University Institute of Technology is the engineering department of Burdwan University, and currently represents the Faculty of Engineering that was at National Institute of Technology, Durgapur since its inception. The Executive Council of Burdwan University resolved on September 15, 1998 to set up an Engineering Institute at the University Campus under the direct control of the University of Burdwan - named University Institute of Technology (UIT). As per provisions of the Burdwan University Act under Section 2 Sub-sections 16 and 17 the institute enjoys the status of a Professional College run and managed by the University. Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharyya, Honorable Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal inaugurated the UIT building on September 4, 2001. With the approval of Government of West Bengal and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), three graduate engineering courses, viz., Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Information Technology were introduced from the session 2000-2001. From the year 2003 a new branch 'Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering'(flagship programme of the institute) has been started.Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering have been introduced from the academic year 2008-09.

The Institute is located about 100 km northwest of Kolkata and on the southern side of Grand Trunk Road. The nearest airport is at Kolkata about one and a half hours' drive through NH2. Burdwan is well connected through rails and roads with all over the country. The institute intake is 360 students for undergraduate courses annually. UIT is approved by the Government of West Bengal and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). UIT is a National Board of Accreditation (NBA) Accredited Institute and Recommended for TEQIP Phase-II Grant.The college has been listed in top 50 engineering colleges in india.

Centre of Excellence

INSTITUTE-INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP CELL: A few years back the university has opened the Institute Industry Partnership Cell (IIPC) with the financial assistance from AICTE and a University MBA Professor looks after the activity of the Cell. This will further brighten the prospect of interaction with the Industries - leading to easy opportunity for industrial Training and job opportunity through Campus. The college has its own dedicated placement cell with Senior Officials, Faculty members as Advisors. It is looked after by a committee composed of Placement Officer, Faculty Members and representatives of the Final Year students.

INSTITUTE OF ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERS:The Professional Activity Center of The Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers, an apex body of Government of India for Information Technology, Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering was opened in 2002. Consequently it was upgraded to the standard of Sub Center in 2004. The purpose of this center is twofold: (1) To inject professionalism the outlook of the students through seminars, invited lectures and work shops etc. & (2) to make electronics,instrumentation, telecommunication, computer and IT, considered to be the elitist technologies, becoming the technology of masses.

SHAKING HANDS WITH IBM :A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between IBM India Ltd. and The University of Burdwan on 09.08.2006 for tie-up with the global leader IBM in an academic initiative in the august presence of Mr Nirupam Sen, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge of Commerce & Industries, Govt of West Bengal. As a part of this MoU, IBM will make available softwares worth Rs.12.0 Crores to University of Burdwan at no cost. The basic objective is to develop skilled manpower for the IT industry through technology training and curriculum design to match all fast-changing IT market needs. IBM shall train the Trainers on all the technologies provided by them who in turn will pass the skills to their students.

Cultural and Technical fest

UIT conducts its cultural fest "WALTZ".

Campus

UIT is having a lush green campus. The campus is a part of University of Burdwan's campus. There are four Boys' hostels viz. New and old Banabas Boys Hostel(for first year students), Prof S.N. Bose Boys' & J.C. Bose Boys' Hostel and a Girls' hostel named Madam Curie Girls' Hostel.
