Wang's demise was not the introduction of PC based WP
The reason Wang did not survive was their labor force was made up of secretaries and not Data Processing people. When Wang Laboratories needed to sell their WP machines the best people to hire were secretaries because they understand the benefits of word processing. As time moved on these people became managers and district managers. Then the industry evolved into a data processing industry and the management staff could not relate to data processing. There was a sense of confusion on how to sell all the innovative products that were being created. You can't ask secretaries to do that. I remember seeing a video of Dr An Wang pitching to us on selling his new product Free Style - pen based computing, imagining signing your name into a computer, he was begging us to get the word out yet the managing staff did not know how to create marketing or any sales campaigns[1] .
In the end the secretary management staff was not going to hire data processing people because that was a threat to their employment security. To give you an indication of the extent of the secretary mentality WANG needed to train technical consultants on using a third party product called SAM (System Activity Monitor) the program is designed to optimize the VS hardware and software configuration. When they asked for 12 volunteers (needed for the country) for this training only two volunteered and I was one them, thy rest of the consultants had to be selected, by their boss. WANG needed to move into the data processing age and their management staff of secretaries did not have the ability to do it.
