As of 26 February 2018 by the decision of emperor PL:Józef II Habsburg the Podgórze settlement became the free royal city. 1st city plan was created showing brick buildings - amond these were 3 buildings owned by Józef Haller of which 2 are at present museum buildings. Merchant's houses consisted of the mail building and two small outbuildings. In the year 1838 1st cadastral plan for Podgórze was created marking the buildings on today's museum building plot.[1]
In mid 19th century at museum's main building was a military hospital and later at the beginig of 20th cenutyr was used as altylery warehouse and artillery workshops.
On 31 October 1918 military barracks were mastered by a unit under the command of second lieutenant Franciszek Pustelnik, becoming one of the first liberated buildings in Poland. In the World War II the building was a branch of St. Michael's prison which is proven by one niezwykły eksponat in the museum. It is a message from 1942 from prisoners forced to adaptive works of rooms for prison purposes. Text was written by and on opakowaniach po bibułkach do skręcania papierosów. Untill 1949 it was used as prison but later here were appartments for funkcjonariuszy służby więziennej. 1951 it was decided that the building will be demolished and raised building of flats. With all the building material on site and the building permit in place the decision was withdrawn in unexplained circumstances building entry into the register of monuments was made many years later - 2010.[2]
After years of efforts initiated by the Podgórze Association in 2008, the Krakow City Council adopted a resolution regarding the creation of buildings under St. Benedict - Museum of Podgórze. The renovation lasted for two years brought the buildings back to life allowing adaptation of antique interiors for the needs of a modern museum institution.[3]
