My Recent Changes

[edit]

I've made a few rather drastic changes to the article and I want to discuss them here. I use some strong language when describing bits of data I remove, but I think I'm well justified in being so critical of this information and in removing it. Below I discuss some of the things I removed and why.

- Speculation about Great Mazinger's paint colors in Mazinkaiser: the truth is there is no in-show explanation of the color changes of Great Mazinger in the Mazinkaiser anime (black and white, to black and white and blue, to black and white again - the first color change is explained by the fact that it's a different machine, of course - but why would the different machine be differently colored? That piece of data is completely unknown, and I think speculating about it in a Wikipedia article is something to be avoided. Was the original TV Great Mazinger the same one shown in ep. 6 of Mazinkaiser? Well, no - Kenzo built the TV Great, Juzo built Shin Great. Was the original TV Great the same one as shown in ep. 1 of Mazinkaiser? Not really, the colors are different. And the distinction didn't exist in 1974, back then there was just one Great. Did Tetsuya inexplicably decide to revert back to using the Great Mazinger that was destroyed by kikaijuu and Ashura Mazinger when it was time to fight the Micene in the Mazinkaiser movie? It's possible, and you could speculate about reasons why he might do that (maybe both machines were repaired, but the inferior one was the only one Tetsuya could get to when the surprise attack occurred - maybe he felt sentimental for the older machine - maybe he just frikkin' repainted it, or maybe the arms and legs were replaced after damage, as happened fairly often in the old TV show - can you see where this is going? Fine theories all of them but there's no basis for any of them. And what's the real reason? Probably visual style, merchandising, whatever. Maybe they got black arms to match Kaiser's. Maybe the initial appearance of shin Great was the exception, not the rule. Don't read too much into it.

- "It was foolish for Koji to use Rust Tornado..." - I could be wrong here but I don't remember any machines getting damaged by that particular attack - not Great, not the monsters around Great. But otherwise it's a fair point - Z lost an arm when Rust Hurricane was sent back at him in one episode, and Mazinkaiser is the ultimate robot and all, so it's strange for Koji to use the attack with such confidence in that scenario - but you know what? It's not relevant to an article about Great. Personally I don't think the other details of the incident are terribly relevant either (in part because, IIRC, none of the kikaijuu were destroyed in that attack, and in part because minor details like that aren't reliable. TV shows are not infallible when it comes to minor details. Therefore, I contend that Great's ability to withstand Rust Tornado is untested unless Great is the target of the attack.) And "Koji could have seen that this Great could take the attack"? How? And even if he could, how do you get that conclusion? Maybe Koji just has really good aim. Maybe this, maybe that - speculation, garbage, all of it.

- "But Dr. Juzo Kabuto's final robots will be used only if Mazinger Z and the first Great Mazinger would not be able to cope up with the more advanced menace." - This was part of an extended, partially redundant, riff of speculation. That does seem to be the pattern that governed Mazinkaiser's activation, but we don't know all the facts about Shin Great - and it's not our job to fabricate them, no matter how good our fabrications are.

- "its armor was almost identical to Mazinkaiser's New Z Alpha" - I let this one stay, but I gotta ask where it comes from. I don't recall Great being analyzed in the anime. Did shin Great ever take a Koushiryouku Beam to the face? I can't think of any other good tests that would establish this kind of relationship.

- "The original Great Mazinger could easily be damaged by the enemies, whereas the final Great Mazinger could easily wipeout an entire robot army without suffering any damage." - Logically, this is flawed. The first part of the sentence talks about defense, the second talks about offense. I think the basic conclusion, that shin Great is more powerful, is true - but the supporting argument doesn't work. For all we know, if shin Great's offense were less potent, it could've been cut up by the monsters, too.

- "Thanks to a ruse, more than power..." - description of how Great won the fight using Great Boomerang. That kind of plot detail is really not relevant in an article about a machine. The relevant information is that, in contrast with the one in the Great Mazinger TV show, the Great in the Mazinkaiser movie wasn't able to effectively fight the Micene. Let people watch the anime and see for themselves how Tetsuya wins. (I did, and as an aside - it wasn't that clever. I was talking to the screen for a good thirty seconds "come on, guys, it's a boomerang. It comes back. Guys... boomerang... hello..." and then - shock! - the boomerang hit 'em in the back.) The whole point of the scene anyway is just to explain why Great isn't going to win it like he did in '74, why Kouji has to do it.

- "This OVA reveals many secrets of Great Mazinger and Mazinkaiser." - well, of course it reveals secrets about Mazinkaiser - it's all about Kaiser. But as it applies to Great the sentence really adds very little value. It's not as though these "secrets" have any meaning outside of the Mazinkaiser story.

- "he was the only member of the Mazinger army to defeat his attackers" - What about Lori and Roll? Sure, they died, but they defeated their attackers with the suicide attack at the end, right? And I'm assuming Kouji, Sayaka, and Boss don't count? Even though they probably should - Kouji would be the leader of the Mazinger army, I guess - unless you consider the "Mazinger army" to be "good guy robots other than Kaiser" - and it's not stated in the movie whether Sayaka even has a new robot. Anyway, details of the fate of Jun, Lori and Roll, and those two other guys aren't relevant to an entry about Great. That'd go in a Kaiser movie summary or in an entry about the character in question.

Image:Gm11.jpeg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
