Sensitive IP addresses

[edit]

Hi PCHS. The only IP addresses that are sensitive are those on the list at WP:SIP, not all government IPs. I think if you take a closer look at the guideline, you'll catch it. But if I'm wrong, let me know. --Bsherr (talk) 19:16, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If the IP address belongs to anything that might be closely related to the above, or a major corporation, for example Microsoft, Sun, etc. it may be a good idea to notify the committee. Also another reason to keep Template:SharedIPCORP (i.e. if an admin blocks all of HCA because someone somewhere writes obscenities in articles...). The "People's Government of Beijing" was reported to the COMCOM (click here) so I assumed that pretty much any government IP could be considered sensitive, but I could be wrong. PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 19:23, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How about something like this?

PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 19:29, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps simply referring users to the SIP guidelines? Could you put it in the template's sandbox, and we'll go over it? --Bsherr (talk) 19:32, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I created the template's sandbox at Template:SharedIPGOV/Sandbox. First time I've ever made a template sandbox actually. PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 19:47, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How about now? --Bsherr (talk) 21:11, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

August 2013

[edit]

Seeing this recent discussion based on misunderstandings in the press, perhaps the template could be made to look a tad less threatening? https://twitter.com/AuntieImperial/status/364398003655688192 --Kim Bruning (talk) 15:05, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How is it threatening? How can we prevent somebody misreading "editing may be disabled" as "editing is disabled"? --Geniac (talk) 02:59, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Anything tagged with {{Shared IP edu}} might as well say "editing is disabled," but that's an entirely different matter. PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 05:07, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update to make more like Template:Shared IP

[edit]

{{Shared IP}} has been updated to make the template friendlier, perhaps we should do the same with {{Shared IP edu}}, {{Mobile IP}}, and {{Shared IP gov}}? PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 05:06, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect usage of English wording

[edit]

This template has a box that currently reads: "In response to vandalism from this IP address, anonymous editing may be disabled. [...]" and there is a bright red stop-sign with a white x, next to this message. This is improper communication, it is communicating that the person that this "welcome" template was added to caused vandalism, prior to the template being added to their page (it is so in my case, I have not performed vandalism and you can see on my talk page that it appears that I have).

The warning message should be changed to something like: "Note: Vandalism performed by users on this IP address will result in this IP address being blocked from anonymous edits to Wikipedia Articles."

I also believe that the red stop sign should be changed to a warning/information symbol.

If the appropriate person(s) could look into these changes, it would be appreciated. 134.186.234.108 (talk) 21:41, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just realized that the "August 2013" section, above, is relevant to this section and am uncertain what to do (the intention of this is to let the reader to know that it that section appears to be relevant to this one) 134.186.234.108 (talk) 22:11, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that this wording looks anomalous. This template is one of a family based on {{Shared IP}}, and it doesn't appear that the others have a similar wording. I can't see any reason why the "gov" version should be worded in this manner when the others aren't, and I guess that many of the editors applying the template aren't aware of this distinction. The templates including the "gov" variant share the documentation at Template:SharedIP/doc, and this doesn't show or explain this different wording. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:28, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Just to add further support: This issue was brought to the attention of the Teahouse and referred here. It does indeed seem the IP poster has a valid point. At least two Teahouse Hosts have looked at their edits and we see no evidence of any vandalism to mainspace pages. So, because of its wording, it really does appear to unduly bite a new user in a manner that can only appear insulting or offputting to them. I suspect that was not the intention. Hopefully there will be a discussion to make the template less specific to individuals, and more appropriate to organisations. How about: "In response to past vandalism from IP addresses used by this organisation, anonymous editing could be disabled."? Nick Moyes (talk) 22:35, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My main concern is the word response. I believe the edit should eliminate that word (please see Merriam Webster definition for: "response", specifically look in the section, RESPONSE Defined for English Language Learners) 134.186.234.108 (talk) 22:46, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify my point about the word response: Consider the following question: "What kind of sandwich would you like to eat?" The English meaning, assumes that the listener of the question would like a sandwich, before the question was asked. It is my understanding from learning English, that when the word response is used, that the corresponding action has already occurred before the word was spoken/written. Does that help? Looking at the Merriam Webster wording, it appears to agree somewhat, what do you think? 134.186.234.108 (talk) 22:57, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How long do these things usually take? I would edit it, if I was allowed to. Does anyone know someone who can edit this page? Is it editable by anyone? 134.186.234.108 (talk) 19:27, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As nobody could give any explanation as to why the wording here was more severe than on the other templates in this family, I've done a small tweak in this edit. Someone who understands the detail of the various logic switches in the templates in this family may perhaps be able to do something more coherent, and make the template more consistent with the documentation page. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:11, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template Protected Edit Request on 2 March 2019

[edit]

The WHOIS links for the template errors out and the sole maintainer is sporadically active. Could someone switch the URL to https://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/gateway.py?lookup=true&ip=(insert IP here). See this diff to help explain what I mean. Kb03 (talk) 05:47, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done @Kb03: (see also note at Template talk:Mobile IP - sandbox this first, then go ahead and reactivate the request. — xaosflux Talk 01:10, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please change

[[Special:Userlogin|Create an account!]]

to

[[Special:CreateAccount|Create an account!]]

to avoid a misleading link. The text "Create an account" should lead to the page for creating an account.

Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 01:55, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It seems this template points to https://tools.wmflabs.org/splinetools/whois/ip/ and results in a 503 Service Unavailable, the link should probably be changed to https://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/ witch is used on the other shared IP templates. CodeLyokobuzz 02:04, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done Now fixed. However, I am unsure of what URL the host parameter should point to, the whois on Toolforge no longer seems to support domains. The similar template {{Shared IP}} also links to a different, dead URL. S.A. Julio (talk) 03:56, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please change every occurance of the following:

:toollabs:whois/
+
:toollabs:whois/w/

This should fix the issue with the whois link leading to a 404 page. Deauthorized. (talk) 15:05, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
