The North Czech Philharmonic Teplice (Czech: Severočeská filharmonie Teplice) is a professional symphony orchestra based in Teplice, the Czech Republic.

History

[edit]

The orchestra was founded in 1838. At that time, Teplice’s spas were at their prime hosting concerts with the finest personalities of the world of music. In summer season, the orchestra performed approximately 150 spa and 18 symphony concerts and cycles of symphony music during the winter season. However, at the end of the Second World War, the closing of the town’s German theatre marked the end of the thriving orchestra’s concerting era.[1]

In 1948 the once renowned spa orchestra has been restored. It was transferred to the care of the Regional Authorities in Usti nad Labem, expanding to 60 musicians.[1]

Over the time, the orchestra had established a good reputation, has grown in size and in 1979 has been named North Czech Philharmonic of Teplice. [1]

During its history the orchestra has had several prominent musicians appear as guest artists; including performances led by conductors Eugen d'Albert, Richard Strauss, Siegfried Wagner, Felix Weingartner, and Alexander Zemlinsky. Other musicians who have performed with the orchestra include pianists Ferruccio Busoni, Conrad Ansorge, Emil von Sauer, Ernö Dohnányi, and Frederic Lamond; violinists Pablo de Sarasate, Eugène Ysaÿe, Bronisław Huberman, Fritz Kreisler, Alexander Petschnikoff, Henri Marteau; cellists David Popper, Julius Klengel, Hugo Becker, Anton Hekking, and vocalists Lilli Lehmann and Ernestine Schumann-Heink.[1]
