The Naked Brothers Band (band) |
The Naked Brothers Band is a rock-mockumentary series about a teenage rock band. The series was developed by the pilot episode The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie.[1][2] The series began on February 3, 2007 and is now in its third season. The show stars Nat Wolff, Alex Wolff, Thomas Batuello, Allie DiMeco (as Rosalina), David Levi, Qaasim Middleton, Cooper Pillot, Jesse Draper (as Jesse Cook), and Michael Wolff (as Dad). The stars Nat and Alex Wolff are actually real life brothers and the the series is based on the real life band Nat formed with his best friends in pre-school.[3] Nat Wolff writes and performs the majority of the show's songs. All the other songs are written and peroformed by Alex Wolff.[3][1] When Nat and Alex were very young, they came out of the bathtub shouting, "We're the Naked Brothers Band!"[3] The series is created by Nat and Alex's real-life mom Polly Draper.[3] Polly Draper's husband Michael Wolff produces the music with his friend music composer Michael A. Levine. He also stars as his sons' dorky accordion playing father on-screen.[3] The series brought Nickelodeon's highest-rated premiere in seven years.[4][5] The series will end on April 11, 2009 with the eighth Naked Brothers Band movie entitled The Premiere.
Production
Development
In 2005, Ms. Draper entered the television series adapted film The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie at the October 23, 2005, Hamptons International Film Festival where it won the audience award for family feature film.[3][6] Meanwhile Nickelodeon executive and the founder of Spike TV, Albie Hecht was in the audience that day. He ended up bringing the film to Nickelodeon—begging them to do a television series based on it. Tom Asheim, the vice president and general manager of Nickelodeon said, "At first, we were intrigued by the idea, but we weren't sure kids would get the vague-tongue-and-check-of-it. Then a bunch of us took it home to our own children and they loved it."[3] Eventually, Nickelodeon persuaded Ms. Draper to put together a television series. Draper recalled, "...When Nickelodeon first asked us about doing a series, we said, 'How about a cartoon, so the kids could stay normal?' They said, 'No, we love your kids.'"[7] In the summer through the early fall of 2006, the first season of the self-titled series took production.[3] In January 27, 2007, The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie aired on Nickelodeon and the self-titled series aired February 3.[3] Polly Draper is the creator, head writer, executive producer, and frequent director of the series,[3][4][6] while Albie Hecht is the executive producer.

The vast majority of the cast members in the production is family and friends.[3] Both, Albie Hecht's production company Worldwide Biggies and Polly Draper's production studio Kidz House Entertainment distributes the series.[6][8] Kidz House Entertainment is located at Stage 1, which is a division of Broadway Stages in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where the show is filmed.[3][9][10]
Post production
Polly Draper—the brothers' real-life mother is the creator, executive producer, head writer, and frequent director of the TV show; their father, Michael Wolff (who was the band-leader and musical director for The Arsenio Hall Show, from 1989–94), is the co-executive producer, music producer, and music supervisor of the TV show. Wolff stars as the brothers' geeky father who plays the accordion.[3][1] Tom Asheim—the general manager and executive vice president of Nickelodeon said,[11] "This is our version of The Monkees. Nat Wolff wrote all the music, which I think distinguishes the show. Sometimes I think you get a sense from bands that they are [faking it] like Milli Vanilli. This really is by kids and for kids". In a New York Times article Asheim said,[3] "At first we were intrigued by the idea, but we weren't sure that kids would understand the vague tongue-in-cheek of it. Then a bunch of us took it home to our own children, and they loved it".
Albie Hecht knew that the series would be a successful after watching The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie at the Hamptons International Film Festival.[3] In a New York Times article Hecht quotes, "They're just real—real brothers, real friends; it's all the stuff kids do when they're hanging out on the playground. The idea that you're watching a documentary is so much fun. Then you put them into that fantasy of being a world-famous rock band, and that's the sauce that makes it work". Their online videos have been played by fans more than 11 million times in October 2006. Two months later, one of those watchers recognized Nat and Alex in a Florida hotel. She sent them a note, "Are you the Naked Brothers"? They were so excited, Ms. Draper said. "The show hasn't even aired yet and now walking down the streets kids are calling out their names. They can't believe it".[11]
Awards and nominations
Polly Draper was nominated for the third episode of Season 1 titled Nat is a Stand-Up Guy at the 2008 Writer's Guild of America for Children's Episodic and Specials.[12] The following year, Draper won the Children's Script — Long Form or Special at the 2009 Writers Guild of America for the finale TV movie of Season 2 titled Polar Bears, which was the only one nominated in the category.[13]
