Troye Sivan, born Troye Sivan Mellet (born 5 June 1995), is an Australian[1] actor and singer. He played Young James Howlett in the X-Men film X-Men Origins: Wolverine,[2] and most recently starred in the film Spud.[3] He also makes videos that he posts video-sharing website YouTube on which he currently has over 300,000 subscribers and over 14,000,000 views.

Biography

Personal life

Sivan was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.[4] He moved to Australia when he was 2 years old and lives in Perth, Australia with his parents and three siblings. He is Jewish and he was home schooled. Troye's middle name is Sivan and he embraced it as his stage name.

Music

Sivan has sung at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Channel Seven Perth Telethon.[2][5] His 2006 performance included a duet with Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian.[2] Sivan made it to the grand finals of StarSearch 2007.[4] His debut album, Dare to Dream was released in February 2008. The CD includes five songs "There's a Hero", "Angels Brought Me Here", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "Unsung Hero" and "The Prayer".[6] On 20 September 2008, Sivan sang in the opening of Storm the Stage at the Burswood Entertainment Complex.[7] In February 2010, Sivan opened the "We Are The World 25 for Haiti (YouTube Edition)", the collaborative music charity video produced by Lisa Lavie to help raise money for the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Most recently in December 2012 Troye produced his own music video through YouTube called "The 2012 Song" telling the story of the year from his perspective."The 2012 Song".[8]

Acting

In 2007, Sivan starred as Oliver Twist in a production of Oliver! at the Regal Theatre.[2]

In February 2008, Sivan was cast as Young James Howlett in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Sivan got the part after videos of his Telethon performance were posted on YouTube, catching the attention of a Hollywood agent who contacted Sivan and asked him to send in an audition tape.[2] Though Kodi Smit-McPhee was already cast for this role, he was unable to be a part of the film, due to his other film, The Road.[9]

In 2008, Sivan was cast in a West Australian short film, Betrand the Terrible.[10]

In July 2009, he auditioned successfully for the lead role in Spud, a film adaptation of the 2005 novel by South African author John van de Ruit.[3] Filming took place in South Africa from early March to mid-April 2010.[11][12]

Sivan appeared in the West Australian season of Samuel Beckett's absurdist play Waiting for Godot which opened on 28 May 2010. Sivan shared the role of "Boy" with Craig Hyde-Smith, alternating nights.[13]

In June 2012 Sivan returned to South Africa to film SPUD 2: The Madness Continues, which will be released in South Africa on June 21, 2013.

Social Media

In September 2012, Sivan began creating weekly video blogs on the video sharing site YouTube, after strictly singing on the site since 2007. At the time of posting his first vlog, Sivan had accumulated 27,000 subscribers in his 5 years on YouTube. As of May, 2013, Troye has over 13 million views across YouTube videos and 300,000 subscribers. His Youtube account is in the Top 20 most subscribed channels in Australia.

Sivan's other Social Media accounts also have a strong following. As of May 2013, his Twitter account had over 100,000 followers, his Instagram account had over 115,000 followers and his Facebook account has over 40,000 likes. Like many of his YouTube counterparts, Sivan takes the time to interact with his fans on these sites to strengthen the relationship between himself and his fanbase.

Sivan also posts actively to his account with Tumblr.
