Evaluate an article
Complete your article evaluation below. Here are the key aspects to consider: Lead sectionA good lead section defines the topic and provides a concise overview. A reader who just wants to identify the topic can read the first sentence. A reader who wants a very brief overview of the most important things about it can read the first paragraph. A reader who wants a quick overview can read the whole lead section.
ContentA good Wikipedia article should cover all the important aspects of a topic, without putting too much weight on one part while neglecting another.
Tone and BalanceWikipedia articles should be written from a neutral point of view; if there are substantial differences of interpretation or controversies among published, reliable sources, those views should be described as fairly as possible.
Sources and ReferencesA Wikipedia article should be based on the best sources available for the topic at hand. When possible, this means academic and peer-reviewed publications or scholarly books.
Organization and writing qualityThe writing should be clear and professional, the content should be organized sensibly into sections.
Images and Media
Talk page discussionThe article's talk page — and any discussions among other Wikipedia editors that have been taking place there — can be a useful window into the state of an article, and might help you focus on important aspects that you didn't think of.
Overall impressions
Examples of good feedbackA good article evaluation can take a number of forms. The most essential things are to clearly identify the biggest shortcomings, and provide specific guidance on how the article can be improved. |
Which article are you evaluating?
[edit]Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?
[edit]This is the article my class worked on collaboratively two years ago. It has not changed much since then, but I would like to improve it beyond the B-class status.
Evaluate the article
[edit]The first sentence is too generic, as it could be used for an article about any neighborhood in New Orleans. The lead gives an okay summary, but doesn't not clarify how the article is organized. The lead could be a bit more thorough without becoming overly detailed.
The content is nicely focused on the neighborhood itself, providing information about the geography, history, demographics, and culture of the neighborhood. The demographic information is from the 2010 census, so that will need to be updated after the data from the 2020 census is made publicly available. There do not seem to be major gaps in the content, although there is no discussion of education within the neighborhood, as is common in other neighborhood articles. Since the population of Gert Town is predominantly African-American and working-class, this article does help fill the content gap common in Wikipedia.
The article is predominantly factual, without any issues of one-sidedness. Some of the writing leans toward the writer's bias and needs to be cleaned up to be more neutral.
The article is supported by a thorough set of sources from a diversity of outlets. However, a good number of the citations need to be fixed to work properly and provide the most accurate information about their sources. A few statements are still in need of proper citations. There do not seem to be any dead links on the page.
Some of the writing needs to be fixed at the sentence level, mostly for clarity's sake. The organization makes sense, although as noted above, the structure would be more balanced with some more content coverage, such as the educational options for the residents, the various streets that run through the neighborhood, and the religious options for the neighborhood.
