Requested moves

[edit]

There are two requested moves presented. This deals with two issues, the fact that this template has nothing to do with encyclopedic content referred to as BCD, and that the template has a myriad of other uses, since all it displays is a capital Δ. The two requests are somewhat independent of each other. The failure of the first proposal does not preclude the second proposal passing. The failure of the second proposal does not preclude the first proposal passing. The success of one proposal does not preclude the success of the other proposal. Both proposals can pass, either can pass.

The first proposal deals with a template that only prints out Δ and possible future expansion.

The second proposal deals solely with the naming of templates used as shortcuts to usernames.

Requested move 1

Template:BCDTemplate:DELTA — As all this template does is provide a simple capital DELTA (Δ), the template should be renamed to Template:DELTA. The lowercase delta (δ) is available from {{delta}}. (δ). The remaining redirect will allow it to continue in the function it is currently employed. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak support. Seems reasonable, although without any parameters (unlike {{delta}}) this one is less of a typing-saver than just using the HTML entity Δ, which produces exactly the same Unicode symbol. Still, I suppose the template would be useful for the die-hard wiki-markup fans who want to get CTS sooner, because you have to keep the shift key pressed for much longer when typing this compared to the HTML entity. • Support or add "uc=y" to {{delta}}. By the way, User:δ works as a link, since WP does not care about the case of the first letter. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 23:13, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Any additional comments:

As with {{delta}}, the template can then be expanded to common uses of Δ so that you don't need to use a math markup section. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, we could make DELTA a copy of delta, but with the symbol in uppercase, but still all the same features as the other template. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 23:17, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean make DELTA a copy of delta, I mean make DELTA similar in functionality to delta, but different functionality, since δ and Δ are used differently in scholarly technical literature, for different functions, etc. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 04:03, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template:BCDTemplate:User BCD — This is an non-encyclopedic template about a username on Wikipedia, so should be made apparent that it is not an encyclopedic content or maintenance template through its name, and not occupy a location with potential encyclopedic uses (ie, anything from BCD). This is second RM request is about the redirect left behind by the first RM request, or the template, if it fails the first RM listed. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Any additional comments:

Non-encyclopedic templates should be marked in a way to indicate it. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a redirect because the first proposal passes, the same rationale exists for having the redirect at Template:User BCD and not {{BCD}}. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:44, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Substitution

[edit]

This should be made into a substitution template. These transclusions must surely add unnecessary loading on the servers, and there's the issue with the transclusion limit, so any large scale discussion with many transclusions may go over the limit, breaking templates on that page. Simply indicating BCD's user name should be a substitution-mandatory template. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 23:14, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree in principle, but typing the extra "subst:" string makes this much less of a shortcut. ASCIIn2Bme (talk) 23:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's for people who don't know how to type Δ, don't know what the symbol is, or can't remember what symbol the former BetaCommand is, so it's a shortcut from having to look up HTML coding, racking your brain figuring out which triangular symbol is BetaCommand, etc. 65.94.77.11 (talk) 04:02, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
