Any special reason why the invisible zero is rendered using strikethrough font...?  (That is what the tag means...?...!)  Thanks, David Kernow (talk) 12:10, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The strikethrough should be removed for accessibility reasons; screen readers will spell this out as something like (depending on the model) "Struck-through text begins: Zero. Struck-through text ends." — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 20:53, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

?

[edit]

I just discovered this template. Can someone explain what its purpose is? — AnemoneProjectors (zomg!) 21:56, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To pad numbers so that single digits align with double digits for example. It's mainly used in the football player infobox - for example, see Peter Beardsley: in the infobox, all the numbers of less than three digits have one or two {{0}}s so that the columns appear aligned. Why not display tables using... tables, with right-aligned columns, rather than alignment hacks and <br/>s? – Gurch 21:07, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think br/ deliniation just makes the infobox template easier to use, as the number of rows are variable. ArtVandelay13 00:24, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS I do wonder about the accessibility of this template, though (per above discussion), neither this nor the infobox were my design. ArtVandelay13 00:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should replace as Template:Z and deprecate 0

[edit]

21-Jan-2011: This Template:0 should be replaced with an alphabetic name such as "{{z}}" (meaning "z" for "zero") to avoid confusion about numeral "0". There is the very common mistaken idea that "{{0}}" is numeral "0" as a counting number in some columns, to be incremented as "{{1}}" or "{{2}}" etc. Also, people have imagined each hidden "0" needs a separate instance, so they use "{{0}}{{0}}{{0}}" rather than {{z|000}}. Also, "{{0|0}}" could be viewed as suggesting "{{0|0|0}}" or "{{0|0|0|0}}" or "{{1|1|1}}". Hence, the template name should have been chosen more carefully, not just for leading zeroes, but for misleading editors into thinking "{{0}}" was a counter, leading to {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}, etc. As of January 2011, "{{0}}" had been used in over 34,500 articles, so it has become a pervasive problem. I realize a bot-update would be needed for older articles, and renaming as "{{z}}" would be resisted by some. -Wikid77 10:54, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would support anything short and non-numeric. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:37, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • For now, I have redirected Template:Z to invoke {{0}}. Now, in footballer scores, to get "2 (0)", the new markup would appear as:  "{{z}}2 {{z}}(0)" rather than "{{0}}2 {{0}}(0)".
    That would reduce the former confusion when editing a zeroed score of "{{0}}0 {{0}}(0)" where users had been unsure which "0" to change into "2" to get a "2(0)" result. A complete bot-edit would not be needed, just change the most troublesome articles, because users can put either "{{z}}" or the older "{{0}}" as they prefer. I think the likely problems would occur for active footballers, where the most-recent scores are being set or changed, based on having been null scores "{{0}}0 {{0}}(0)" for a new season or new team. -Wikid77 17:47, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Even better would be to change the syntax in the particular infobox templates to split the "caps" from "goals", then right align both using table markup, rather than using invisible text to provide the alignment. This could be accomplished in a few steps, first by adding the split fields as an option, then having a bot perform conversions, then eventually removing the other syntax after some time has passed. This wouldn't entirely eliminate all uses of this template, but would reduce the usage in some of the more problematic cases. Of course, moving this to a non-numeric character would help as well. I just checked and this change has already been made for {{Infobox football biography 2}}, which is the preferred template for footballers. So, it would be better to just split the field, rather than replace the "0" with "z" for these cases. Other cases still remain of course. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:24, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 17 December 2024: ARIA-hidden

[edit]

Description of suggested change: Add ARIA attribute for improved accessibility (at least theoretically).

Diff:

<span style="visibility:hidden;color:transparent;">
+
<span aria-hidden="true" style="visibility:hidden;color:transparent;">

PS: MDN says that hiding with CSS should already be sufficient to remove the contents from the accessibility tree. — Christoph Päper 10:57, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
