From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We want to create the world’s first truly multilingual museum guide using Wikipedia and based around a Virtual Museum. It will be created on Wikipedia and use a special sort of link called a QRpedia link that takes you to a Wikipedia article in your own language automatically. We want to create this guide so that it is useable with little or no understanding English. People will be able to use it in the museum to explore objects and ideas in their own language using their smartphones or tablets or online.

How to contribute

[edit]

Take photographs in the museum

[edit]

If you're visiting the museum photograph objects on display in the museum and the rooms and cases they are in and upload them to Wikimedia Commons so they can be used in the museum guide.

Uploading images to Wikipedia is done through a central site called Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org). Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world, it has many projects including Wikipedia.

Set appropriate file names describing the photos and add a description and categories and add to any categories you think would be useful and also of the following categories that have been specially made for this project:

A first steps guide to getting started on Wikimedia commons and uploading images

Tips:

[edit]
  • Make sure you will know what something is when you come to upload it, get the label in the image or a separate image or make notes.
  • Don’t take photos of people in the museum, just the exhibits (we realise this is hard sometimes in a busy museum).
  • Cover one area at a time, it will be hard to see what’s missing and we don’t want to replicate effort.
  • Your photos don’t have to be perfect!
  • If you'd like to upload your photos while you're in the museum

Help construct the guide

[edit]

We want to create this guide so that it useable with little or no understanding English. An example of what has been done so far can be see in the Treasures Gallery, in small rooms each objects can be shown together, galleries with many objects could be split up into display cases or another way you think would be useful. Multiple links could be created from each objects or an article could be written about the specific object if it is individually notable.
