The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) was created in 1979 following the passing of the 'Fire Service Act 1979' on the 1st Of November 1979. It involved abolishing the State Fire Authority, the Rural Fires Board and 22 Urban Fire Brigades.

The Tasmanian Fire Service is under the State Fire Commission and comprises, the Commissioner, the Director of Urban brigades, the Director of Country brigades - as well as two representatives from local government, and a representative of the State Treasurer.

The fire service is the primary agency responsible for fire suppression and control for the state of Tasmania and its surrounding islands.

As of 2008 the service has a fleet of 450 fire trucks and maintains its own vehicle fabrication workshop.[1]
