WP:ALT The purpose of alt text is to stand in for an image. Consequently, "Cover of x album" is unacceptable alt text, because this doesn't tell me what I'm missing. "A blue-tinted black-and-white photograph of Coltrane's face looking to the left, with the logo "A Love Supreme/John Coltrane" written in white bold Arial across the top." is useful, on the other hand. == WikiCup 2012 May newsletter ==

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is , whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, , is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by , our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, , claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. == Template:Anticon ==

Hi J04n, As one of the parties involved in this issue, I am slightly surprised by some of your actions. There seems to be a quite experienced Wikipedia editor using revolving anonymous IPs to create and edit this template (so much so that some might regard it as trolling). I had responded by reporting one of the IPs for edit warring and had also requested temporary semi-protection for the article.

As a consensus already exists as to the inclusion of non-links (Unlinked text) in templates Wikipedia:Navigation templates which I fully explained on the talk page, I commented that I considered adding the non-links back to the template would be vandalism, and so I reverted this users edits from that point.

I'm glad that calm has now returned to the template, but I don't really know how else I could respond to a determined anonymous IP who wants to enforce his point of view while ignoring all the comments of the other editors involved? memphisto 15:01, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

As an update, User:118.8.2.54 has now been temporarily banned after reporting me for edit warring on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. memphisto 10:45, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

:I'm sorry that you took issue with the way I handled this situation. Let me explain my thinking: The IP was acting emotionally, I hoped that protecting the template from editing by anyone would calm him down and a constructive conversation would take place. He is very much a newbie, he took the time to learn how to make a navbox, my goal was that he would calm down and become a productive long-term editor. Again, I'm sorry if you took offense, it was not my intention. <font face="Century Gothic">J04n(talk page)</font> 12:30, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply J04n. I'm very unsure about the newbie bit - can a newbie create a complete navbox as their first Wikipedia edit, quote Wikipedia policies on the fly and have no difficulty reporting me for edit warring (I however ballsed up the form on multiple occasions when reporting one of their IPs!). Due to the fact that they had ignored all the advice that had been given by other editors, I had hoped that if my request for temporary semi-protection had been approved it would have encouraged the user to register an account, and we could have progressed from there. memphisto 13:13, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

More Template:Anticon
Thanks for protecting Template:Anticon. The IP uses different IP ranges, and while I do try to WP:AGF, they seems to know enough to game the system (even seems to intentionally switch IPs after three reverts to avoid WP:3RR, but maybe it's my paranoia). We have very similar issues at Genghis Tron and most likely Sole and the Skyrider Band, can you please protect them too, maybe temporarily? WP:RFP was also made for the former. --Muhandes (talk) 19:23, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter
Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's , who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's , whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's , with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Thanks for uploading :File:Gitarzan (album).jpeg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. ==DiCesare Engler==
Hey J04n, I just wondered if you could take a look at a new article I'm in the process of having approved. It's on concert promoters DiCesare Engler. It's in my sandbox. == Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested) ==

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

* Link to Survey (should take between 5-10 minutes): http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N8FQ6MM

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t &#124; c 17:20, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
