Hi, my name is Tony Rees, originally from the UK and resident in Australia for approx. the last 35 years. I was/am a professional biologist and software developer/database designer, and occasional performer on guitar and other instruments. One of my spare time interests is music appreciation (approximately UK & US folk, blues, country and jazz, the latter with an emphasis on the guitar in jazz) and I have a particular affection for gypsy jazz and its practitioners. Another is biology in the general sense, especially "macroscopic" views of biodiversity (see Biodiversity Informatics and Macroscope (science concept)), as well as the contributions of particular scientists in the past. I have been a Wikipedia contributor (off and on) since 2006, writing some articles about technical projects which I have either conceived (C-squares, the Interim Register of Marine and Nonmarine Genera) or contributed to (OBIS, AquaMaps) but more about non technical areas including music, art, film, books, history, geography (UK and Australia) and the history of science/individual scientists. I have also uploaded over 300 of my original photographs to Wikimedia Commons for re-use in Wikipedia articles and elsewhere (refer list and thumbnails below).

I am happy to discuss any of these and related aspects with others interested in this area.

You can see a list of my most recent 500 contributions here, or some stats on these edits here.

Original photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

As a mini-project I have started digitising a few of my photos of performers on stage, etc. and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons for onward use in WP articles etc. as desired - see below for those uploaded so far. You might note a slight bias in favour of guitarists but in truth I admire good musicianship of many sorts, also including fiddle, banjo, other folk instruments as well as the odd electric player as well! (Just that I have not always carried a camera to gigs, in fact some actively prohibit them or there would be more here...)

NOTE: I have arranged these 3 per row, so that (in principle) they are also viewable on a mobile phone placed horizontally, without additional sideways scrolling...
