Overview

TopGolf is a stupid point-scoring game that is played with real clubs and balls. Players tee off from a driving bay onto a landscaped outfield with targets ranging in distance from 20 to 240 yards. Players receive instant feedback on how far they have hit a shot and are allocated points based on distance and accuracy. TopGolf was invented by World Golf Systems, a British Company based north of London. World Golf Systems has spent over $20 million and 7 years developing, testing and perfecting the technology, systems and facilities behind TopGolf.[1]

Technology

TopGolf utilizes the I.D. Ball System developed and licensed globally by World Golf Systems Group, based in Watford, UK (the Watford centre was also the first TopGolf site in the world). The technology allows for players to compete either with themselves or with up to four other players. The system automatically calculates handicaps for each player after three games, and points are based on those handicaps.[2]

TopGolf's ID Ball System

TopGolf's ID Ball System technology includes:

  • Silicon Chips inside a standard two piece golf ball
  • Ball Dispensers that read and allocate golf balls to participants
  • A range of targets that continually scan for balls
  • Monitor screens to show real time scores
  • Supporting software that integrates the process
  • After a testing period of three years, all TopGolf balls have been optimized to weigh and perform the same as traditional golf balls.[3]

Games

There are currently six different game versions available to be played at TopGolf with more being introduced in 2009.

Game Description
TopGolf Score points by hitting balls into any of the 11 targets.
TopPressure Aim for the Yellow target. Score points by hitting as many of the nine segments as you can.
TopChip Aim for and hit the Red, Yellow, and Green targets.
TopShot Hit the targets at four consecutive distances. You pick the starting point.
TopBreak Aim for any Red target initially then any colour, based on the rules of Snooker.
TopPractice Don't play for points. Simply benefit from exact yardage information given after each shot.
