The Rainbow Fish is a PBS children's television series loosely based on the award-winning children's book by Marcus Pfister. PBS and the PBS Kids turned the original story into a 26-episode animated television series of the same name, which has aired on the HBO Family digital cable television channel in the United States since 2000. The series does not follow the plot of the book; rather it takes the main character and the setting and creates a new story with them. There have been some characters added and others embellished upon for the purposes of the show. In the series, the place where the fish live is called Neptune Bay (named after [Neptune (mythology)], god of sea). The fish all attend school, which is aptly named "The School of Fish".

Characters

Rainbow Fish: The proud, vibrant fish that lives with his mother and father. His favorite movie is Claminator 12. He likes to play Clam Ball, a fictional game.

Principal Gefilte: The proud principal of the School of Fish, he is strict about behavior and sometimes vain. Much to the students' displeasure, he insists that they write book reports.

Sea Filly: A new girl in school, Sea Filly is half-girl, half-seahorse. She loves to read, and eventually becomes friends with Rainbow and Blue.

Blue: Rainbow's best friend, who is more down-to-earth and thoughtful than Rainbow. He shares Rainbow's love for Claminator 12 and for playing Clam Ball. As his name implies, he is a blue fish; he has a baby sister called Turquoise.

Ruby: Rainbow's rude, ruby-red older sister. Like many older sisters, she enjoys teasing Rainbow (especially by calling him "Barnacle Boy", her own personal nickname for him) and often gets Rainbow into trouble.

Mrs Chips: Rainbow's teacher at the School of Fish. She teaches history, mathematics, science and literacy.

Wanda: She is the owner of the Neptune Bay fast food restaurant. She is very wise, and gives advice to the young fish in their times of need.

Chomper and Stingo: Chomper (a shark) and Stingo (a stingray) are the two bullies in the School of Fish. They tease Rainbow and his friends, but they do not physically attack anyone.

Sherman Shrimp: The smallest student in the school, Sherman is a salt-water shrimp. To him everything looks big. However, as Rainbow learns when Sherman rescues him from a tight spot, Sherman's small size is sometimes an advantage.

Sol and Aqua: Rainbow's father and mother. Aqua, Rainbow's mother, is aqua-blue; his father Sol is green. Both parents try to help their daughter and son with their problems, and offer them courage and inspiration.

Sir Sword: Local swordfish, upper-class and a bit of a busybody. He is sometimes grumpy, sometimes civil, but always seems to think he is better than everyone else.
