Consensus about colors v3

[edit]

@Nick.mon:, @아드리앵:, @FredTC:, @RayDeeUx:, @Ijon Tichy:, @Yug:, @Wikilucki:, @CheeseBuffet: and @Rethliopuks:; Shall we settle this topic once and for all? Changes made here will affect all medical cases charts when the conversion of each one is completed. Present your suggestions in the Template's color table. After discussion here, let's do a final vote in a new section. Alexiscoutinho (talk) 00:06, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Old discussions: Consensus about colors and Death and confirmed colors too similar

suggestion #1
Deaths: DarkRed  , Firebrick  , Maroon   or red colors...
Recoveries: Aqua  , PowderBlue  , Lime  , PaleGreen   or green or blue colors...
Confirmed: DarkOrange  , OrangeRed  , Tomato   or orange colors... --아드리앵 (talk) 00:45, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I don't mind what the colors are as long as they're distinguishable from each other by a significant degree so that it's colorblind friendly. My main original issue was with the funky 2-line issue in displaying the number of cases and the percentage increase [which by now has been fixed]. Thanks for inviting me to the discussion though! As far as colorblidness goes, any combination in the deaths, recoveries and 3rd categories is fine, thus I would prefer DarkRed and PowderBlue. I think Firebrick does not portray enough severity. The green variants remind me of sick people, not recovered. Aqua is too flashy. On the other hand, DarkOrange and Tomato look too similar in colorblind modes (this extension is quite convenient). Alexiscoutinho (talk) 04:00, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer s3 --아드리앵 (talk) 09:22, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer s5, and strongly disapprove of any combination with both Tomato and OrangeRed, because they are extremely hard to distinguish on dark screens. We should use clearly separated colours first and intermediate colours last. 202.166.16.132 (talk) 08:47, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For the sake of it I threw out a suggestion of my own with some different color contrasts. Something to keep in mind though is that for all templates, except the China one, the 3rd color and not the 5th will be the primary one (which is maybe something we should change on the China template). Of the previous suggestions I prefer v1 and s3 though PowderBlue is a bit too light against a white background IMO. CheeseBuffet (talk) 20:22, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea of DodgerBlue, but the drawback is that it is quite similar with OrangeRed in Monochromacy mode. I agree that the blue should be a bit stronger, but not too much. Once again, I stress that DarkOrange and Tomato look extremely similar in colorblind modes. I would prefer Gold between the confirmed classes as it is quite different color-wise and luminosity-wise. I'm not against Black, but I just think that a dark red makes the chart look prettier as it becomes more colorful. Alexiscoutinho (talk) 02:39, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, your color choice does seem well thought-out. I edited my proposal to be in line with yours but with SkyBlue   instead of Powderblue   and with Tomato as primary color. I'm not sure about the luminosities but I'd say it makes sense to use a red variant as primary color for infections given that infections are marked red on the maps. CheeseBuffet (talk) 18:11, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I also edited my proposal to SkyBlue. However, Tomato and OrangeRed look a bit similar in colorblind modes. Even so, I think making a red variant the primary case color is a valid idea. Nevertheless, if you want to follow that path, I believe Black would go better in deaths and OrangeRed better as the 5th classification since it would be a mix of the intensity/severity of "RedVariant" and Gold. Furthermore, it's good to interleave strong and weak colors for the Monochromatic mode. Do you agree? Alexiscoutinho (talk) 02:02, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, I've edited the template now since nobody else has come to dispute it. CheeseBuffet (talk) 17:48, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see my comment above? I agree with what Alexiscoutinho said; Tomato and OrangeRed look too similar even for not colour-blind people, and 5th classification should be an intermediate colour. So I, err, dispute the current version. If you think my suggestion s5 is not better, can you please explain? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.166.16.132 (talk) 03:04, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If DarkOrange and OrangeRed are distinguishable in colorblind modes then it seems like a good idea to use s5. Alexiscoutinho can answer that better than me though. CheeseBuffet (talk) 08:55, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tested at https://davidmathlogic.com/colorblind/#%2387CEEB-%23FF4500-%23FFD700-%23FF8C00. 202.166.16.132 (talk) 17:57, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just by looks, I'm fine with DarkOrange instead of OrangeRed, but I liked CheeseBuffet's suggestion of having a red variant, like Tomato or one of those from the maps, as the primary cases color. Do you approve having a "RedVariant" with DarkOrange? I couldn't test anything with the colorblind extension though, don't understand why it doesn't work in this other device. Alexiscoutinho (talk) 08:08, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I personally prefer just a plain Red over OrangeRed (s6), and it would make the colours even more clearly separated in all the colour-blind modes (https://davidmathlogic.com/colorblind/#%2387CEEB-%23FF0000-%23FFD700-%23FF8C00). Tomato is a poor choice for colour-blind friendliness. My original suggestion had OrangeRed only because I did not want to change the consensus for the primary colour. But if everyone is fine with a stronger Red, I'd be happy too. =) 202.166.16.132 (talk) 14:46, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I have two concerns with your suggestions. Firstly, DarkOrange looks similar to SkyBlue in monochromatic mode (they can be together in the Chinese chart, for example). You would have to tweak either one of those. I think something between DarkOrange and OrangeRed would be best. Secondly, pure Red, in s6, is too strong and reminds people of blood and deaths. Could you also show us, with a picture, how the current version is inadequate for dark screens? Alexiscoutinho (talk) 01:15, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
