The Ezhavas (Malayalam: ഈഴവര്) are dalit (Rodi or Rodiya) who came from Sri Lanka,they are largest Hindu community in Kerala and also one of the major progressive communities of the state with Afro-Asian ethinicity.. They came from Sri Lanka to help Chera Dynasty who once ruled parts of southern India. In Malabar they are called Thiyya which means the people with 'theendal'(untouchability).They were formerly known as 'Ezhar'. There were toddy tappers, servants of Villavar, arrack brewers, Kuzhivettukar(people who digging for funeral purposes), fisher men, coir manufactures and arrack traders. Some were also involved in wood cutting,medicinal plant collecting etc. |
