The X Factor NZ is an upcoming New Zealand television reality music competition, originating from the original UK series. In September 2012, TV3 confimed that a New Zealand production of The X Factor will screen in 2013.[1] The show will receive NZ$1.6 million from New Zealand broadcast funding agency NZ On Air, for the production of 30 episodes of 60 minutes duration each.[2] The show will be open to singers aged 14 and over, and the winner will be signed to Sony Music Entertainment New Zealand. The contestants will be split into the show's four traditional categories: Under 25 Boys, Under 25 Girls, Over 25s and Groups.[3]

Dominic Bowden has been confirmed as the host for the series, and recording artist Stan Walker has been confirmed as one of the show's four judges.[4] The initial pre-audition tour will take place in January 2013, with dates in 27 New Zealand towns and cities.[5]

The show's key sponsors are Ford New Zealand as the broadcast sponsor, and McDonald's and Coca-Cola as partners.[6]

Judges and presenter

In October 2012, Dominic Bowden was confirmed as the presenter of The X Factor NZ. Bowden previously hosted NZ Idol and works behind the scenes on the 2012 series of The X Factor (U.S.) in Los Angeles.[7] In November 2012, Stan Walker was announced as the first of the show's four judges. Born in Australia but of Maori decent, Walker was the winner of the seventh and final series of Australian Idol in 2009 and has enjoyed chart success in New Zealand.[8]

Selection process

Pre-auditions

The first appeal for applicants was made on 11 November 2012, with the announcement of the application process and the pre-audition tour details.[9] Pre-auditions in front of the show's producers are due to begin in January 2013 in 27 towns and cities across New Zealand.[10]
