Costa Rican colon symbol image
[edit]Hi, Daniel,
How about putting an image of the Costa Rican colón symbol in this table, which would look better than the little square. I've uploaded the image here but I don't know how to put it in the table. Do you? --DBlomgren 03:02, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Regarding your posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Abandoned Articles, I think the guidelines on how to work on a block of articles is pretty complete. You might want to just "claim" a block of ten articles and start working on those. As mentioned on the talk page of the project, the reality is that most of the "ancient" pages are disambiguation. Most of those do need work, and it's fairly easy work to fix these. So you might just want to learn more about disambiguation pages (do read the two information pages listed in the guidelines) and practice fixing a few.
Alternatively, or perhaps after you've done a block and want to work on "real" articles, not disambiguation pages, you could just go to Special:Ancientpages and jump ahead to number 301 or further, then start checking for "real" articles. When you find one that looks interesting, follow the detailed guidelines in the project in order to make the article less "abandoned". -- John Broughton (☎☎) 17:18, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

An update on Wikipedia:WikiProject Abandoned Articles
[edit]The project has reached the quarter-way point for the work on the list of the oldest 1000 ("abandoned") articles in Wikipedia: 250 articles have been reviewed and updated!
The project now has 21 members. If you're no longer interested, please take your name off the list; you won't get any further messages like this one. On the other hand, if you're still interested, please consider signing up for a(nother) block of 10 articles to work on - if everyone did this, we'd be almost halfway through those 1000 articles!
Finally, please note that project approach has changed slightly - there is now a section for editors to place articles that need to be "adopted", or to adopt articles that need further work. This means that if you find an article in a block of ten that needs more work than you have time for, it has a place to be put.

Romanesque architecture
[edit]Thank you for the beautiful picture Daniel. I enjoyed seeing it. But I had to take it out of that article, because it isn't Romanesque architecture. Romanesque is the style that came about after the fall of the Roman empire, when the principles that governed the style had been forgotten, but some of the structural principals were retained. A distinct style evolved over a period of time and can be seen right across Europe. There was then a Revival in the 19th century.
But your church is much too refined to be Romanesque Revival. It is Classical Revival and is based either on the style of Ancient Rome, or the revival of the classical style which began in the Renaissance with Brunelleschi and continued on, with Palladio, Michelangelo into the 17th century with Christopher Wren, Inigo Jones and so on. In England, the Classical style prevailed, but in Europe they went all out for Baroque (which is much fancier, with more curves and carvings) and it was Baroque architecture that was carried to South America for churches, while the Classical style was carried to North America. That lovely church of your has beautifully proportioned pilasters attached to the walls. It has Classical proportions. I can't see any Baroque details there, so I am going to presume that it is Classical in style, like a church built in England in the 17th or 18th century. Amandajm (talk) 15:07, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Daniel, what I have tried to explain here is that there is a confusion between "Roman Style" The refined Classical style of Ancient Rome, and "Romanesque Style" the much less refined style that spread across Europe in the 10th- 12th centuries, and is strongly associated with large, organised Monastries like that at Cluny in France.
- This building is not Romanesque. It is Classical. Now I have looked a more pictures I see that it is clearly an "Ancient Roman" style building. That is why it uses the word "Roman" rather than just saying "Classical". (A Classical Revival building might look like an Ancient Greek building and not like a Roman one.)
- What I'm telling you is that your church is based on the buildings in the top line of the gallery. It is in the same style as the Classical Revival buildings in the middle line of the gallery. It has almost nothing to do with the Romanesque buildings in the bottom line of the gallery.
- Amandajm (talk) 04:55, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Ancient Roman Buildings: 1. Pont Flavien, France
-
2. Ostian Theatre, Rome
-
3. Roman city Gate

4. One of Rome's most ancient churches, Santa Balbina
-
Classical Revival (Roman style) churches in Germany: 1. St Ludwig Ansbach
-
2. Aufestehungskirche

3. Rinnthal Kirche

4. Sankt Blasien

OK! I took an in depth look at the mouldings to which Johnbod referred. They are definitely more Romanesque than Roman in form. The architect seems to have used them consistently, right around the interior. I wonder why? They are a very odd choice. I withdraw my statement that the church has nothing to do with the German Romanesque buildings in Row 3. The positioning of the shaftes down the edges of truncated piers is also odd. What I would say is that there is a considerable amount of freedom in the design of the interior elements, which is not apparent in the exterior. It is a pity that so little remains. It is such a big building that it would have probably had a double row of peirs or columns to support the upper part of the building. Unfortunately these don't seem to be present.
The exterior (if I have rightly indentifed all the parts) is wholly Roman Classical Revival, with no sign of Romanesque. If your learned departments are basing their assessment on the magnificent facade and the other parts in the photos, and calling the "Romanesque" then they are entirely wrong. It is Roman, not Romanesque. If they are looking at the molding on the interior, then this detail is more Romanesque in form.
I would most definitely not refer to it as an example of Romanesque Revival, but of Roman Classical Revival. If you go to this page Regional characteristics of Romanesque architecture, and check out the 27 facades, and the numerous west doors, then check out the facade of this building and you will see why I am saying that it is not Romanesque. These paired pilasters are absolutely typical of a classical building. See St Pauls. The way in which the arch and its moulding sits on top of a capital-type moulding in every doorway is taken from buildings like the Colosseum.
Johnbod and I agree that it is Classical Revival, with some Romanesque details. We both know our stuff.

You have been named in a proposed ArbCom decision
[edit]Hi, Imprimaturcr. In the open Manning naming dispute case, a decision has been proposed which relates to you. The Arbitration Committee is voting on the proposals, and discussion is taking place on the talk page. If you have any comments or concerns, you should respond at the talk page. For the Arbitration Committee, Rschen7754 05:14, 9 October 2013 (UTC).
This arbitration case has been closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:
- Hitmonchan (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic-banned from all pages relating to any transgender topic or individual, broadly construed.
- IFreedom1212 (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic-banned from all pages relating to any transgender topic or individual, broadly construed.
- Tarc (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic-banned from all pages relating to any transgender topic or individual, broadly construed.
- Josh Gorand (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic-banned from all pages relating to any transgender topic or individual, broadly construed.
- Baseball Bugs (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic-banned from all pages relating to any transgender topic or individual, broadly construed. He is also topic banned from all pages (including biographies) related to leaks of classified information, broadly construed.
- David Gerard (talk · contribs) is admonished for acting in a manner incompatible with the community's expectations of administrators (see #David Gerard's use of tools).
- David Gerard (talk · contribs) is indefinitely prohibited from using his administrator permissions (i) on pages relating to transgender people or issues and (ii) in situations involving such pages. This restriction may be first appealed after six months have elapsed, and every six months thereafter.
- The standard discretionary sanctions adopted in Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Sexology for (among other things) "all articles dealing with transgender issues" remain in force. For the avoidance of doubt, these discretionary sanctions apply to any dispute regarding the proper article title, pronoun usage, or other manner of referring to any individual known to be or self-identifying as transgender, including but not limited to Chelsea/Bradley Manning. Any sanctions imposed should be logged at the Sexology case, not this one.
- All editors, especially those whose behavior was subject to a finding in this case, are reminded to maintain decorum and civility when engaged in discussions on Wikipedia, and to avoid commentary that demeans any other person, intentionally or not.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:36, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
[edit]US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |
