John Walsh (1665 or 1666 – 13 March 1736) was a British music publisher and instrument maker.

Life

Not much is known about Walsh's early life. Scholars surmise from his name that he may have been of Irish ancestry.

Timeline

• Around 1690 - Established in London (Grove)
• 24 June 1692 - "Warrant to swear and admit John Walsh musicall instrument maker in ordinary to his Majesty in place of John Shaw surrendered" (Majesty being William III). Walsh adopted Shaw's trade sign of "The Goulden Harp and Hoboy neere the Maypole in the Strand", but his actual shop was located on Catherine Street. • 28 January 1692 - married Mary Allen at St James Duke's Place, London; had fifteen children - three survived infancy. First child baptized at St Mary-le-Strand on 26 January 1693. His son John Walsh (1709–1766) (John Walsh the younger), born in London on 23 December 1709, inherited his business. (Zon)
