My name is Haziq Rosli, a Malaysian scholar at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). My interests encompass contemporary politics and history. My journey as a Wikipedia editor began on September 18, 2015, from which I have made over 1600 edits. My contributions to editing pertain to subjects in which I am passionate, amongst which include football, history, politics, and Islam.
Personal life
[edit]Born in Selangor to a middle-class Malay family rooted in Malaysian politics, I descend from the bloodline of Megat Terawis, the inaugural holder of the Bendahara of Perak and progenitor of the Megat bloodline. My grandfather, Megat Jaafar, inherited the title of Orang Kaya Besar Maharaja Diraja - one of the Four High Nobles (Orang Besar Empat) underneath the Sultan of Perak; a title equivalent to Dukes in European peerages. His father before him, Megat Yunus, preceded the title, though he was more politically active, being a founder of UMNO Perak alongside Panglima Bukit Gantang, the first Menteri Besar of Perak.
Politics
[edit]Throughout my youth, I had instilled a profound interest in the politics of Malaysia alongside the fields of history and political science. My passion was greatly owed to my father, who himself was a former politician. Speaking of whom, my father was once a grassroots leader within the UMNO Youth, though similar to many within the party, he had left UMNO in the aftermath of Reformasi alongside Anwar Ibrahim, the former Deputy Prime Minister. Thus unsurprisingly, my family's political tradition is deeply rooted in reformism and anti-corruption with a strong adherence to conservative customs. Likewise, my political beliefs can be defined by the traditional right-wing: paternalistic conservatism, Malay nationalism, and Islamism, though perhaps unusual of modern conservatives, my strand of conservatism features a statist, protectionist, and populist view of economic policy. This is reflected in the wider collectivist nature of Malay society, including a deep distrust of individualism and lassez-faire economics alongside strong opposition to corporate trusts and monopolies.
Inspiration is taken from both contemporary and historical Islamic figures, amongst which include Anwar Ibrahim, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ahmed al-Sharaa, Hassan al-Banna, Amin al-Husseini, Omar al-Mukhtar, Muhammad al-Fatih, Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, and Khalid ibn al-Walid. Some Western political figures are worth mentioning, including Theodore Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, Oswald Mosley and Otto von Bismarck. Admiration is also held for Jeremy Corbyn, Bernie Sanders, and Jean-Luc Melenchon despite obvious disagreements. On a personal footnote, I am a close acquaintance of Ahmad Ali Karim, a conservative writer and fellow scholar at IIUM's Political Science Department.
Football
[edit]Since my childhood, I had grown a particular passion for football, being invested in many football clubs throughout the years. Many factors may be cause for interest in a particular club, though it oftentimes pertain to a club's culture and history. Thus, I would grow up supporting popular clubs such as my country's own Selangor FC alongside Manchester United. Likewise, I hold deep distaste for corporate and corrupt clubs, such as Manchester City and local rivals Johor Darul Ta'zim. Listed below are the football clubs which I currently take interest in:
- Selangor FC
- Perak FC
- Manchester United
- Real Madrid
- AC Milan
- Hamburger SV
- OGC Nice
- Benfica
- Feyenoord
- Royal Antwerp
- Fatih Karagümrük
- Al Nassr
Favourite quotes
[edit]Listed below are some of my favorite quotes from famous figures, most of whom are political, religious, and military leaders, and showcase a presentation of the beliefs and values I uphold.
“I have been given the authority over you, and I am not the best of you. If I do well, help me; and if I do wrong, set me right. Sincere regard for truth is loyalty and disregard for truth is treachery. The weak amongst you shall be strong with me until I have secured his rights, if God wills; and the strong amongst you shall be weak with me until I have wrested from him the rights of others, if God wills. Obey me so long as I obey God and His Messenger. But if I disobey God and His Messenger, you owe me no obedience. Arise for your prayer, God have mercy upon you."
“I will be harsh and stern against the aggressor, but I will be a pillar of strength for the weak."
"The weakest man is the one who is able to correct his moral defects, but doesn't take action. "
"The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers."
— Ziya Gökalp, as quoted by Recep Tayyip Erdogan
"People can harp upon issues of race or religion, to me, it's completely irrelevant. It's a way and attempt by political leaders to disguise and hijack the central issues of governance in this country. They are going to appeal to the race, including the Malays, that their position, their power base is challenged."
"Whatever our Lord says, whatever our beloved Prophet says, we shall follow that path."
“Your nafs is your first battlefield. If you are victorious over it, then you will find the other battlefields easier.”
