Use cases
[edit]I am pleased to see this template emerge, so thank you Caorongjin for getting the ball rolling at last! :-)
In contrast to template:Cite United States census, the initial format of this template does not elegantly facilitate citation of specific census entries for individuals, households or districts, or derived data not necessarily published elsewhere such as the frequency of a particular surname in a given census. The 1881 census of the United Kingdom is available freely online and most of the others that are now in the public domain are digitised and available behind subscription paywalls such as Ancestry.com. It would be helpful to merge template:Cite United States census with this one in such a way to permit both citation of the published summary table data as well as more specific data sources. This would fall comfortably within the permitted scope of use for Primary source material.
Looking at the respective Censuses in the United Kingdom articles and their "What links here" would be a good way to discover how this template might usefully be developed. --KenBailey (talk) 08:02, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for these thoughts. I guess the use cases I had in mind were a bit different from those of {{Cite United States census}}. Will have to think through how best to address these multiple use cases. I, unfortunately, don't have access to these paywalled entries… so that may be a bit difficult. --Caorongjin (talk) 03:16, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
