Operation Red Sea (Chinese: 红海行动) is a 2018 Chinese-Hong Kong action war film directed by Dante Lam. Written by Feng Ji, Chen Zhuzhu and Lin Mingjie. Produced by Bona Film Group Limited, Chinese People's Liberation Army Naval Affairs Television Art Center. The film features an ensemble cast including Zhang Yi, Huang Jingyu, Hai Qing and Du Jiang. Released on February 16, 2018 in Mainland China[1], March 1, 2018 in Hongkong China.

The film tells about the evacuation of foreign nationals and almost 600 Chinese citizens from Yemen's southern port of Aden during late March in 2015 Yemeni Civil War.

It serves as the highlight film presented to audiences as a gift for the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, as well as the party's 19th National Congress. This film is said to be "China's first modern naval film". The film has grossed USD$579 million, and received critical acclaim from critics, making it currently the seventh-highest-grossing ever in China and highest grossing Chinese film in 2018. It was selected as the Hong Kong entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. According to Chinaculture.org, the film is in similar style to that of Operation Mekong.

Plot

Operation Red Sea tells the story of a Chinese soldier team, receiving a national mission to evacuate overseas Chinese, and seize nuclear resources from terrorists. In an offshore area, a Chinese merchant ship was robed and captured. Jiaolong succeeded in rescuing all the hostages from the enemy. On the way home, they received a national mission to the African Republic of Evia for the evacuation of Chinese nationals. Their team of eight men, against all difficulties, succeeded in transferring the Chinese waiting at the dock. They also had a fierce struggle with terrorists and finally succeeded in rescuing the Chinese consulate stuff.[2]

Dante Lam, born in Hong Kong on July 1, 1965, is a Male director from Hong Kong, China.[3]

In 2018, he directed the military action film Operation Red Sea. For this film won the 34th Popular Film Hundred Flowers Award best Director award. In April , 2019, he won the Best Action Design Award at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. Dante Lam accepts the Award for Best Director for "Operation Red Sea" at the awarding ceremony of the 28th China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival [2] and the 32nd Golden Rooster Awards in Beijing, Nov 23, 2019. More than 10 countries, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany, have closed their embassies and asked their citizens to leave The country as tensions in Yemen have escalated since 2014. Since March 26, 2015, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states including Egypt, Jordan and Sudan have joined an international coalition to launch military operations against The Houthis in Yemen. Tensions have flared in Yemen following airstrikes by Saudi Arabia and other countries. Since March 27, 2015, the Chinese naval fleet has temporarily suspended escort missions in the Gulf of Aden. This is the first time that the Chinese navy has "suspended" its escort mission in the Gulf of Aden since the end of 2008. A Chinese warship docked at the Yemeni port of Aden on Monday to evacuate Chinese citizens, Reuters reported Late Thursday, citing yemeni port officials. On March 29, 2015, the frigate linyi of the Chinese naval escort taskforce docked in The Yemeni port of Aden to evacuate Chinese citizens. On March 30, the frigate Weifang of the Chinese naval escort taskforce, carrying 449 Chinese citizens, safely withdrew from the port of Hodeida in western Yemen. So far, all 571 Chinese citizens who need to be evacuated have been safely evacuated from Yemen. The United States acknowledged on April 6 that it was unable to help citizens in Yemen leave the country. The United States wants its citizens in Yemen to leave by sea on foreign ships because of the closure of the country's airports.[6]

Yang Rui (Zhang Yi)

Yang Rui is the captain of the Jiaolong Commando with a firm personality and a courteous personality. After completing the task of driving away the pirates, he received the evacuation action instructed by the superior, and led the Jiaolong commando to the Republic of Ivia in northern Africa to perform the task, and finally successfully completed the task.[7]

Gu Shun (Huang Jingyu)

Gu Shun is the sniper of Jiaolong Commando. Gu Shun replaced the injured original Jiaolong sniper Luo Xing with observer Li Dong to jointly carry out the Red Sea Operation mission. Gu Shun has an arrogant personality, strong psychological quality, calm and composed on the battlefield, and likes to chew gum to maintain a fighting state. [8]

Xia Nan (Hai Qing)

Xu Hong (Du Jiang)

Xu Hong is the Vice-captain and demonman of Jiaolong Commando. He is a bomb disposal expert who assists Captain Yang Rui in this evacuation operation.[9]

Tong Li (Jiang Luxia)

Tong Li is the machine gunner of Jiaolong Commando. She is the only woman in the team. During the task of rescuing the hostages, be responsible for escorting the target characters away.[10]

Gao Yun (Zhang Yuhan)

Gao Yun is the captain of Linyi.

Zhang Tiande (Wang Yutian)

Operation Red Sea is the theme song of the film Operation Red Sea with the same title. It is written and composed by Cui Bo, and sung by Zhang Yi, Huang Jingyu, Du Jiang, Jiang Luxia, Yin Fang, Wang Yutian, Guo Jiahao, Henry Prince Mak. This song is published in January 9 2018. [14]

Digital Album

Elliot Leung composed the score to Operation Red Sea, and a digital album consisting of 22 tracks was released two weeks prior to the Chinese premiere on February 2. A limited edition, autographed by both Elliot Leung and Dante Lam was given out only to those who were invited to the film premiere.
