Phuthuma Nathi
[edit]Phuthuma Nathi is a black economic empowerment (BEE) share scheme launched in 2006[1] to provide equity ownership for black South Africans[2] in MultiChoice South Africa, a video entertainment provider. The scheme holds a 25% stake in MultiChoice South Africa[3] and has over 75,000 shareholders[4] from various demographic groups. It was established as part of South Africa's efforts to address economic disparities[5] through the broad-based black economic empowerment framework.
Since its inception, Phuthuma Nathi has distributed dividends, with total payouts amounting to R17.8 billion as of September 2023[6]. Despite these distributions, the scheme has encountered challenges, such as a significant amount of unclaimed dividends[7], prompting ongoing efforts to trace shareholders and facilitate their payout claims. Phuthuma Nathi is often referenced in discussions about equity ownership and its role in the economic landscape of South Africa.[8]
