Catania (Culture)

[edit]

Dear countryman of mine, I can't see what's the harm in writing in whatever language in personal talk-pages. Since it seems that writing in English it's a matter of honour with you, I will bear respect and write in English here; anyway, in my personal talk-page you can reply in Italian if you like, even in Roman dialect :) You have to know that I love English very much, maybe more than my own mother-tongue, but I don't pay a blind homage to it. Anyway, concerning the removal of images of Bellini and Verga from the Cultural section of the article about Catania, I disagree with you. Bellini and Verga are more than mere mentions and corroborating the lines about them with their images is a good way to add verve and texture to the section. Moreover, the images were tiny ones, and they didn't spoil the article making it an unreadable bunch of images as you stated. On the contrary, I find it that the Culture section is now grey and opaque, lifeless... Drunkpiper (talk) 13:36, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Attilio, and thanks for your kind reply. I will continue to write in English here. Concerning those photos, personally I think they should have to be restored... we could try to reinsert them paying attention to the general layout of the page, so that it won't turn out in a schifezza :):):) What do you think? Tell me if it's ok with you. BTW, I'm Davide, nice to meet you :) Drunkpiper (talk) 17:14, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Immagini di G. Torre

[edit]

Ciao e grazie. --Cruccone (talk) 21:04, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cathedrals and Cathedrals of England

[edit]

Trust me, many of your recent edits have been very poor, inappropriate, and a nuisance, because they will have to be sorted, and reverted one by one.

  • Cobh Cathedral, which can be seen for 100 miles, is a landmark. It's architectural importance is irrelevant, in that article. As it happens, Cobh is one of the most significant cathedrals of the best-known British Gothic revival architect, Pugin. While Gothic Revival means very little to an Italian, it is significant across Northern Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australasia. However, I found another place for Nidaros, to keep you happy.
  • I also returned the section on England, expanded in some part and reduced in others. Once again, the history of Protestant cathedrals is relevant to a great many people. This is the part I expanded, with reference to other countries.
  • About the Architecture of English Cathedrals: it is normal in English, when talking about buildings or institutes of the same kind to abrieviate them to a place name. For example, if one said that the University of Leeds was playing cricket against the University of Manchester, having used their full name once, one would then call them Leeds and Manchester. Likewise, if I was talking about two paintings located in the National Gallery, London, and the National Gallery, Washington, further reference to the locations would simply be "London" and "Washington". So if the whole article is about cathedrals, and each subheading gives a building its full designation, after that, it can simply be referred to by its place name. This is normal English usage. I'm not going to change it back. Too much trouble. But I am telling you, for future reference.
  • You persistently inserted an error of expression. It is normal to refer to a particular feature as being "at" a site. One talks about the "Angel Choir" at Lincoln, not the "Angel Choir" in the Lincoln Cathedral. That is the way it is written in English. Many of these feature cannot be said to be "in" the building because they make up part of the structure itself. Do you really imagine that someone like me would get a point of English expression like that wrong?
  • The word "splendid" (used of the early English facade of Wells) had three references after it. To leave out an adjective is a bit like writing "Florence Cathedral has a dome" or "Orvieto Cathedral has a Gothic facade". Neither of these sentences express the importance and the spectacular quality of the dome of Florence and the facade of Orvieto.
Likewise Wells cathedral does not simply have an Early English facade. It has the finest Early English facade in England.
  • "Postcard". It's not necessary to write "in a postcard". It is normal to just write "oil painting", "fresco", "etching" or whatever, and the date.
You are a naughty boy!

I hope that you are well and that your life is sorting itself out.

Ciao! Amandajm (talk) 08:06, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Re use of place names, within the context of the article, it's clear what is meant.
  • Re English cathedrals- the history of cathedrals in England has been rather different to that of all the other European countries. The fact that bishops were nomadic was, as far as I know, unique to the British situation. The very samll number of (mostly) very large cathedrals was also highly unusual. Also, the conversion from Catholicism to protestantism was total. That didn't happen anywhere else. For this reason, Britain needs to be dealt with as an exception.
I expanded the next section, as you will see. Someone with a better knowledge of Lutheran and other protestant traditions might expand it more.
It is 6:30 here in Terra Australis, and time to cook my son's dinner. Hooroo!
Amandajm (talk) 08:35, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What I would rely like to see is an expansion of the history of cathedrals in Italy and other European countries. The stuff on England is all that I left behind after removing a very lengthy section. That'ss what is now located at the other page.
But if you want to chop it- just leave the direction to the Main article somewhere, either in the text, or in the "See also" section. Amandajm (talk) 09:52, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. We are eating Italian tonight, chicken in sauce of tomatoes, peppers, field mushrooms, garlic and basilico, with black olives (They are Greek, not Italian). And pasta. Amandajm (talk) 09:59, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've been busy! Thank you for your advice! I prefer the pasta al dente. However my son is on a gluten-free diet, so our pasta is never very nice, it is either chewy, gluey or soggy. The chicken was delicious. Amandajm (talk) 21:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HI, I've just expanded Acerno. Howver, Iam not fluent in Italian, could you proof read it and check it with this and add any missing info/correct it. Shouldn't take you 5 mins, I have nominated it for a DYK BTW. Himalayan 19:00, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it needs to be briefly mentioned and linked anyway even if not in detail it is still relevant.. Yes there ought to be a big drive on italian comunes by far more people to get them up to a start class level. Unfortunately few have them have been edited since 2006. I'll try in due course to get the comunes of Salerno up to a similar sort of level anyway... Thanks for your help, I'd appreciate any proof readin in my future expanded articles. Himalayan 10:45, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you translate the remainder of Albanella. Some of it didn't translate that well there is the history and a sentence of two in the churches section. Himalayan 15:54, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks it would be good to work with you gradually on these comunes. I am willing to do as much as I can and translate what I understand amakes sense. Could you translate the info given on these two pages for Alfano and check the info about the wine, I'm not sure I got the names right as they seme to refer to places..... Let's make it better than the Italian wiki article! If there is enough info we could create some DYKs on some of the Italian comunes, get them on the front page, time permitting of course, as like you I work on ma ny many different subjects and areas. Thanks for uploading File:Kriminal reprint.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. "Minor" edits that are not minor

[edit]

Hi, I notice all of your edits are marked "m" for minor. WP:MINOR says minor edits should be used only for uncontroversial edits that do not change the meaning in any way. However, many of your edits are adding new text or otherwise changing the meaning, e.g. this one is not a minor edit because it adds new text and removes existing text from the article.

This edit moved the text in the first bullet point into the first paragraph: "the weather is perfect for solar energy (Cerdanya has almost 2400 hours of sunshine a year)". Your version is confusing because it could be taken as implying that amount of sunshine is the only reason the weather is considered perfect for solar energy. However, there are actually two reasons—amount of sunshine and low wind. The original wording was better because it makes this clear by using a separate bullet point for each reason. Your edit was not a minor edit because it changed the meaning.

In your account's preferences, there is an option that automatically marks all of your edits as minor. I think yours is probably enabled. Please click on Special:Preferences to disable it. Please be careful in future about which edits you mark as minor. 194.158.79.70 (talk) 19:31, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Attilios, I assume you have read my previous comment because I see you followed me to edit three articles that I edited recently. You have made 80 minor edits and 4 ordinary edits since my previous comment. Many of your "minor" edits seem to me to be very different from minor edits per WP:MINOR. Also, edit summaries like "Sthg" are completely uninformative; if you're going to give edit summaries, please describe your edits more precisely, per WP:EDITSUMMARY.
Below are some examples of your recent edits that I think are not WP:MINOR edits. I would like to discuss these with you. Can you explain why you marked these edits as minor? Do you think they are WP:MINOR edits? I look forward to reading your reply here. 194.158.79.70 (talk) 15:25, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Flag of Aguilar de la Frontera Spain svg.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Modica Layout

[edit]

I changed the images to go on the left because of big white gaps in the middle of the article. This sometimes happens in articles like this one where there's a big long table down the right hand side and not enough text to match it. With the images on the left at least there's a chance to match the images up with the relevant text. I noticed in your edit you left one image of the castle of the Count on the left and put the other images on the right under the table. Now there are NO images opposite the Main Sights section. In my edit you've got Main Sights, and bang - there are the main sights. I prefer my layout. Mdw0 (talk) 23:41, 30 December 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Lyons la forêt

[edit]

Hello Sir,

Before correcting the article, please take care of the dates : 1135 is not 1335 and try to understand history. In 1419 the English did not took Lyons AGAIN, but they conquered it for the first time. In 1203 the king of France did not defeat the English but the Normans, that is not exactly the same and he conquered Normandy that had been independent since 911. Hi Attilio,

Good work! And what a coincidence: I’ve been reading about the saint recently—parts of his legend are quite entertaining—and planning to expand his short and misleading article. (English-language sources tend to describe him as a Benedictine, for some reason….) Oh, I enjoyed the Cappella Portinari, too. (I have friends in Milan who I’ve stayed with quite often but—stupidly I now realise—I’ve never been inside Sant’Eustorgio.) Cheers! Ian Spackman (talk) 20:14, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Santa Maria in Strada

[edit]

I don't want to change this until we discuss the content of the Italian Wikipedia article. It seems to me your translation is a bit loose. Amandajm (talk) 06:10, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Questions "The brickwork façade is hut-shaped, with numerous decorations and geometric elements. It is formed by horizontal bands separated by frames. The portal has a brickwork arch and marble architrave dating to the 19th century. Over of the portal is a series of fake niches with (apart the three central ones, which are windows) traces of 14th century frescoes. In the third band are rich terracotta decoration, while in the middle of the façade is a rose window with concentric decorations, flanked by two ogival double mullioned windows with square frames. The decoration of the façade's summit includes a statue of the "Madonna with Child", between two circles and Lombard bands crowning the upper edge. The bell tower, originally of the same height of the façade, is decorated with mullioned windows, Lombard bands and a cusp."

  • "hut-shaped". This term is not used to describe churches in English. I suppose that you have translated a particular word from Italian to the nearest equivalent which is "hut". We would just tend to say that the building is "aisleless", or if it has aisless but the facade does not reflect this we would describe the front as a screen. However, the Italian solution might be better, if the term can be better interpreted.
  • How do we know that the bell tower was originally the same height as the facade? Was it completed in the 19th century?

Amandajm (talk) 06:16, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The term "hut-shaped" isn't used in English as an architectural term. Amandajm (talk) 15:07, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Suslov IT.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Suslov IT.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:34, 29 January 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Damiens.rf 22:34, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have changed the Medrano page to make his date of birth uncertain. I didn't introduce the 1703 date, but I see it is given in the first reference (on the page numbered 50) without any suggestion of uncertainty. Do you think that is unreliable? About Carlo Fruttero article

[edit]

Hi. Perhaps we already had a short exchange about a similar topic in the past, I am not sure. Are you sure that removing information improves this article? I believe that a very quick account of the listed works' content and background, their first (at least) publishers, and the meaning of the title when an English translation has not been published are part of a complete article about a writer. About the literal translation of the title when no English edition exists, check for instance (just to mention the first article I found), the article about Kenzaburō Ōe. Do you know of WP guidelines about these points that I am ignoring? Thanks, Goochelaar (talk) 14:39, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, why did you remove {{sfd-t}} from the {{OuluProvince-geo-stub}} template? As far as I can see, the discussion on this and three other obsolete provincial stub types is still open. --Silvonen (talk) 05:09, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"as usual nationaltiy forgotten when UK or US people writes the articles" - Attilios

[edit]

Oh, are we implying some systemic bias? (cos I try to avoid it) I hope your comment is well researched. I have published three new articles in the last two days. Benjamin Stillingfleet - British... I have a ref.... and article says he is. Samuel Oshoffa from Benin with ref ... and says he is and Richard Samuel .... birthplace and parents unknown..... probably English .. but I have no ref to prove it. Oh yes ... and top of the morning for st Patricks day! Do feel free to bite but remember ... Victuallers (talk) 16:54, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
