Potential for cure

[edit]

The hope for a cure is very much "needed" at this point, because most of what you hear and read tells you that there is no cure for DM. Both gastric bypass and burnt-out diabetes hold potential for further study and possible cure of DM. It's a choice between hope and no hope, and these are established procedures that can lead to a cure. The time is now, to make people better informed, don't you agree, editor Jmh649? – Paine Ellsworth ( CLIMAX )  22:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah a "cure" is tentative at best. There is hope without a cure as we have insulin. Not sufficiently notable to be included here. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:11, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As you say, insulin and other techniques to help patients deal with DM are not a cure, so they are only hopeful to the extent that they can help to control diabetes. The hope that we can give readers with this information is that they might soon not have to deal any more with insulin, et al. Don't you find the idea that, for example, gastric bypass appears to "cure" DM in 90% of cases? I find that fascinating, and I see a definite need to pass this information to all who read Wikipedia. This navbar has the ability to reach a wide reading. So the information about potential cures does belong here. You might be sensitive to raising hope where there might be no hope. So maybe a better name for the group, perhaps "Lines of research", which would give notice to the research and would not sound so hopeful would be better? – Paine Ellsworth ( CLIMAX )  22:31, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The group for which by pass has an effect are for those who are obese with type 2. In others bypass surgery has no affect. The group we just mentioned are typically managed on oral medications rather than insulin. There is no real cure for type 1. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 23:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is no known cure. Research is still in its infancy. You say "in others bypass surgery has no effect". What happens to those who are obese, but in whom the bypass helps them to lose weight? Does their diabetes return? Or is there no study of that, yet? – Paine Ellsworth ( CLIMAX )  02:24, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
