History

Milestones

Crystalox Ltd was established in 1982 in the town of Wantage in Oxfordshire as a crystal growth specialist company. In 1984 there was a management buy-out by 6 senior managers. 1997 saw the incorporation of PV Silicon AG in Erfurt, Germany, a specialist silicon wafer producer. A strategic partnership was formed between Crystalox Ltd and PV Silicon in 1999, which progressed to the merging of the two companies in 2002 and the incorporation of PV Crystalox AG. In 2004 the company was the leading multicrystalline silicon ingot producer worldwide. In 2006 the decision was taken to build a silicon production plant in Germany.

London Stock Exchange (LSE)

In June 2007 PV Crystalox Solar Ltd made a successful debut on the London Stock Exchange raising additional funds for in-house silicon production and to further expand its international business. In September 2007 the group joined the FTSE 250.

Technology and Products

The full value chain in the photovoltaic industry comprises the production of the high-purity polysilicon raw material, melting and crystallization of the silicon to form ingots, cutting of ingots into blocks and sawing these blocks into thin wafers. Using semiconductor processing technology these wafers are then transformed into solar cells, linked together in strings and laminated between glass and plastic sheets to form durable modules. PV Crystalox Solar's focus is on the first three steps of the value chain: production of solar grade silicon; production of ingots; and wafering.

Future Developments

PV Crystalox Solar is committed to systematically enhancing its leadership in the PV industry as an independent producer of multicrystalline silicon wafers. By focusing on wafers and not competing with customers in cell production the company is able to develop strong relationships with solar cell producers.

In order to complement externally contracted supplies of polysilicon the company has begun construction of its own polysilicon production facility in Bitterfeld, Germany. Commercial production will start in 2009 with projected output of 900MT in the first year of operation and increasing to 1800MT in 2011. This internal production will provide access to cost effective silicon and will be a key driver of our future growth and profitability.

Continuous improvement in silicon utilization remains a key objective of the Group. Customers are looking for even thinner wafers, such that >20% of wafers shipped in 2007 were supplied at industry leading 180micron thickness. New technology for ingot cutting in the form of wire saws has resulted in significant reductions in silicon losses during block production with a reduction in kerf loss by >90% in comparison with the sawing equipment used previously. Further wire saws will be acquired to complement the increased production forecast. Production output was equivalent to 190MW in 2007, which is expected to rise to 355MW by 2011. We believe that over the next ten years high solar cell efficiency concepts based on crystalline silicon technology is the best option to make solar electricity competitive with conventional electricity.

Management Board

The management board of PV Crystalox Solar PLC consists of 5 members:
