Tower Defense

[edit]

Tower Defense is a genre of games that rely on the user to build towers and upgrade them on a set map. Towers are built according to the general "creep" waves.

General Gameplay

[edit]

At the beginning of the game, the user will have a certain amount of lives and money to start with. The user can then start to build towers, or turrets, and start the creep waves. The turretes will do certain amounts and types of damage, often depending on the "element" of the specific turret, which will vary game by game. Turrets will vary game by game. Some games will have a specialty turret, or one that has very good damage, range, and rate of fire.

Creeps usually come at a timed rate and number, which varies between games. Creep health usually increases every wave, though by what increment will vary. When creeps manage to get passed your defences and either into your "base" or out the exit, that is called a "creep leak." The result of a creep leak is that the player loses one life.

Notable Tower Defence Games

[edit]

Many Tower Defence games are found around the internet. Most of these games originated from Warcraft III's Tower Defence, a mini-game found in the RTS Warcraft III, which has the same basic gameplay as the ones on the internet. The very first internet Tower Defence is also named Tower Defence. The gameplay was very simple; five types of towers, ten creeps in each wave, and creep health was multiplied by 1.25 every wave. Flash Element TD was the next TD. It was based more heavily on Warcraft III's TD than Tower Defence, with the same basic tower designs and damage types. In addition, all the creeps came from Warcraft III. This TD has a set amount of waves.

Some other TDs are:

  • Onslaught II Beta
  • Vector TD
  • Candystand-Tower Defence Game
  • Xeno Tactic
  • Defender
