Qualifying

[edit]

Qualifying took place on May 3.[2] In his 17th Nationwide race, former X Games star Travis Pastrana clinched the pole with a lap speed of 176.500 miles per hour (284.049 km/h), his first career NASCAR pole and the first for owner Jack Roush at Talladega.[3] Pastrana stated, “It sounds like a dream come true. Bringing the guys to the line at the green flag at Talladega is awesome, so I’m definitely excited."[4] Austin Dillon (176.162 mph (283.505 km/h)), Trevor Bayne (176.071 mph (283.359 km/h)), Danica Patrick (175.877 mph (283.047 km/h)), Justin Allgaier (175.868 mph (283.032 km/h)), Sam Hornish Jr. (175.771 mph (282.876 km/h)), Elliott Sadler (175.771 mph (282.876 km/h)), Brian Scott (175.587 mph (282.580 km/h)), Kurt Busch (175.52 mph (282.47 km/h)) and Joey Coulter (175.33 mph (282.17 km/h)) rounded out the top ten. Stanton Barrett (170.561 mph (274.491 km/h)) and John Wes Townley failed to qualify; despite qualifying in tenth, Townley's time was disallowed after his car was found to be too low,[5] and Tim Andrews replaced him on the grid.[6] Townley eventually took over for Jeff Green's TriStar Motorsports car.[7]
