Message for Ian Thomson from Brendan Connolly re. addition of external links to www.thenaturalreligion.org in the "Religion", "Natural Religion", and "Philosophy of Religion" Wikipedia pages:

Dear Ian,

I see your point on not being able to include everyone's personal take on such a contentious topic as religion in Wikipedia.

I take it that Wikipedia aims to give an overview of a particular topic. And yes, my conclusions on religion are the result of my own research, predominantly in the general area of human ecology. I do feel, however, that the link I suggested leads to a considered analysis of what religion is and why it exists. And as such, it makes the description of religion in Wikipedia more complete.

However, if an analysis or discussion on any topic needs a certain minimum number of people taking part in it before it can be included in Wikipedia, then my link may not appear have reached that level, and hence be classed as one or a few people's opinions or a blog. This does stifle the progression of ideas a bit of course, but then, maybe Wikipedia's role is to report after the thinking is done and is recognized by a large number of people.

My justification for suggesting these external links is that there are, in fact, many thousands of people who recognize that ethics and morals do not necessarily need supernatural beliefs as a basis, and this is part of how religion has developed up to now.

Kind regards,

87.232.113.54 (talk) 09:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC) Brendan Connolly87.232.113.54 (talk) 09:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

See WP:NOR, we do not accept original research. Also, see WP:EL for our standards of what links are or are not accepted, and WP:RS for what are considered reliable sources. You have provided no evidence that your blog is recognized as authoratative by the "many thousands of people who recognize that ethics and morals do not necessarily need supernatural beliefs as a basis.". Those people existing has no connection to your blog and it is a bit presumptuous to call on them like you're the deist pope. Hiya Ian, first, I figured I'd let you know I'm borrowing (via linking) this to point people to your rather detailed explanation on the matter. Kudos. And second, assuming you've got no objections, I'm adding you to my watchlist - I find your contributions insightful. Makes it easier for me to learn others' perspectives so I can (hopefully) avoid inserting any bias I may (or may not) have by balancing it with others' perspectives. So, I guess take it as a compliment. :-) Best, Rob <span style="border:1px solid #100;padding:1px;"><small>R<small>OBERT</small>M<small>FROM</small>LI </small>&#124;<small> TK/CN</small></span> 22:36, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Asherah edit
I'd like to know what I implied that the other sources referenced in the article and other articles on Wikipedia don't. I see nothing wrong that I did to break the guidelines; I am restoring my edit, and no, I don't think you should be an admin, by the way. I'll source it as best I can, when I can. If you'd like to split hairs, be my guest, but nothing I said or "implied" there was false and your decision to reprimand me for doing "original research" was wrong on the grounds that no such original research was made. In ancient Ugaritic tradition, Asherah was the queen of Heaven, the wife/consort of El, and the highest goddess in the pantheon. But I'll leave that line out until I can get a source, since I suspect that this is what you're angry about; the rest stays, and I will ask an admin to intervene to decide if you revert me again. Best.

hello ian (13 tablets)
it took me 10 minutes to put up that page! :) can you give me more information on how you know for sure that it is fabricated? Odarcan (talk) 20:14, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
:The Atlantis claim is a big red flag. Also, it's on Doreal to prove that he didn't fabricate it, and he has yet to allow other scholars to look at the original "Atlantean" text. That he's publishing his translation through "Brotherhood of the White Temple" instead of an academic or scholarly institution, or through a peer-reviewed historical journal, shows that he's just trying to rip off unquestioning new-agers. Ian.thomson (talk) 20:19, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
:: it's ok to write about deities, but not Atlantis? ok to write about texts claiming to be from hermes trismegistus, but not if it also says Atlantis? What if the book was presented in the article as fiction? can it be mentioned in wikipedia and other articles then? like emerald tablet and thoth page?Odarcan (talk) 20:26, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
:::Not an accurate comparison. The Thoth article describes what people believed about Thoth, and it remains agnostic to his existence because it is not testable. The Corpus Hermeticum and Bible articles are agnostic to the existence of the deities behind them (again, untestable), but not to, say, their composition dates (which is testable). We do include what appears to be the date of composition of those works, even if it is counter to what the believers think (see Talk:Bible right now for a recent example of this).
:::The existence of Atlantis is testable, and it has failed any scientific test to demonstrate its existence. So, mainstream scholarship does not recognize it as having existed, therefore Wikipedia does not either.
:::If Doreal's book were allowed, it would have to be presented as something he wrote. BUT, a subject must be notable before it is considered worthy of an article. Right now, none of the sites linked in the article qualify as reliable sources. You really need secondary sources independant of the subject, which details mainstream scholarship about the book. The use of fringe sources is restricted to pretty much describing what the fringe subject says about itself; but this does not take precedence over what mainstream scholarship says about the subject. Thanks very much for your false accusations and time wasting in calling me a sock puppet. I very much appreciate it. Next time I suggest that adhere to logic and perhaps ask yourself whether it's possible that more than one person can share the same opinion? The fact that you were called a socialist by someone else apart from me shouldn't lead you to make stark assumptions? Yours faithfully, excused sockpuppet. Alexandre8 (talk) 22:06, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
:That's odd, you pretty much quit editing on this site (only 3 edits since you were "done" here) until that IP addressed was blocked for continuing the same activities with the same arguments that lead to your last block. Also odd that the sock didn't bother to ask for an unblock on the grounds of not being you. If it wasn't you, why don't you head over to WP:SPI, refile the report, and ask for a checkuser? If you're not currently engaged in sockpuppetry (as you have been in the past), I suppose you wouldn't have anything to fear. I am not apologizing, seeing how you've gotten in trouble for sockpuppetry in the past, and that three other editors thought the behavior was identical (not just calling me a socialist, but identifying a dating system with an economic theory and going after articles with the intention of removing this "socialist" dating system, and then making the "why don't you just rename the days of the week" argument). I don't want an apology, I simply wish to highlight that the duck policy should not always be adhered to. If you checked the account that was blocked in the end you will see it was someone copying me. Alexandre87 I think his name was. So it's very likely that if it's a copycat account, it's going to be someone trying to imitate my point of view. I haven't edited because I'm busy with my academic research. I thought your suggestion of a merge of what WP:RS there is to Christian Reconstructionism made sense. In ictu oculi (talk) 03:57, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

I forget what random path took me to your page - but you seem to know a lot about Christianity and its history. Maybe you are competent to comment on the name used for the Szekler Sabbatarians, see my comment in Talk:Szekler_Sabbatarians. :I'm striking out your mistaken vandalism warning: see WP:NOTVAND. Also, several editors have reinstated that section in good-faith because it is sourced information. ==Help needed for a student class project==
Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination/SFSU Class Project and consider adding your name.

The scope of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination/SFSU Class Project is mainly concerned with new articles.

According to the teacher's instructions, this group of students may not create a lot of new articles, but may instead focus more on improving existing articles.

So, there may be little for us to do in the way the Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project required. The students may, however, still call on us for guidance in other areas. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:15, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
:I'm not sure if I'll be of much help. What little I managed with the NNU was backing up soon-to-be-deleted articles in userspace. Ian.thomson (talk) 14:26, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ian!

How do I a) post a tilde symbol on a Mac computer? b) how exactly do I sign my name to an edit? Do I just copy and paste this as my signature? " Brotherrog (talk) 17:28, 14 October 2011 (UTC) " Do I need to type Roger Wolsey next to those symbols? Can you please type out an example in detail?

Thanks!

Brotherrog (talk) 17:28, 14 October 2011 (UTC) Roger Wolsey

:I'm afraid I'm not a Mac user, but looking on Google, it appears all you need to do is type Alt + N. Signatures are just four ~'s, you don't need to type your name. Ian.thomson (talk) 17:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I agree. An encyclopedia has to be about reliable sources. I like your User/Talk page and I am borrowing part of the format for my talk page. Cheers. - Ret.Prof (talk) 13:00, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
