I will answer requests here, if you post them here. I mostly concentrate on Africa based articles.
Township Category
I've renamed the category as suggested. --Mohau 10:05, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Township is defined as a residential development which confined non-whites (Africans, "coloureds" and Indians) who lived near or worked in white-only communities.
Residential developments that were developed for non-whites would be in the list, but any other residential development that did not have the same racial confines will not be included. --Mohau 13:32, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- I am a little uncomfortable categorizing them based on race. Where is the 'new' South Africa ? Wizzy…☎ 06:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- They are categorized on intent and not current status. There are a few non-whites residing in these residential developments currently, so they are no longer confined to race, but the original intent was just that.
- Just to bring my point to perspective, there are residential areas that were earmarked for whites and post 1994, when non whites started buying into these areas, white people literally moved out and currently these areas are occupied by non-whites. These residential areas would not be categorized as township. Hope that makes sense... --Mohau 06:56, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Proxies (hopefully sorted now)
I've sent an email to Tim Starling (according to meta:XFF project), with the details of the proxies, and he replied that they have been whitelisted. So hopefully everything's sorted out now. dewet|™ 08:27, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Great! I presume the proxies do the X-Forwarded-From ? Did you check ? Wizzy…☎ 08:32, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I checked using another proxy-detecting-website; they pass my real IP on. I've also verified in the sandbox that my IP shows up, so everything seems hunky-dory. dewet|™ 02:38, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

A laugh a minute (well, almost)
Well, considering yourself African does not mean you belong to a "tribe". In the same way that being a US rapper does not mean you are a nigger. Beware of colonialist divide-and-conquer theories when dealing with African issues. Speaking of which, could you perhaps take a look at what I dumped at Talk:Bantu languages yesterday? Be sure to tell all your friends about it... Please alert me on my talk page when you respond. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 14:25, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

WPCD
Hi Andy, regarding the WDCD template you're adding, does the template automatically add these to a category page, do you know? I tried to follow what was being added from "what links here," but it doesn't list pages in alphabetical order, so it's hard to use, whereas the category list would be alphabetical. Any information gratefully received. :-) SlimVirgin (talk) 13:50, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- SV, The Talk page is added to [[Category:Wikipedia CD Selection]]. The project page mentions it, but perhaps the template itself should mention it directly? Wizzy…☎ 13:54, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

WP1.0, CD and WP0.5
Hi Wizzy,
Hey, thank you so much for getting the WPCD template out there, that's really helpful! Can I take it that you would be interested in helping with the next version of that collection?
Thanks also for signing up to help out with WP:V0.5. I was thinking of opening up the V0.5 nominations page on Thursday to start accepting nominations, what do you think? Will you be around to help in the next few weeks? Would you be able to help review articles for it? I have contacted Maurreen and Tito directly as well, they are currently the active folks associated with this, though I hope that more will join us once we get up & running. Let me know your opinion. Thanks again for all your help, Walkerma 02:43, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Hello again, I notice that you have been busy with the {{WPCD}} template, and I saw your mention of downloading category listings. Have you thought about using the bot to do this sort of thing for you? The main listing is here, and there is a guide to adding a project to the listing. I'll also post something on the project page. I hope, too, that you can help review articles for us at WP:V0.5N when you get a chance. South Africa has already been passed! Cheers, Walkerma 01:27, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- I want to try and turn out a CD myself, just to get through the whole process once. I like Bozmo's CD, but its just not big enough! I converted it to plucker format, and its only 40Meg - I would like one 10x that size. I am not as picky as he is either - even though schools are a target of mine as well. I am thinking along the following lines :-
- Start with a current xml dump - 89% now, I should have it all tomorrow.
- Get used to the xml tools, like mwdumper. I can cut down the dump to just the list in a file - that list is the WPCD category dump.
- I need the category listings to work on the CD.
- Post-processing on the dump - remove 'red-linked' article markup. I think I will leave External Links - they can be useful.
- Count highly inter-referenced pages that are not in my selection - consider adding a proportion.
- List all images referenced in the dump. Figure out how to get just those pictures out of the impossibly-sized image tarballs - maybe by getting them directly via Export or something.
I have the mediawiki software, so I can re-create a server with just those articles. I have (a quite old) picture archive, that might save me some time. Maybe a combination of my own server and some pybot tools will allow me to experiment ? Wizzy…☎ 13:27, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry I took a while to follow up. I know that User:BozMo can do a lot of the cleanup that you mention, though I dare say you knew that! If you want a bigger list, try looking at Wikipedia:Concise, though I notice that WPCD is getting much bigger now (Bozmo said around 4500 to me recently). At some point soon we will need to set up a sub-project at WP:1.0 to handle all of these sorts of issues, would you be willing to be involved with that? I realise that Version 0.5 may only be small, but I think things will begin to grow rapidly once we begin to produce CDs. Let us know how you get on. Thanks, Walkerma 04:35, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Static content notes : do you have time to engage in running discussions about how to generate static content snapshots of WP, et al? I'm helping start a static content working group, and working with people designing a small-footprint snapshot for the One Laptop per Child machines... would love your expertise, wish-lists, and other input. +sj + 00:12, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Very much so. I have a procedure down - which includes categories - yaay. I now have to make pictures work (without downloading the entire tarball): not present on my snapshot, they all register as upload links. I think I need to figure out the hashing algorithm, and pick them up individually. I must also figure out the cleanup scripts, to remove interwiki links and other dross, like See also links that do not exist in the snapshot. Wizzy…☎ 11:48, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Libya
Hi,
I've recently added Libya to the list of featured article candidates. Overall the candidature is going well with many of the objections now sorted out. The final concrete objection is with the article's prose. I have been the main contributor to the article and have been looking at it for the previous 9 - 10 months. My eyes no longer see it freshly, so I am not a suitable copy-editor!
To meet the final demand of copy editing, I have been advised to ask different people to edit parts of the article.
I would really love to get this article featured as you can probably see from the page's history! I've worked very hard on it and I see this as possibly being the final hurdle.
You can see the prose objections, mostly raised by Sandy, on the candidature page. If you have the time, please choose a section (Politics, Religion, Culture etc.) and copyedit, perfect, ace it! I would be very grateful with any help I can get.
Thanks a lot,
P.S. I see you have the coveted Africa award. Would you much rather have this : )

Back to Barack
Hey Wizzy. I've been working on Barack Obama these last days and was hoping you'd consider cleaning up and condensing the Africa section there (where I see you'd contributed earlier), to take it from a kind of rolling newsfeed to a more encyclopedic tone. As yet, there is no detailed mention of the HIV test or the Chad visit and Darfur isssues. Would be great for our global Wikipedia if some of the key references cited come from the local press. Others who can lend a hand are also welcome. There's loads of material about it on the official Obama sites (listed at the bottom of the article), and "Obama"+anything is a googler's paradise. Thanks in advance.--HailFire 23:36, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for you edits, good stuff, much appreciated! I thought the stage version of Dreams from My Father was an interesting story, but think you did right to remove it and add more detail about the tensions with the Kenyan government (maybe insert those lines in the article dedicated to the book?). A good balance showing the Kenya visit was not all happy talk. --HailFire 15:29, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Torrent project
You have (I dl'd) a Palm-compatable format of BozMo's 2006 Wikipedia CD Selection. Are you are planning to do this with future releases? Interest in distributing a Palm version was expressed here. If OK with you, The torrent project could take the version you have made available by ftp and pass it along the channels the project works in. Do you know if this is already on eD2K or in the Kad Network? (I searched for wikipedia.pdb and wikipedia palm in eMule and found a similar but larger prc file). -- Paleorthid 17:58, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Certainly you can 'torrent' the palm version. Yes, I want to do the same for the next CD. I have personally already got BozMo's wpcd2 on my Palm - text only, though. The python script plucker-build that I use needs huge amounts of RAM - I will have to borrow a machine with at least 2Gig RAM to create the palm version of wpcd2. Wizzy…☎ 07:24, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Our list is pretty much complete, we've done a lot of checks with AWB and the like to catch all the missing/broken tags, etc. We just need to see if any articles need the older version rather than the current one. We should hear from Emmanuel tomorrow about what Pascal's demo can offer. By the way, I thought (on IRC) pm27 was joking when he said his server was Windows based - this is the copy from my log:
- <andy1> pm27 - quelle OS ? Linux ?
- <pm27> windows :)
- <pm27> no debian
- <andy1> Thanks - I want the process, not the result

No, it does not. A student using a browser to read the CD will not be able to use the reader search index. Wizzy
I think pm27 was not referring to his software, he was referring to his working machine/server. Going through Emmanuel's document, this is a rough googly translation of the relevant sections :-
Portability
We need free multiplatform software:
- x86 & IA-64 /Win32
- x86 & IA-64 /Linux
- x86 & PPC /OSX
Accessibility
The software must reach the most level of accessibility. In its contents generated by the software, like the search results page [...]. Thus the software will have rigorously to satisfy chapter 12 (assistance with navigation) while the chapter 13 (contents accessible) is the responsibility of the content provider.
Localization
This software must make it possible to be easily localisable.
Technologies
This software must be based on XPFE.
- It should not use any server, even local.
Installation
The installation must:
- provide the choice of a minimal/maximum installation on the hard disk.
- provide the choice of installation path.
- install an icon in the menu of access to the programs, or on the desk (by choice).
Licence
All the provided code must be under licence LPG version 2.
- All software modules necessary to its correct operation
- must be compatible with the LPG version 2.
Delivery
The delivery must comprise for all the systems/architectures:
- The source code of the program with accompanying notes.
- the functional program (with fr.wikipedia.org like contents).
- An installer for Windows.
- an image for Mac.
- All scripts allowing the production of the program with its contents, also their documentation.
- User documentation of the product.
It all looks great, but all requires software to be installed. I don't want to nix their work, but I also want access with just a browser. Wizzy…☎ 13:05, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for this! Thanks too on the clarification of reader (Win) vs. server (Debian), I guess I was getting a bit confused. I agree with your final comment, but if there's room to include it on the CD, we can let the user make the choice. If it's a computer-savvy teenager with a 3 GHz processor and 1GB RAM, they will happily try out the free offline reader. If it's someone in a remote village school using a 486 computer (hey, even my lawyer here in Potsdam, New York still uses one!), then maybe they could use a basic browser. That may mean they can't do searches, but they should be able to use the alphabetical list and the article tree (which I plan to write soon). What about a javascript file - do we have one? Does BozMo? How would the HTML summary page work as an index - would you use the "Find in this page" feature in Firefox? If you can manage to download the huge file of Pascal's, please let me know what you think. Walkerma 17:04, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Hope (and trust) the weather is a bit better where you are. Several things: the 0.5 plus images has been grabbed and put up here: http://wikipedia-release-version-0.5.fixedreference.org/ and our 2007 list (which is much longer) is at http://2007-wikipedia-cd-selection.fixedreference.org/wp/index/alpha.htm
Also to let you know about Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/2006_Wikipedia_CD_Selection. The current marginal majority to move the page to Wikipedia space. This makes some sense but practically far fewer people will ever see the CD releases if we always put them in project place (the internal search on Wikipedia excludes project pages) and I think there is enough notability now to make the case...--BozMo talk 11:57, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Changes planned are listed at Wikipedia:2006 Wikipedia CD Selection in terms of (1) articles currently included to exclude (2)articles to add (3) articles to update because the version listed is vandalised (4) sections to exclude (mainly on appropriateness to children) (5) string deletes and spelling corrections (to UK English) (6) redirects of common article names to the main article. Most proposals are coming to me by email (which is a bit easier to manage, so please do) but suggestions on the article page or discussion pages are also useful. Navigation and search pages are being sorted separately. --BozMo talk 14:04, 16 March 2007 (UTC) PS Plan is to download with thumbnails but offer a DVD with full images. I guess I could mail you the DVD...--BozMo talk 14:05, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Submarines
Hey Wizzy. I'm kinda perplexed about the message as I'm not sure what exactly needs to be fixed up. So far as I can see, the details are correct. — Impi 14:01, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

2007 CD
See http://schools-wikipedia.org we are closing the gate on changes in 48 hours. It will be available on DVD with full images (3.5 GB) or as a download with thumbnails only. Are the shuttleworth foundation interested? The Wikimedia Foundation want to do a press release when we kick off and it would be nice to say anything if you intend to but look first. The search bit is the main outstanding improvement.
Talk to me! Happy to post to you guys of course. --BozMo talk 18:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- BozMo - fine job! Do I 'spider' the site, or is there a download link ? 48 hours is a little tight to get a response from TSF. I am very interested to see your search facility. What I want (and TSF) is content we can put on a website (local to the school, on their server) and browse. Does your search facility work in that scenario ? If you could post one to me, at this address, that would be great! Wizzy…☎ 19:47, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- Wait 48 hours (please) and there'll be a link download for the zipped up thumbnail only version (there are still known errors to correct). But if you want the 3.5 GB version email me an address and I'll post it (in principle its free for anyone who turns up and asks). I would rather this than botting please (we have 500GB bandwidth so we don't get many at 3.5 GB a pop) The search we are still thinking about. Full text search ain't much use unless you have some algo for the more important links (there is a huge amount of text: I didn't like the Release version search). I think we are likely to go with a title and redirect index search only (like http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/index/a.htm but prettier) not a content search. Actually the redirects seems to make it much better since it tends to include the common terms people are looking for (the current version has the redirect under the alt tag). On the disk anyway whatever we do will be static HTML pages. --BozMo talk 20:02, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- Do post me a copy - address in link above. I think it should be a text search, of at least the first paragraph. It is too late, I know, but I think categories are also very useful/important. Wizzy…☎ 20:37, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

- Do though please look at http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/index/subject.htm which is entirely designed to help people with school content. It works as a cat tree (so things are double listed). It matches school syllabus content.
- PS can still add articles until tomorrow if there's anything you badly want in. --BozMo talk 20:08, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Wizzy thanks. My email on WP does work: other people use it all the time. The Torrent download has a problem I think (because people are struggling to unzip the file: size too big). I have put up a different compressed file but am doing a complete check through of download process before flagging it and I will post you the DVD whenever you want. Election notice: Your endorsement
Hi! You have endorsed one of the candidates in the current board elections. However, you have not provided a link from your local project (this one) to your user page on Meta, so we have no way of confirming that you are the same person. Please provide a link to Meta from your user page or user talk page to Meta, then reinstate your endorsement, which I struck and indented. If you like to have your user page in a certain way, you can do it in a diff, like this, but then you have to provide the link to the diff for us. Thank you for your cooperation! DRV for "Truth in Numbers: The Wikipedia Story"
Dear Wizzy, this upcoming Wikidocmentary film article is currently under discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review on today, because a recent decision to retain it on Wikipedia has been appealed and it is in progress in reaching an ultimate consensus. You may wish to support for restoration by contributing it to the review. Since you had involved into it in regards to this upcoming Wikidocumentary film by Nic Hill, so please do help out and try not to hesitate to voice out your advocated opinion! Otherwise without you commenting about it, this article would never had existed. Pole Heinz Tower 14:31, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Me being involved in the film doesn't make it any more wiki-worthy, I am afraid. Just because the film is about wikipedia also doesn't make it more wiki-worthy, nor even the JW knows the film. I say wait until it is released. Wizzy…☎ 06:48, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Chris Hani and Rhodes University
I'm afraid you were mistaken about Chris Hani and I have reverted the articles to previous edits. According to National Heritage Council, Africa Files and Chris Hani's biography on the South African Communist Party website [4] he was expelled from Fort Hare University and graduated from Rhodes University. --Cazo3788 16:10, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- Great. I think it would be better if you added those references first to the Chris Hani article - as I thought you were suggesting that Fort Hare graduates become Rhodes grads. Wizzy…☎ 16:17, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Salisbury redirects
I appreciate your comments, and the fact that you think the redirect should point at Salisbury, UK - not to Harare. I do however think my comments should remain, if someone is claiming that I have been using expletives and I am breaking various wikipedia rules, then I feel I should at least put my side of it, otherwise people will assume, that all I have been doing is insulting the editor, without making any attempts to discuss the issue. I dont want people to think Ive been saying things along the lines of 'change the fu***ng redirect, you idiot' when I did try very hard to discuss this with him.
Out of respect, I will not put the comments back in, without waiting for a response from you, if there is a good reason, as to why I shouldnt put the comments in there again, of course I am more than willing to listen to your opinion.
Right now, I feel my comments should go back, but then again, my opinion is not always 100% perfect, so lets wait and see. thanks Sennen goroshi 07:37, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Your comments probably should go back. Perspicacite has been a good contributor to Zimbabwe-related pages (which is how I know him/her) and I am keen that he remain so. If you are concerned, maybe a middle road is to note the edit somewhere. Life is short, and there are better things to do than get into disputes in cyberspace. Wizzy…☎ 08:16, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- I will re-write my concerns, in a manner that seems a little less aggresive. I can say exactly what I want to, but maybe using a little tact and diplomacy would be nice.Sennen goroshi 08:41, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Wiktionary on Plucker Format?

Snoqualmie Pass photo
The photo you added to the Snoqualmie Pass page is nice, but I do not believe it is actually from Snoqualmie Pass. There are 2 major problems with this to be a SP photo. First, the railroad tracks shown on the photo are below the road. The Milwaukee Road rail lines were never located near the road anywhere on Snoqualmie Pass, especially below the road. Also the lack of trees makes this photo appear to be taken in Eastern WA, possibly near Ellensburg. It might be a photo on Highway 10 'on the way to' Snoqualmie Pass, but it could not have been taken on Snoqualmie Pass. Mrhyak 14:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- I have never been there. The credit for the picture says :- Vehicles line up on the ascent to Snoqualmie Pass in 1946. Photograph by a Seattle Post-Intelligencer photographer, donated to the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, and provided by the University of Washington Digital Collections. Perhaps check with them ? I found it in Commons - I will not object if you remove it. Wizzy…☎ 18:04, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
419 debate at Nigeria
You know, how can I get Aji to stop the massive dumps of text - his comments are hard to read through... and IMO I feel they are not necessarily long... more like long for long's sake. BTW he disputes what you are saying. Some anon signed up, but I don't know if it is Aji or someone else. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:29, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Please note the following:
- My comments are not intentionally long. I have merely taken the effort to clearly state my reasoning in order to minimise the very back and forth that has occurred here. If you take the time to read them, hopefully you would understand that.
- The anon is someone else - I object to the implication that I would use an anonymous entry to support, what I feel, is a clearly articulated, and strong argument. Ajisekanla (talk) 17:00, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- I am sorry if I implied it was a sockpuppet. That was not my intention. Wizzy…☎ 10:26, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

References
You wrote this in an edit summary: "http://allafrica.com/stories/200804110823.html - I am not putting ref in page because allafrica expires news to its pay site" Please put references like this regardless of whether they will become pay-only after a length of time. A reference is still a reference even if there's a barrier to access; it is likewise perfectly acceptable to cite off-line books and journals. Any kind of reference is better than no reference at all (however, if a more accessible reference can be found, it should be used instead, or in addition). Everyking (talk) 20:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
Please take the time to rewrite the info you add from references; it's a copyvio to just copy-paste. I think maybe you do change it somewhat sometimes, but a lot of sentences seem to be taken verbatim from the source. Otherwise, I appreciate your help on the election article. Everyking (talk) 03:44, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Wizzy. Thanks so much for spotting the inadvertent pong among my 'consistency' edits! Because the article is quite long, I became harried into going on and on, and then having to rush. It's a great article, but a pity it's marred by lack of proper citations. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 21:58, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Mzoli Ngcawuzele
A tag has been placed on Mzoli Ngcawuzele requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. andy (talk) 11:52, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Photo request
Hi, I'd like to ask you to do something if it is possible. The Spirit of Mystery is currently docked in Cape Town and I need someone to take a photograph of it and upload it to Wikipedia so that it can be used in the article. I did post a request at WP:SAFRICA but have had no response there. Don't worry if you are unable to do this for any reason, it's not a big thing. Mjroots (talk) 19:32, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Fatima Hajaig
Her comments talk about Jews! Where in the quote or the recording is the word Zionist????
Not all Jews are Zionists, so why use the headline "Comments about Zionists."
- I used that because in her (lame) apology, she said that is what she meant. Wizzy…☎ 15:02, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Every the foreign minister realised she was talking about Jews...hence her condemnation.
Maybe you arent up to speed on World War II, but her comments are EXACTLY the same as is documented in just about every history book about the Nazi view of Jews. I can cite any one of thousands of these books if you wish to transpose her comments to the Nazi era.
Besides which, why else would the Sunday Times say "Heil Hajaig!?" —Preceding unsigned comment added by Qwerty084 (talk • contribs) 14:48, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Read WP:LIVING - it is very important in this case. You are making the connection between what she said and Goebbels, you can't do that, it is called WP:OR. I don't know why the Sunday Times say "Heil Hajaig!" - its not my problem. You are not going to make Hajaig any muddier by throwing in Nazi references, it just makes you/us look like idiots. Just the facts, Ma'am. And - BTW - well done finding that December meeting comment - that was good. Wizzy…☎ 15:01, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
