Could the first two lines be combined into one?
[edit]Currently this template produces two whole lines above the templatedata table, which is kind of a waste of vertical space and a bit distracting. Would anyone have any objections to the two being merged into one line, like this? Many thanks, User:GKFXtalk 00:03, 16 February 2018 (UTC).
- Done, as no objections. User:GKFXtalk 17:08, 18 February 2018 (UTC).
Needs addition of TemplateWizard and other clarifications
[edit]The current text
- "This is the TemplateData documentation for this template used by VisualEditor and other tools; {{Template error report|lc=yes}}
- TemplateData for Example"
is poor for several reasons.
- It needs addition of TemplateWizard, because the default source editor has had TemplateData capability through it since April 2019. The 2017 wikitext editor could also do with being an optional addition (beta feature with 60,000 users).
- TemplateData documentation isn't used by those tools; the TemplateData itself is. The purpose of TemplateData could do with being stated too, as well as the fact that the template has TemplateData at all.
- {{Template error report}} should be placed back on its new line, as it's completely separate from TemplateData.
- The heading level of "TemplateData for Example" is disorienting, because it's not in line with the surrounding heading levels, and the very next heading (that of the TemplateData table) is of the same size and appearance. It should be of a level 2 heading size (though not such that it enters the table of contents).
I've added a new version to the sandbox, which you can view in the testcases page. It adds a few clarifications and enables a few optional parameters for additional information.
Please let me know what you think.

- I am working on basic internal improvements, like adding Category:Pages using TemplateData header with unknown parameters. After that, other improvements can be discussed. -DePiep (talk) 15:40, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Propose technical improvements
[edit]I propose to make technical changes. Actual behaviour shall not change. The changes are:
- Check parameter usage, using Module:Check for unknown parameters.
- Known parameters:
|1, nolink, noheader=
(per current documentation) - Tracking category, new: Category:Pages using TemplateData header with unknown parameters
- When in Preview, an warning message is shown (test here)
- Use {{Sandbox other}}. This also eliminates the /doc pages from Category:Templates using TemplateData (10,412) (was 26-03-2020: ca. 10.300, expected remaining: ~8300)
- rm extaneous space [1] (todo, keep for now = testcase checking green ;-) ).
- See testcases.
Comments? inviting SUM1. -DePiep (talk) 16:10, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Note: using
|1=
(as in: {{TemplateData header|1=Infobox film}}) currently does not affect the {{Template error report}} (monthly report) link. This bug is kept for now, to maintain same behaviour. Cleanup later. -DePiep (talk) 11:14, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

template name should propagate into {{Template error report}}- Situation subpage-with-/doc: categorise in Category:Templates using TemplateData? Opt-in/out? Example {{AFC status/original}}.
- Incidentally, ends up being about the ROOTPAGENAME when default, not subpage. So cat and TPU be consistent, better.
4. Option needed: "No 'error report'". When not in mainspace, the report is empty Example in case: {{TemplateData header}} ;-)
5. Example Template:Methamphetamine pharmacokinetics: has DEFAULTSORT|τ (tau) -> effects in this categorisation too. Better: here, sort by plain t:name. -DePiep (talk) 20:28, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

Changes: this reflects a recent Move of Template:Template error report → Template:Template parameter usage (used in this template). This edit skips ~8k Redirects, & removes unclarity (old name is misleadingly saying "error"). -DePiep (talk) 10:27, 2 April 2020 (UTC) DePiep (talk) 10:27, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
