Dragan Maksimovic is a Distinguished Professor and a Charles V. Schelke Endowed Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering, University of Colorado, Boulder.[1][2] He is known for his research in the field of power electronics, more specifically in the digital control and modeling of SMPS.[3][4] Dragan's work on mixed-signal power ICs has been incorporated into mobile devices and data centers.[5]

Education Background

[edit]

Dragan received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, in 1984 and 1986, respectively, and earned a Ph.D. degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1989.[6]

Academic and Research Contributions

[edit]

Dragan has worked on fields within power electronics, such as PWM controllers, DC conversion range, power-factor-correction rectifiers, and predictive digital current control, which has resulted in more than 45,000 citations in Google Scholar (as of July 28, 2024), including publications in IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics.[7]

Dragan's book, entitled "Fundamentals of Power Electronics," received more than 14,500 citations as per Google Scholar.[8][7] He has also authored his second book, entitled "Digital Control of High-Frequency Siwtched-Mode Power Converters," published by Wiley-IEEE Press in 2015.[9] He has more than 45 patents registered with himself in the field of power electronics.[10]

Apart from teaching at his university, Dragan teaches five courses on Coursera entitled "Average-Switch Modeling and Simulation," "Current-Mode Control," "Input Filter Design," "Modeling and Control of Single-Phase Rectifiers and Inverters," and "Techniques of Design-Oriented Analysis.".[2]

Awards and Distinctions

[edit]

Dragan was a recipient of the NSF Career Award in 1997, presented by the National Science Foundation of the United States Federal Government.[11] In 2012, the IEEE Power Electronics Society[12] (PELS) awarded him the IEEE Modeling and Control Technical Achievement Award for his technical contributions to the advancement of power electronics in modeling and control.[4]

In 2015, Dragan was elevated to IEEE Fellow under the category "Research Engineer/Scientist" with the citation for the award mentioned as "For contribution to digital control of high-frequency switched-mode power converters."[3] Seven years later, in 2022, he was awarded the PELS R. David Middlebrook Achievement Award[13] for his contributions to the modeling and analysis of digitally controlled power converters.[14] In the subsequent year (2023), Dragan was awarded the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award[15] for his work in "digital control, modeling and topologies of switched-mode power supplies."[14]
