Part of the 2024 Pacific hurricane season

Hurricane Kristy is an active, very strong Pacific hurricane. The twelfth named storm, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2024 Pacific hurricane season, Kristy formed from a trough of low pressure which absorbed the remnants of Atlantic basin Tropical Storm Nadine. Through October 22 and October 23, Kristy rapidly intensified to a high-end Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). After slightly weakening due to an eyewall replacement cycle, Kristy became a Category 5 hurricane on October 24.

On October 20, the remnants of Atlantic basin Tropical Storm Nadine crossed into the Eastern Pacific basin.[1] The combination of the remnants and influences from a Gulf of Tehuantepec gap wind event were forecasted to result in the formation of a trough of low pressure.[2] The low pressure area formed and soon developed into Tropical Storm Kristy, 275 miles (440 km) away from Acapulco, Mexico.[3]

Kristy was in a favorable environment for further development, and soon strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane[4] on October 22 at 21:00 UTC.[5] Kristy then began a period of rapid intensification,[6] and attained an initial peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 km/h) just 12 hours later.[7][8] On the evening of October 23, Kristy underwent an eyewall replacement cycle and weakened slightly, with its winds decreasing to 150 mph (240 km/h), by October 24.[9][10] Later that day, however, Kristy reintensified and became a Category 5 hurricane, with winds of 160 mph (260 km/h).[11] On the night of October 24, Kristy weakened back into a Category 4 hurricane, with winds of 155 mph (250 km/h).[12]
