' becomes ser but but rgyal-po 'king' becomes gyälpo. Basically it is the same as puttting the dots over the u and o, which for some reason Germano doesn't mind.
As far as I can tell Dieter Schuh's system is the same as Germano's. It doesn't seem that German since it uses 'ch' instead of 'tsch' and 'sh' instead of 'sch', as you point out it also doesn't distinguish ä and e. I wonder what he is thinking. Tibetologist (talk) 07:51, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

portal
[edit]I saw you made the Tibet Portal. If it's not a problem can you make a Portal for Bhutan? Bhutan doesn't have a portal. If you don't to make it you don't have too but I'm just asking. Spongie555 (talk) 05:43, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Spongie555, after making the portal on Tibet, I wanted to fill it with worthfull content. Nevertheless I stopped there when I saw how disorganized the categories are on English Wikipedia. So actually I'm not so satisfied on the content Portal:Tibet has right now. So, filling it with relevant content is most of the work.
- Nevertheless, I've been working quite structuredly when creating Portal:Tibet, and I think it must be just quite easy when you make the portal yourself. As a matter of fact you can succeed in the following way:
- Retrieve the text from the page Portal:Tibet, Find "Tibet" and Replace to "Bhutan" and save this in a page called Portal:Bhutan.
- Do the same to each of the articles in the Category:Portal:Tibet
- except for Portal:Tibetan Buddhism and Portal:Himalaya region.
- Note here that three pages starting with "Portal:Tibet/Nominate/Selected" are redirects.
- In many of these pages, not only the two lands should be found+replaced, but in many cases the content too.
- Actually, that's all.
- I wish you good luck. If you need help underway, please don't hesitate to ask. The quickest way is asking me directly on Dutch Wikipedia ("Pagina opslaan" = "Save message")
- Kind regards, Davin (talk) 13:02, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Proposed Tibetan naming conventions
[edit]A few months ago, I posted a new proposal for Tibetan naming conventions, i.e. conventions that can be used to determine the most appropriate titles for articles related to the Tibetan region. This came out of discussions about article titles on Talk:Qamdo and Talk:Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture. I hope that discussions on the proposal's talk page will lead to consensus in favour of making these conventions official, but so far only a few editors have left comments. If you would be interested in taking a look at the proposed naming conventions and giving your opinion, I would definitely appreciate it. Thanks — Nat Krause(Talk!·What have I done?) 22:19, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- In general I can say I'm in favour of using names as they appear in English literature; I saw that Tsering Shakya was mentioned: I agree to his standard. That I've chosen another variation on Dutch Wikipedia, is because English/German/French books or Chinese variations all differ, and there isn't a standard for Dutch. When other things are concerned, like qualifiers of "Town"/"County" etc.: these are conventions that differ very much from one Wikipedia to another. I think you'd better choose a way that is chosen most of the time here. Good luck, Davin (talk) 16:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

- That's very kind of yours! Motivates me to write three more of the red links appearing in the article! I'll do that on Friday.
- Where the website Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center is concerned, one can do it in the following two ways. Both are quite intensive regretfully. That's why I suggested to mention just the website, and not the exact link.
- Important to know is that "Khri" is Tibetan for Tripa, so "Khri 05" signifies "5th Tripa"
- On the website you need to click on "all in any order" + e.g. "Khri 5". Then the website will return "persons: 3". If you click on that link, you'll notice that "blo gros chos skyong" has listed "khri 05". If you subsequently click on this name, you'll eventually arrive at this reference card.
- Another way is to search by Wylie. Instead of "all in any order" it's better to leave the searching mode on "exact". The rest of the steps is like I described at search method # 1.
- I hope this isn't to intensive for you. As I said before, just say no if it's too much.
- Best regards, Davin (talk) 16:58, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Kham football team
[edit]The article Kham football team has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No evidence they actually exist/existed, user at Help Desk believes it should be deleted as a hoax.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
