Add line to template
[edit]I think we should add a line to the bottom, linking to a search- it'd help complete out surname lists theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 17:25, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Can someone please add the "cat=" and/or "cat1=" parameters (from {{Given name}}) to this template? It doesn't exactly have to be in the same way as with {{Given name}}, as we saw back in April 2021.
As Paine Ellsworth (talk · contribs) wrote, "The first info note in the category is a reminder that 'For convenience, all surnames should be included in this category. This includes all surnames that can also be found in the subcategories.'"
But it would help keep some pages out of Category:Surname template has extra parameters, don't you agree? Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 14:38, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

- Thought a lot about this, and I'm not sure I see the benefits for those editors who monitor the surname categories. And that particular category, for when this template has extra parameters, was empty when this request was opened and is still empty; so I don't see any advantage there, either. Perhaps if you could elaborate more on the ways this edit would aid editors who monitor surnames? That would help me clear my mind on all this. P.I. Any reason 'type=both' is not available in this template?
[edit]It is extremely non-obvious why the type=both parameter is available in {{given name}} but not in this template. There are many surnames that are primarily surnames, but which are also used as a given name. It seems a bit odd to have to use the given name template on an article that is primarily about the surname. older ≠ wiser 21:42, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
Type of this template
[edit]We are discussing whether this template should be categorised as a disambiguation page template. Please see Wikipedia talk:Content assessment#Pages rated as Disambig-class which are not disambiguation pages. I see the same topic has been discussed going back at least 13 years on this talk page — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:13, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Why does this template classify pages as set index articles but {{Human name disambiguation}} classifies them as disambiguation pages? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:34, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

Description of suggested change:
The Short description template needs to have noreplace
added. See {{Given name}}
.
Diff: {{short description|Surname list|pagetype=Articles}}
→ {{short description|Surname list|noreplace}}
