Number

[edit]

Umm... is it just me, or does he wear the number 13, not 12? I'm watching a dodgers game right now... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.95.41 (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Time to add Relief Pitcher to his repertoire. During the game that started on May 25, he was put in to pitch in the 19th inning. Haha. 24.166.187.168 (talk) 05:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Valdez is the first postion player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to start the game in the field and then win the game on the mound — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamal82 (talkcontribs) 14:32, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Babe Ruth

[edit]

Please add this to the article. W in 19 innings game may 25 2011. before Valdez, the last player to start a game in the field and earn a win was Babe Ruth on Oct. 1, 1921, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Ruth started in left field for the Yankees in that game. --201.199.71.26 (talk) 15:41, 26 May 2011 (UTC) http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110526&content_id=19594508&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb[reply]

This is really doing a disservice to Wilson Valdez. The catcher for the Rockies who won a game in relief in 2000 did not start the game. This makes Valdez's achievement even more remarkable since it hadn't been done by a starting position player since it was done by Babe Ruth nearly 90 years ago. Look it up! — Preceding unsigned comment added by RonMadara (talkcontribs) 18:51, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Valdez is the first player to start a game in the field and then win the same game as a pitcher since Babe Ruth did it 90 years ago.

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. If you have a source, please provide it here and change "answered=yes" to "answered=no". Qwyrxian (talk) 02:44, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can be written: He is also the first player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to start a game as a position player and to win it as a pitcher.

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. The last three sources don't qualify as reliable sources. As for ESPN, Stark says that Elias reported it, but since this is a blog, I would feel much better hearing it straight from the horse's mouth (read: directly from Elias). — KV5Talk21:44, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From the Wiki article on Elias Sports Bureau, it appears they are "a primary source of statistics" for services like ESPN. The best evidence I can find on the net is on ESPN's Valdez page, under "Ruthian Win For Valdez":

http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/6089/wilson-valdez

Perhaps the cumulation of references will provide sufficient evidence that Elias research discovered the Valdez/Ruth connection.
