In March 2008, Tony announced to Carla that he was behind the new housing development on Victoria Street. On 17 March 2008, he proposed to Carla at a dinner party in front of Steve, Michelle, Liam and Maria. Carla, overcoming the initial shock and embarrassment, eventually accepted his proposal. He later suggested that the couple move into one of his new luxury flats when they had been completed. Noise and disruption from the work on the flats garnered complaints from street residents including Blanche Hunt and Ken Barlow, and also from Steve, especially when his daughter Amy was nearly hit by a truck. Tony promised to speak to the site foreman and even Liam admitted he had started to take a liking to Tony. Tony later enlisted the help of Leanne Battersby to help sell the apartments. Tony now owns Liam's 40% of the factory after Carla blackmailed Liam into selling his share to Tony. |

Anthony "Tony" Gordon is a fictional character from the British soap opera Coronation Street played by Gray O'Brien. He made his first onscreen appearance on 16 September 2007.[1]
Storylines
Arrival
Tony was introduced as the owner of a clothing firm who gave a contract to Carla and Liam Connor’s underwear factory, Underworld. Tony began a romantic relationship with Carla, unaware she had romantic feelings for Liam. It was revealed that Tony had a secret ex-wife, Lindsay, when she came into the factory looking for Carla before slapping her to the ground.[2][3] Tony showered Carla with gifts, and trips to expensive restaurants. After a while, Carla began to pursue her love interest in Liam. Unaware of Carla's intentions, Tony carried on seeing her until she ended their relationship in order to prove to Liam she wanted to be with him. Tony continued seeing Carla at the factory to carry out his order, and later stole her keys to her flat, letting himself in to cook dinner. He eventually convinced Carla to get back together with him.

Clash with Roy Cropper
In April 2008, Roy Cropper found bat droppings on the new building site and requested Tony halt work because he didn't want the builders to work with a bat colony present. Instead, Tony ordered a reluctant Jason Grimshaw to smoke out the bat colony and destroy any evidence of bats being on the site. Roy guessed what had happened, and along with Becky, Ken and to a lesser extent, Ashley, began a campaign against the work on the building site. Examples of Roy's non-violent protest included barring builders from the café and parking Hayley's car (a Morris Minor Traveler) in the way of the site entrance to cause obstruction. To settle the protest Tony donated £10,000 to a bat charity, though this did not satisfy Roy on principle.
Expanding his empire: problems with Jed Stone
Tony then began looking for more businesses to expand his empire. He approached Rita and Norris to buy the Kabin in order to expand Underworld, with Rita accepting in theory as a retirement plan. He then approached Kevin Webster at the garage where he was met with a definite refusal. Tony then invested in Jimmy Dockerson, a new weapon in trying to get Kevin to sell the garage and also began to manipulate Rosie, Kevin's daughter who works at Underworld, to steal client lists that Tony needed to claim the garage from Kevin. In August 2008, Tony began plans for a redevelopment project on a cluster of terraced houses that he owned. He intimidated elderly tenant Jed Stone into moving out of his home which he had lived in for 40 years, causing him to suffer a stroke. Tony threatened him as he recovered in hospital.
Murdering Liam Connor
After, a scantily clad Rosie attempted to seduce Tony in September 2008, he quickly rejected her advances. Furious at being rejected, Rosie showed him the video footage on her mobile phone of Liam and Carla in a passionate embrace. He threatened Rosie to keep quiet about it, telling her to continue working at Underworld as usual. Tony then discovered, through Carla's bank documents, that she had invested in Liam and Tom's business venture Lad Rags, another secret which she had kept from him. That night Tony spotted Carla and Liam kissing, which he took as further evidence of a liaison between the pair. On 17 October 2008, the night of his stag party, he hired Jimmy Dockerson to kill Liam in a hit-and-run. Tony comforted a devastated Carla, secretly knowing the true extent of her grief. Unable to cope, Carla called off their wedding and went to stay with a college friend in Los Angeles much to Tony's dismay.
Financial worries and marrying Carla
In November 2008, Tony discovered that his finances were in dire straits as he struggled to sell the Victoria Court apartments due to the credit crunch. In desperate need of equity, he took some money from the Underworld payroll account, forging Carla's signature on the cheque. Upon Carla's return from Los Angeles, she stunned Tony by proposing to him which he gleefully accepted. Tony received another surprise when his brother Pat turned up for the wedding. Tony married Carla on 3 December 2008. During Tony and Carla's wedding reception, Liam's widow Maria Connor found out about Liam and Carla's fling but was unable to confront Carla as she and Tony had just set off on honeymoon.
Maria's fury
Upon Tony and Carla's return from their honeymoon, Tony listened to the several voicemails which Maria had left him, saying that she knew he had murdered Liam. Tony paid Maria a visit on 15 December 2008, intent on silencing her for good. When she asked him to swear on her unborn baby's life that he didn't kill her husband, he was unable to do so, which Maria took as the confession she needed. Panicing, Tony tried to bribe her with one million pounds, over five installments, to provide for her and the baby's future. Tony was just about to strangle Maria with one of Liam's belts when Fiz Brown knocked at the front door.
Maria then went to the police and told them that Tony was responsible for the hit-and-run. D.C. Weller questioned Tony but he denied the crime saying that Maria was merely looking for someone to blame.
Maria is set to run Tony over. However at the last minute she decided to change her mind as swerves. She still hits Tony then runs her car into the factory. Both Tony and Maria are rushed to hospital where there are concerns for Marias unborn baby.
It is discovered that Tony, Maria and the baby are all okay.
Tony is set to have an affair with Maria while his wife Carla is out of town.
Getting rid of Jed
On 24 December 2008, Jed Stone went to the factory to confront Tony once again. Tony accidentally told Jed the name of the man he hired to murder Liam. Jed then said that he would go to the police about both of them and that Tony wouldn't get away with his crime. In anger, Tony strangled Jed to his death. Tony then panicked when he realised that the factory girls would be back for the Christmas party. Tony then shoved Jed's lifeless body into a hamper just as the factory girls arrived. He put a cloth and bottles of champagne on top of the box. The girls were oblivious to the hamper's grisly contents and continued partying. On December 25th (Christmas Day), Tony had planned to dispose of Jed's body, but instead was shocked to find him alive. Knowing that Jed would probably report this and give him even more evidence that Tony could in fact have murdered Liam, he offered him a startling deal to a new flat and £3,000 to get started. Jed accepted, but wasn't allowed to say goodbye to anyone, instead Tony sneaked to Emily Bishop's house to pick up his belongings.
Tony then put Jed in the back of the van, Jed was not seen again, but in a scene later in the episode, it is heavily hinted that Tony has killed him. The scene showed Tony mopping the floor of the van, and Jed's Santa hat on a seat in the van. But Jed is alive and healthy in Wigan and is set to return on the 7000th episode of Coronation Street and Carla seeing Tony harrasing Jed as he goes back in his taxi home. [4]
Reception
Tony has a dislike for football club Rangers. In one episode he says "I could no more fancy Rosie Webster than I could support Glasgow Rangers". Supporters of Rangers took great offence to this remark and flooded the ITV switchboard with calls of protest as they thought the remark was a retaliation for the 2008 UEFA Cup Final Riots involving Rangers fans. Ironically, it was revealed that his brother has a season ticket for the club - who has appeared for his wedding in 2008.
He also once said he was a modern "Robert the Bruce" - fighting for his honour in the street and the business world. This made Scottish tourism for the historical figure go up by 4%, it was said by the Scottish Tourist Board.[5]
