- Thanks for this enthusiastic invitation. There's a little problem with the frame you have used. You forgot to close it with slash div after We hope to see you there (which I've now added). As a result, additional messages on people's talk pages will come inside the frame. I'm not sure how this can be fixed on all the pertinent talk pages. Maybe some expert at MediaWiki can sort it out.--Ipigott (talk) 10:04, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: Argh -- sorry about that! I've got the mailing list, so I can visit the pages and fix it myself this time. Alanna the Brave (talk) 10:32, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green
Hi @Alanna the Brave! I saw you were listed as a coordinator for Women in Green and I have a related question. An article on a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe I recently nominated for GA was just reviewed and passed by one of the Women in Green participants. I wasn't aware of the project up until today (embarrassingly so), and my only contribution was as a nominator, though I was wondering if I may add my name to the participants list? I'm not sure I will be able to review any articles by the end of the editathon, though I'd love to be involved more substantially in any future editions. Thanks so much and congratulations on the amazing work! Ppt91talk 17:45, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ppt91, obviously not Alanna the Brave, but a page stalker and member of Women in Green. Absolutely add your name. We'd love to have your help in improving articles about women. The editathon is just part of our annual initiatives, which you can see here. SusunW (talk) 18:23, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

- @Ppt91: So glad you found us (and that you're interested)! As an extra suggestion, if you add your name to the general WikiProject Women in Green list of members, you'll receive an invitation mailout the next time we have an event. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 22:42, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Alanna the Brave Thanks and done. I've written a few articles on women artists, particularly on public works in New York City like the Louise Nevelson Plaza, and it would be wonderful to engage with other related material on GA-level. Looking forward to the next event. Ppt91talk 15:09, 28 June 2023 (UTC)

So I wrote this thinking she works in both WiR and WiG's pacifist editathons. But, I am thinking I need help in Canada. I tried to use her daughter-in-law's book sparingly because it clearly isn't independent. But that meant that I left out a lot. Fisher says Dempsey was was a commander in the Order of the British Empire and talks a bunch about Dempsey's trips to Hollywood. I couldn't find anything in searches for the Canada Gazette and there is no listing here either. I found a reference in a newspaper that in November 1944 she did a fashion spread in Chatelaine and in 1950 did a spread on her 3rd visit to Hollywood, but I cannot access the magazine archives, which I was hoping to be able to access to see if there are photos or info. Would you be interested in poking around and seeing if there are more photos or info on her there? I think if so, we could look to FA, if you can help. (By the way, her husband was this guy and might have photos as well.)
On photos, our page on Canada copyright says "All photographs (except those subject to Crown Copyright, for which see below) taken before 1 January 1949 are in the public domain". But, I don't think that lets us use them on WP because they also have to be out of copyright in the US. I think our only two options for that to hold true are published before 1928 or it was in the public domain in its home country on the URAA date of January 1, 1996, so it would have to be published in Canada by 1945. This says it is in the PD, but I don't see how. The photographer is living, wasn't born until 1945 (illogical he could have taken it before 1949), and looks to be from the 1960s or 1970s, when you compare it to these. (Besides which I have no clue who Carolyn Davis is or how she could grant permission to use Cavoukian's work?) So, barring something published in Canada, which I cannot find, I am sure I can use 1922 basketball photo and 1941 image (Better copy was run in 1946 but need the 1941 for proof of publication.) I might be able to use this 1942 image, but 1) it isn't very clear and 2) I don't know if the creator CBC is a crown copyright. Any ideas? SusunW (talk) 17:54, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hey SusunW, happy to help if I can. :-) I'll take some time over the next few days to see if I can locate any photos or info for Dempsey. Thoughts about copyright:
- It's my understanding too that Canadian images should be from 1945 or earlier to meet both Canadian and American public domain rules for Wikipedia (there may be other ways to establish PD status, but that's the most straightforward way).
- It looks like Carolyn Davis (AKA Carolyn Davis Fisher??) was Dempsey's daughter-in-law. Maybe Cavoukian relinquished rights to the photo, either to Dempsey or Davis, and that's how Davis was able to release the photo into the wild, as it were? However -- even if the photo is now PD in Canada, it may still not meet American criteria for use on WP (not PD in Canada in 1996).
- Regarding CBC: my instinct is to say that CBC does not count as Crown copyright, as it does not operate under direct control of a government department or the Crown (even if it receives budget funding via Parliament), but I could be wrong. If you'd like me to find an answer for sure, I can try contacting someone to find out if CBC has Crown copyright.
- Alanna the Brave (talk) 21:19, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yay! Aha, I hadn't put Carolyn Fisher/Davis together, but I still can't see how it can meet US copyright because of the age of the photographer and when it likely was taken. (was it published? no clue). I don't think it necessary to research Crown copyright, unless we find a better image that the CBC made. I've uploaded the two that I am sure of. Please feel free to edit it, add to it, or whatever. I appreciate the help. SusunW (talk) 21:39, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Susun -- Okay, so I've added those two photos and a few snippets of poetry/writing info, but I think that's all I can add for now. I'm wondering whether there could be more photos of Dempsey stored in archives somewhere, so I may try to reach out to someone about that (just to find out). Alanna the Brave (talk) 19:03, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- Very cool. I am so curious as to why her d-i-l thought she was a commander in the Order of the British Empire. If that were the case, it would seem like it would be easier to verify. It's a mystery. I appreciate your help. I will nominate it for WIG's women in peace focus at some point before the end of the year, but there's no rush. SusunW (talk) 19:09, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- @SusunW: It's definitely odd that neither of us has found confirmation of the British Empire award so far -- it's the kind of thing I would expect to see mentioned in multiple places. I do notice that Valerie J. Korinek says Dempsey's Chatelaine predecessor, Byrne Hope Sanders, was made Commander of the British Empire in July 1946 [1] -- so maybe Dempsey's daughter-in-law just got them mixed up? Alanna the Brave (talk) 21:26, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- Aha! That's a good possibility. Thanks for finding that. Like you, if it were true, I would've thought we'd find something fairly easily. I really appreciate your help and insights on the article. SusunW (talk) 21:34, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- I've let it gel in main space for a month and done a few more searches but have found nothing substantial to add. Going to go ahead and nominate her today. SusunW (talk) 14:33, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- @SusunW: Alrighty -- good luck! I think it looks great. Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:23, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Next Women in Green Editathon -- planning
Hey @Mujinga: and @Grnrchst: I'm not as early as I had hoped to be, but I wanted to get a conversation started about the next Women in Green Editathon (October). If you're still up for assisting, I would definitely appreciate the help in pulling things together.
- Theme/structure of this event? Changes or ideas? I'd like to do something other than just another "wildcard" theme, but don't want to limit participants too much in which articles they can work on. Something related to "around the world" might be a nice thing to try, although we would have to keep in mind that participants may have individual challenges accessing sourcing from different regions of the world.
- What do you think of the barnstars? Worth continuing? :-) I haven't really had any comments about them, but I like the idea of acknowledging the work of participants.
- I had some feedback from one participant in June who was discouraged by the shortened "quickfail" review they received (they didn't feel it was constructive to the GA learning/improving process). We currently disallow nominations that are quickfailed -- maybe we should also disallow quickfail reviews from our reviewers during the event, just to encourage a full-length review (even if it fails the article)? What do you think?
- Thoughts around improving promotion and increasing participation? Past events have used the WiR newsletter, a post on the Community events board, individual invites to relevant WikiProjects, and/or a mass mailout to WiG members. Maybe we need to promote earlier? Or partner with another project?
Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:00, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hey Alanna! I've been thinking about what to do for this and am up for assisting. Unfortunately I'm probably not going to be available for the first couple weeks of October, as I have a long-overdue holiday planned, but I'll try to help out with organising it as best as I can.
- As I mentioned during the previous event, I'm very strongly in favour of us doing an "around the world" type theme for the next one. The content of these edit-a-thons (not to mention the WikiProject more broadly) has generally skewed towards the western world/global north and particularly towards the United States, so I think having an event for focusing on the rest of the world could go a long way. Concerns about access to sourcing are certainly valid though, and we'll have to think about how to address that.
- I'm pro-barnstar, it's good to recognise participants for their work, even in a small way.
- Disallowing quick fail reviews may be necessary if we want to avoid discouraging people. Worth nothing that the good article backlog drive just happened and there were a few cases of quick-fails being rejected as invalid, so it may be worth us contacting the organisers of that for advice on that front.
- This all sounds good. Promoting earlier is probably a good idea, as I only had a week's notice to try and gather colleagues together for the last one. Partnering with other projects, especially if we go ahead with a geography-specific event, is definitely something we should aim for.
- I'll have more of a think about this over the coming days. --Grnrchst (talk) 21:47, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst: Are you familiar with the Women in Red World Contest from 2017? It was a one-month article creation challenge that had participants aim to create 2000 new articles about women around the world (they succeeded!). It's too big in scale for our event to replicate, but I really liked its collective goal/team atmosphere. What if we chose a smaller collective goal, such as nominating/reviewing articles about women from at least 30 different countries (our last event managed about 21)? We could reach out to as many geographical WikiProjects as possible when inviting participants, compile an ongoing group resource list to help with sourcing, and really encourage editors to work together on articles. Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:41, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Alanna the Brave: That sounds like a great idea! --Grnrchst (talk) 08:14, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Grnrchst and @Mujinga -- life keeps getting very distracting these days, but I'm circling back to this again. I've started a new October editathon page (haven't yet linked it up with the main WiG area), and have updated invite & talk page templates for it. New barnstar is currently in the works. Can you take a look and tell me what you think? Edits and critiques very welcome. Alanna the Brave (talk) 02:08, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst and @Mujinga: I think this needs to get rolling if we're going to have enough time to promote, so I've launched the event page and linked it up with the WiG main pages. If you spot anything that needs tweaks, feel free to make edits. I'm going to start reaching out to other WikiProjects this week -- let me know if you've got time to help out with promotion. - @Alanna the Brave: I've added myself to the event and put a notice on the WP@ talk page to see if anyone else there is interested in joining. Annoyingly I may be forced to participate less in this one than in previous events, due to health issues, but I will try to get at least one article submitted. WP:WIG Progress numbers
Hi there - I sas that you're responsible for the progress numbers at the top of Women in Green's page, and I was wondering if you could tell me how you obtained them? Last time you updated them, you stated that we've 4671 Women articles, and I can't find how to reproduce a similar number; I've been playing around with some SPARQL queries to see WIG's progress against biography GAs, and the results I'm getting aren't very heartening. Thanks, Frzzl talk; contribs 14:23, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Frzzl -- thanks for reaching out. I update those numbers using the numbers generated by JL-Bot on our Featured Content page. Another user was responsible for setting that up, but it's my understanding that JL-Bot does regular scans for all GA articles, FA articles, and FA lists that have a WikiProject Women-related category or talk page banner -- not just WikiProject Women, but also WP Women's History, WP Feminism, WP Women writers, WP Women in Music, etc. Something important to note is that we don't only track women's biographies: our numbers are also inclusive of articles about women's works (e.g., books by women, music albums by female artists, films written/directed by women). Hopefully that helps clarify? Let me know if I can help with anything else. Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:24, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your response, that accounts for the discrepancies! It may be interesting to note that if we only look at biographies, almost 20% of GAs are women, and 17% of FAs - not exactly great, but perculiarily, a fair deal higher than looking at all GAs and FAs. Kind regards, Frzzl talk; contribs 15:33, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Frzzl That is interesting! Do you have any data on how biography percentages may have changed over the past few years? Personally, I like how WIG has included women's works in its tracking (it provides another angle for editors to get involved in the project), but most of our participants' work still ends up focused on biographies. Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Grnrchst -- Grnrchst (talk) 13:22, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk
The article Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. Running late
Hello! I nominated The Fall of Language in the Age of English for GA on 25 October, since someone suggested doing that for the October Women in Green editathon. It's under review. But I forgot to add myself and the article to the WIG page somehow. Can I still get in there and be counted? If not, no worries, I just like boosting the totals where I can. Thanks for your work on the edit-a-thon! Indignant Flamingo (talk) 06:31, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Indignant Flamingo: Thanks for reaching out! I think we can sneak in your nomination -- I've added your name and article to the editathon results list, and I see you've already added it to our 2023 Goals page (perfect). If you'd like to receive notices about future WIG events, you're also welcome to add your name to our list of project members. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:25, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk
The article Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk for comments about the article, and Talk:Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. DYK for Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk
On 26 November 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after learning to write with Inuktitut syllabics to help Catholic missionaries learn her language, Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk wrote one of the first Inuktitut-language novels? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
