Space at top
[edit]Something about this infobox is causing a large space above the box. For examples, see: Cass Ole and Bask. Can anyone identify the source of the extra space? — Epastore (talk) 21:20, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- Fixed, belatedly. --Malleus Fatuorum 11:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, much appreciated! (That white space thing was driving me nuts!) Montanabw(talk) 22:47, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Trainer?
[edit]Can I display the trainer in this box, if it is the correct box to use for named Standardbreds etc? It does not display by simply adding this now. Cgoodwin (talk) 05:38, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- It is the right box for any specific named horse. I have no clue how to modify the template to add trainers, but the person who helped with the hands template during that spat we had at the WPEQ talk page seemed to be both knowledgable and unbiased. Maybe see if Ealdgyth has any additional ideas, she does a ton of articles on named QH race horses. Montanabw(talk) 16:59, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- I can add the field if there is consensus for it. Where should it go? Below "Owner" perhaps? Ucucha 22:36, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Beneath the owner is where I tried to install it. Is it possbile to have a colour heading like the Tbs and towns info boxes? There are presently many styles of info boxes used in the horse articles. There does need to be a standard info box and with these modifications the box should suit all non-Tb equines. Any help always appreciated. Cgoodwin (talk) 01:14, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
- I'm OK with the idea, though we may want to ask Ealdgyth what she thinks. I would note that if the "trainer" parameter is not used, then it should not appear at all, if that makes sense. For example, a horse such as Skowronek was famous as a breeding stallion and who trained him to saddle is unknown and irrelevant. However, for, say Seabiscuit it is highly relevant. Also needs to accommodate multiple trainers, for example, Rachel Alexandra, who had two different but major trainers in her Oaks and Preakness wins. Montanabw(talk) 16:37, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
- These are the principles that the existing horse, Tb, town, river and mountain info boxes use, with out any problems.Cgoodwin (talk) 00:50, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
- I've now added an option for the trainer (
|trainer=
). The template is not protected, so anyone can revert if this change is undesired. Ucucha 02:06, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

- It works, see Maori's Idol. Thank you so much.Cgoodwin (talk) 02:48, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
- No problems here. thanks! Montanabw(talk) 19:38, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Please get rid of Horsephotoneededicon.png
[edit]These 'photo needed' images are ugly, and if there isn't an image already people know that by the blank space. I think that the Horsephotoneededicon.png placeholder needs to be removed. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:33, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
- I agree. I tried to do it but did not quite get it right. I will seek expert advice. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 09:08, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Death date
[edit]User:Montanabw wrote on my talk page:
not sure why you changed Infobox named horse to list everything with a different sequence of numbers. I reverted it for now...
I didn't merely change the parameter numbering (which leaves gaps to facilitate future additions); but makes no visible change), but also added a |death_date=
parameter, which can be seen in use on, for example Sergeant Reckless. For that reason, I've restored my edits. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:37, 28 July 2013 (UTC)
- Can we keep the old parameter numbering? We have multiple horse-related templates and would be good to keep them all the same. Also, for named horses, we don't need species microformats for the hore "biographies" (any more than we need "homo sapiens" on the person biography infoboxes...). Thanks... Montanabw(talk) 17:44, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- If you restore the old numbering, how will you account for the death date? And where is the "project consensus" to which your edit summary referred, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:06, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- (I'm really NOT trying to be a pain in the ass here. Just seeking a full understanding) Can't you just renumber from the death date on down or something? It's so weird to start at 10 and have no 1-9... I don't know syntax issues, so I suppose it is a pain to add more numbers and then renumber, but not sure how having no 1-9 solves that problem anyway...? As for the species microformat, the issue was raised when one of our articles was at FAC (see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Oxbow (horse)/archive1, word search for "species," particularly in a struck out comment. Yes, I know who raised the issue and the larger issues going on ... :-P ) And then at Template_talk:Infobox_thoroughbred_racehorse#Recent_changes:_microformats, it was explained to me and Froggerlaura tossed it. So basically, we have a couple issues here; the existence of two infoboxes with slightly different purposes (for example, we have a lot of horse "biographies" for animals who were never race horses such as Khemosabi, Gem Twist or Theodore O'Connor.) Montanabw(talk) 17:18, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Neither am I; and I didn't perceive you to be. Yes, renumbering from that parameter down can be done; that's not what I thought you were asking for. Feel free. As to the species name (not just a microformat); you referred to "project consensus"; it now seems that you meant a discussion by editors at FAC - they had no business deciding such issues without referring back to the talk page of the template concerned; the content should be restored. I'll comment at the other template talk page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:28, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Given that all the most active members of WikiProject horse racing were heavily involved in the FAC, I'd say they were one and the same, actually. Montanabw(talk) 23:01, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- I don't have a problem with the box emitting metadata but can we do it in such a way that it doesn't stupidly say "Horse" and the species name at the bottom? I know I put it in when I made the template lo these many years ago, but that was because I just copied the racing infobox. It just plain looks stupid. And I created this box so that non-Thoroughbred racehorses and all non-racehorses could be treated properly. I can't honestly think of many additions that should be added in here ... can you Mbw? - No, and we probably should move and rename the TP horse infobox to "named race horse infobox" or something, so it makes sense to use it for Standardbreds and racing QH's. I see this one as more for the Olympic horses, breed champions, show horses, movie horses, etc... everything without a race record, hence not needing all the horse race lingo parameters. Andy is a pretty good infobox designer from a technical standpoint and I know squat about the underlying syntax issues, so I'm apt to go along with whatever you two can agree on and maybe break any impasse that could occur in the discussion. Add/ change parameters?
[edit]@RexxS:I still can't figure out how to properly add parameters, but when editing https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Bamboo_Harvester
I discovered that we need two parameters added: one for "birth_name" and one either called "othername" or "alt name" Personallhy, I think these should be added BOTH the named horse infobox and {{Infobox racehorse}}
Many horses have their birth names changed; (e.g. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Paynter_(horse) was originally named MC's Dream.) Also, many famous horses had well-known nicknames, (e.g. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Man_o%27_War was "Big Red" , etc...) plus some horses imported between nations and some Olympic-level horses may go through multiple name changes (e.g. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Totilas has had his competition name changed, and may yet again), especially Thoroughbreds who come off the track and are retrained to a different discipline where name changes are allowed.
Also, and ONLY for infobox named horse (which is more than just race horses) maybe some parameters should be added or changed as noted, so all disciplines can be used
|racerecord= -->rename to competition record or add new parameter |raceearnings= -->rename to competition earnings or add new parameter |racewins= ---> rename: major wins or add new parameter |raceawards= --> rename: awards or add new parameter
Also, when "honors" is added, it's in a pink banner, whereas Infobox racehorse is all tan, so let's make the named horse banner tan also, not pink. @Ealdgyth: would this be a problem?
Examples where it would be used besides TV horses, Olympic horses, show horses, and horses with impact beyond horse racing:

- Please see my suggestions at Template talk:Infobox racehorse#New/changed parameters? - it would be best to keep the two templates in sync as much as possible. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:57, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- although it is not documented, you can used
|record=
,|earnings=
,|wins=
,|awards=
. and per your comments at Template talk:Infobox racehorse, adding|birth_name=
,|former_name=
and|nickname=
seems reasonable (or|other_names=
). as does removing or changing to colour of the banner. Frietjes (talk) 16:16, 26 March 2014 (UTC) - I am certainly not an expert on coding templates. I think I just copied the code from racehorse and adapted it. Changing the colors is fine with me. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:41, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
- Let's make
|record=
,|earnings=
,|wins=
,|awards=
the defaults then? Most of us non-techie-inclined are doing all we can do to just cut and paste. I'm debating "former name" versus "other names" - as some horses have a name change AFTER they've had a career - Totilas was Moorlands Totilas when he won the World Cup, then he was sold and renamed AFTER he was famous (oh, and his nickname was "Toto").
